  1. You can upload from you computer to this site with the 'manage attachments' button.
  2. It's practical architecture, dahling. I think you're allowed to be interested in that.
  3. 10% of that pile deals with just whether someone is an employee, a contractor or something else. It's always contentious. I'm afraid a lot of very certain answers on this thread aren't right. The best posts on this thread were: If you don't know whether you need employers' liability insurance, you probably do. We're just dumb tree cutters who couldn't possibly know the answer. I don't know the answer. Lawyers don't know the answer. Judges struggle with it. Pay for EL or pay for a lawyer's opinion on whether you need EL (probably about the same cost; unless the lawyer advises you to get EL, then it's both outlays). The insurance WILL cover you. The lawyer's opinion MIGHT cover you.
  4. Some bastard walked off with my favourite BIC biro.
  5. A good war would be an eye opener. ****, but an eye opener.
  6. I do, I do... The lift etc sounded quite nifty though. You can imagine that's where he takes in the barrels of beer for all the wild parties if that helps sex it up for you.
  7. As sad as it may seem, show us your boiler room please!
  8. Can the old round cabs like this one realistically run a chipper on the front? Enough power? Enough weight? Enough metal in the right places to attach it?
  9. If problem persists, sell it (honestly described) on ebay with a part worn bar and a part worn chain for £100 and get a new saw with a new bar and new chain for £170.
  10. Is the Shakespeare the one with the room behind the bar as well?
  11. Practical: It'll cost them more to chase you than what they'd get back (even if they could get it back). Legal: Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999. "Reasonable" is all over them.
  12. Very poor advert but it's often said that the best engineers are the worst business people. tree man69, I'm good at writing. Send me a private message with info including: How you got into the industry What sort of work you've done (domestic, commercial, big forestry, small woodland, road/railnutility, line clearance, whatever) What tickets you have How happy you are with climbing - Can you use spikes? Can you do heavy rigging? What tools/machines you can use What tools/machines you own and come with you. Do you bring spikes? Do you bring a tophandle? Do you have an 88 with 4' bar? Can you do maintenance on tools/machines? The area you are happy to work in. Do you arrive in a car, tipper truck, 4x4 or on the bus? What sort of guy you are - Good crack on a team? Serious, head down and work hard type? Are you a freelancer or a proper subcontractor? Do you have public liability insurance? AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN SAY ABOUT WORK YOU HAVE DONE. The list above is not the only things you can say. I'll write you an advert and you can post it in a new thread. No charge for this service. Happy to help.
  13. OK. I'll go with pickets. Thanks, folks.
  14. London wasn't all bad then. In fact, since my tour, I've always said if I had to live in town it would be Kew. You sold it well! Evidence is somewhere in the cavernous archives of this thread...
  15. It doesn't always go that well. This is the aftermath of me and Tom binning it on the lower Tryweryn in North Wales. He's 200m downstream and I'm wondering what to do with 3 tonnes of water.
  16. Not me but well spotted. That's one of my mate Adam's photos he put on facebook for this "10 photos that make me smile" thing that's going around at the mo. He nominated me to put up my 10. I've not done it yet but was actually just looking at some old ones on there and considering it. My fb feed has been mainly ranting and complaining recently so some positive vibes won't do any harm. This is one of my favourite pics of me in a boat. Nighttime on Loch Oich, the wind going our way for the first time in a week and a bit.
  17. You're a tougher man than me, Mr B. I was looking out of a classroom window today at some guys digging in the churchyard and was bloody glad to be inside. Cold, wet, windy, Southern wuss.
  18. You swine, Paul! It was properly grim at this latitude today. Pissing it down? Send the boy!
  19. I agree they don't look as good as Spyrabase (which I was recommended by a good source).
  20. Ha! I had typed just "pulling over trees" but put "backleaning" in at the last moment to excite people. On a serious note, don't worry. I am cautious and systematic. I do appreciate the advice about the anchors. I thought screws would leave less mess than spades. Spades look like they drag and then need digging out. So for limited and well-judged applications, screws will be fine? Fair?
  21. I've got a Makita cordless drill with hammer setting but it's probably a bit light. I'm happy to turn them in with a tommy bar for how often I'll use them. Need them for pulling over backleaning trees. Suffolk clay and sandy/chalky clay (good base for anchors I'd have thought?).
  22. Can you screw them in rather than hammer them?
  23. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/An7ZB5dM-gg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  24. Spirafix Ground Anchors Home Page Anyone used these? I can't imagine the tops last long when they've been installed (with a hammer) a few times.
