I concur. They're the only chainsaws from a general building tool maker that are actually a chainsaw (as opposed to a tool that looks like a chainsaw and broadly works like a chainsaw but is nevertheless not a proper chainsaw).

And consider Makita equivalents if you already have batteries but you’d probably want to consider moving anything over to 1/4” picco. How fine do the cuts need to be? Curious about the whole process to be honest. Would be delighted if you did a thread on it and other fruit production matters.

A 120 would be a joy because of the lightness but will frustrate on power at 6” (3” would be fine, 4” tolerable). A 200 would be a joy because of the power but only if you’re strong enough to position it for what presumably need to be quite precise cuts. Depends how strong you are and how ergonomic it is to make the cuts. Sixty cuts a hundred times sounds like a lot of cuts to me. That’s assuming you want battery, which for stop start work I would strongly recommend. If you can walk two paces from cut to cut (so don’t need to be constantly stop starting or having the saw wastefully idling) and want petrol power, 150 backhandle.

Does anyone know what effect ethanol content has on petrol’s susceptibility to detonation? Will high ish compression engines run on regular start knocking soon?

I’m currently sat looking at one in my garden, full of half seasoned conifer and apple. I retrieved it from the woods out the back, from a hugely inconvenient hollow surrounded by hugely inconvenient vegetation. I can only assume kids dragged it in there for fun (plus the half a mile from the supermarket). Were I recruiting logisticians, I’d begin with the local urchins. Very impressive.

Thorough and helpful answer. Much obliged. My first thought was plait it, which I now see the problem with. My second thought was make two hedges with a six foot gap between them but I'm getting the idea that that's nearly as pointless because one side of each hedge wouldn't get animal trimmed.

The laboriousness aside, why wouldn’t/couldn’t a wide hedge be plaited at its current width? Light not getting to the middle?

That’s absolutely terrible advice. The tree officer’s cousin will do the work, do a shit job, charge fifteen times the going rate and then both of them will go round to the house of his sainted aunt and spit in her face. -

Probably one of your ghastly neighbours thinking that they can save their ash from dieback if they kill yours (or some similar joined up thinking). These allotment woodlands attract the absolute worst people.

I can’t be the only tree bloke happy working above ground where I can see targets but worried about hitting buried utilities underground. I’d always get a handsomely insured bona fide subcontractor for stump grinding.

Could the radiator have been leaking slowly but the drips have been caught by the under engine tray? I’ve got a driveshaft leak (I think) on my van but the oil sits and congeals on the tray rather than showing itself on the driveway.

Are hardwood beams usually cut full dimension (as opposed to nominal dimensions commonly used on softwood where a 2x4 is actually 1.75”x3.5”)? So would an oak 2x4 actually measure 2”x4”?

Picture only to shamefully grab your attention I’m afraid. I’m after an Alsatian/German Shepherd or close cross. Speaking with rescues already but open to private arrangements.
