  1. Of course this is just a few numbers thrown out there. I'm guessing at your setup, what kit you already have etc. £200 for you £200 for Paul £200 for chipper and fuel £50 for truck and fuel £50 for saws and fuel £100 towards overheads (insurance, advertising) £150 for any kit you need to buy/profit £950. Under a grand so looks palatable so higher chance you'll get the job (which you have set aside primarily for learning). You learn. Blokes get paid well. Everything else covered or accidentally profited on. Kit profit or cash profit. Win all round. Add another groundsman if you want more time with Paul.
  2. Not being sh1t at your job surely applies to all work? Are there specific rules anywhere or specific norms in the insurance company relating to proximity to wires?
  3. Why wouldn't insurance cover it?
  4. I've been designing fantasy site clearance machines in my head recently. 1000hp tracked chippers/grinders with 40 yard ROROs on the back. That sort of thing.

Thanks, both. Excellent attempts but it being good for bugs, beasties, woodpeckers, squirrels, fungi and iggly wigglies is not in dispute. My question is, 'What's the point in doing something that's good for the bugs, beasties, woodpeckers, squirrels, fungi and iggly wigglies?' Is there not loads of space for them in all the stuff that gets left for reasons other than "An ecologist told me I would be doing the world's bugs, beasties, woodpeckers, squirrels, fungi and iggly wigglies a disservice if I didn't leave it there."? P.S. People think I'm getting on David's case. I'm not doing it in a nasty way. He is considered an authority on the subject. I'm testing him. If he's as good as his reputation, he shouldn't have any problem answering.

David. Please come back and enlighten us. I'll even take back what I said about people in comfortable public sector mushroom gazing jobs being happy to leave the issue purposefully clouded to keep themselves quietly employed.

I do still genuinely want to know the answer to my question by the way.

If the tree killing community seriously needed to re-evaluate its approach to habitat wood, someone as knowledgeable as David would no doubt say it simply enough for us saw-happy simpletons to understand. Reasons for explaining things in complicated ways include: You don't understand it well enough yourself You don't want people to understand it
  9. Booming market for second hand chainsaws on ebay. Brand new MS170; a paltry £170.

Not so boring that you didn't mention it first though. Very good of you to share your experiences with us but it would be even gooder of you to answer a question when someone puts you on the spot. Working in the public sector will have imbued you with a sense of freedom from accountability but I'm happy for you to waive that if you are. He who alleges must prove. He piped up first. I'm happy to blow minds any day of the week.

That notwithstanding, you still have the opportunity to answer a beautifully simple question here: If the brutes, vandals and scoundrels firewooding/milling/chipping everything were informed of the error of their ways, maybe more wood would get left for habitat, which I believe is what you're after.

Come now. You wrote it! You could have easily copied it here or to me in a PM. If you can be bothered to ask Mr Pine why he felled it, surely you can be bothered to fight the good fight and explain why it's worth more to the world as habitat than it is to the firewood economy. Indulge us.

Got a link to the article online please? I don't get that mag.

In no more than 100 words, what's the point of leaving wood to rot?
  15. Since we're on a slight mog derail, how often do you find yourself using the rear-steer on yours, skyhuck?
  16. Law or trees? This time of year, in the rain, just above freezing and getting dark at 15:00 - desk please!
  17. Paul's capabilities as a photographer never cease to amaze. Here, he has made me look both 15-years-old and anorexic. Pleasure as always, Mr Fox. Many thanks again for the harness. Modelled above and now sporting a custom-built high-speed, low-drag bridge.
  18. Are any of these big shredders in the UK on tracks?
  19. I disagree. I think he's dumb but tough. Everything looked like hard work. You'd have thought they'd have become more efficient after 25 years. On a less savoury note, something registered regarding his attitude towards his wife. Not sure I like him very much.
  20. Shredders that'll pull in whole trees or are they the dumping brash on a conveyor type?
  21. What's the biggest Bandit in the UK?
  22. I was very tempted by the U900 that went on ebay a couple of days ago. Went for £4k ish. Needed plenty of body welding but had PTOs and hydraulics front and back and a plate on the front. That and a modest 6 incher seemed a cool micromog to me.
