  1. Why is it that on every video and photo of Americans feeding big chippers, they stand half in the danger zone, hanging their head in the hopper?!
  2. Thanks for the answer Ben. However I think it is entirely relevant because it's about being lowerable, or not. No DdRT or SRT system is lowerable if the climber becomes incapacitated and can't undo their lanyard. Personally, I hardly use my lanyard at all when making cuts. I'm not reckless, I just don't regard it as necessary if my work position is good and I never cut near myself or my rope anyway. Edit: Sorry, I just realised this isn't the base anchor thread.
  3. I don't see the point in a winch on a 9" chipper. An obvious size up from a 6" is a 12" or bigger. Depending upon who your closest dealer is, look at Bandit, Terex and Vermeer. I'd choose a Bandit.
  4. That's ace Ian. In the event of a Groundie lowering you in an emergency, they only need a pair of secatuers to cut the sapling!
  5. Half the orders I have made with FR Jones have been followed with a phone call telling me it's out of stock, the day after I expected it to arrive! Rubbish service. The other half I've ordered from FR Jones arrives almost before I've stepped away from my computer! Awesome service.
  6. Buy a 3D printer so you can make scale models and possibly a prototype. Then you can use the 3D printer for your children's homework assignments and make expensive looking gifts for the wife. (Actually they will have cost you a fortune!) 😄😄
  7. Yes it hit the magnesium case and cut through into the oil tank. I've got an Oregon bar. The original was made from thick air!
  8. I used something similar to JB Weld but I'm going to assume that it's not responsible, because that would force me to kill myself. Actually, I doubt that any got inside because I couldn't get the damn stuff to stick to the metal body but after some mild shouting I got the job done.
  9. No I didn't. Yet….
  10. So maybe we should all be lower able, single and doubled rope alike. Do you actually lanyard in for every cut that you make? That's a question to everyone.
  11. That's what I thought, until I went into my local dealer with a saw I'd bought somewhere else.
  12. Now that I've repaired the hole where the saw cut itself, the damn oiler doesn't appear to be working! Does anyone have experience with this? How to get it out to check? What to look out for. Thanks.
  13. If you buy online, the manufacturer won't allow your local dealer won't honour the warranty.
  14. That's it Adam. I do the same but with a 10mm oval Mallion. Having said that, I'm now generally on a lowerable base anchor, for safety reasons.
  15. Your main question appears to be regarding the ease of switching to and from DdRT and SRT. The best device would be the Hitch Hiker, Rope Runner or Bulldog Bone because they work as well on both rope techniques. If you like a traditional hitch choose the Hitch Hiker. It you prefer mechanical, choose from the other two.
  16. Thank you. I have a Transit tipper so I'd be interested to know if these tyres would help with grip on a gentle slope, 3hrs after a small rain shower!
  17. What are they and where from?
  18. Either tie an Alpine Butterfly then link it to your side of the rope with an oval Mallion or some guys link it with a Pinto pulley for less friction if you've descended a different route. Sorry I don't have a photo.
  19. I was planning to get mine re-soled but the grey mid-sole disintegrated long before the outer sole wore down. Rubbish!
  20. Ditto.
  21. Some people do use them but I don't because I don't have one and they're so expensive.
  22. You're right Ben. I wiggled it around today and saw how it can invert and become a girth hitch. Thanks For pointing this out.
  23. That's the bank managers problem. Innit!
  24. I'm sure you're making a good point Ben but I can't imagine how the girth hitch could happen. I'll try and make it happen tomorrow if I remember.
  25. What he said. I didn't do that years ago and then regretted it for years.
