There was a firm at the 2016 or 2018 APF who made automatic fall protection style lowering devices like you get at indoor rock climbing walls. They were pitching them for tree rigging. Don't recall technical details. I might have not asked. They might have not told me. Parafans are paddles spinning in open air. These things were encased. Perhaps oil and Tesla pump plates. Air resistance (and presumably that of other fluids) acts on the square of velocity. Presumably these devices deal with variable loads on that principle.

@MattyF mentioned it on here a while ago. I'm sure they were something like EUR3000 at the time. Now appear to be around EUR1200. Good price point. Looks easier to live with than a Hobbs. Looks like my competition. Sort of. EDIT I had said that the cleat-off-for-cranking was a neat trick. Now half changed my mind. Yes, it means safe, non-juggly one man operation but it'll fill the drum up and then you'll have to un-cleat, take some wraps off, re-cleat and go again. It'll pull about a foot of rope per turn and I reckon you'd have to reset it every three or four turns. Then you'll try to take as many turns off as possible so you can fit more back on and accidentally let some rope slip back. Then you'll be annoyed.

Easier not having to wrestle a long bar about out of the cut. And in the cut, easier to plunge/carve in any direction. Plus a cubier load you can get closer to your body. Big biscuits, the weight can be far away from you, more friction on a bigger face, they can seesaw on the edge of the stick etc. Just more awkward. And it's easier to sharpen short bars so they cut straight enough at their full length. You'll find a lot of big bars in the wild that can't.

If you need to nibble so you can throw pieces somewhere safe rather than just shove them off, you're better off nibbling cubier blocks than big diameter, thin cookies. Short bar rather than long. Digs in, plunges etc better. I even carry a few of these with lag bolts/screws for if you need to tether a chunk that's in danger of falling off while you cut it, like a big beech knuckle.

First shoot of the season. No lead this year. Easier on the tangles and no doubt his neck. Harder on everyone’s hearing. He was generally good on the whistle but I did have to use my big voice a couple of times. He responds quite linearly to volume and intensity. Which is fine for me because I’m a metal and hardcore punk vocalist but probably less enjoyable for Maureen, 68, next to me on the beating line, trying to enjoy the countryside. He was pretty good. Stayed close. Got a bit big for his boots later on and went further. Had a word. Fine again. Bumped a hare on the last drive. Massive thing, all of about eight feet away. Nearly managed to dive for him but I’m slow witted. Willow coppice btw. Headland mulched for harvester next week apparently.

God no. Spandex-clad strumpets draped over diggers like Kingwell had at the APF a few years ago. Crass as fck.
