  1. I saw a pallet of lawn turf going past me on the bypass(I was sat at a road end) It has come at least 40 miles in blazing Sun/EXCEPTIONAL drying conditions, and God knows could be heading towards Belfast, another 40 miles. Was it wrapped in plastic:confused1:. NO it was NOT:thumbdown::thumbdown: Stupid stupid uncaring s0-called "landscapers" Cheers M
  2. Yep, I been watching the swallows/house Martins skimming the pond this summer, and out at lunchtime today, observed a magnificent red/crimson dragonfly, plus numerous insects in the water. Plus the Cock Pheasant and Hen (with chicks) picking about the brim. Benign neglect can achieve a lot.I am very happy with the Pond, seeing as before it was a perinnal patch of Rushs that only annoyed me. NFG, but surely the ammonia gets used by the plant-life, a natural balance/closed loop and all that.
  3. As I had surmised, thanks all all should-be-good:lol: cheers m
  4. I will consider fitting an aerator, if the Oxygen generating plant-life do not work. but wish to keep it simple with as little maint as possible, if possible. But NO nitrates or ammonia, cos 100% rainwater. cheers m
  5. looks an excellent, well thought out bit of kit . m
  6. Right! Post above is informative and helpful and has "read my mind" in respect of my intentions(which I had not spelled out) (i)I intuitively felt that the pond should support fish life. (ii)I only sent the daughter to buy goldfish or sheebunkin type fish(but hey the Koi were prettier!) (iiI)I am not looking for mega growth or to produce prize specimens. (iv)I had not really thought about feeding, but the slick sales person flogged the daughter the bag. Thread title perhaps a bit loosly worded. thanks Marcus
  7. Ah yes, the Conversation volunteers. PS When will this "fad" for Austrian sythes fade away? I noted that even the NT has become infected by this invasive pernicious disease. m
  8. Well at least 1 and perhaps 2 still surviving, absolutly zooming around, about 2 feet down, saw them tonight, NOT at ALL interested in those crappy bought food pellets btw! Fingers crossed. PS Guessing the clay used to line the pond should be alkaline, is this correct? Anyway the daughter has been tasked to source at PH meter. Be curious to see the result. cheers m
  9. Only about 4"/100mm long max. Yes we are under a Heron flightpath! The clay the pond was constructed with is the (from my experience) the "bog standard" Co Londonderry/Co Antrim "blue" clay, being, I presume from glacial activity "x" years ago. And, from standing in the bottom when dug, should be about a person deep, at least, so say 1.5 to 1.75m.(spited I did not actually measure at the time) Guessing it should be reasonably mineral rich. Pond fed with rain water since construction. And, as said, a surprising amount of natural vegitation already present. I can only presume the wee buggers are still happy on the bottom. PS Not seen the Heron about, and up at 06:00 each morning. marcus EDIT Nowhere for the Heron to stand as the sides are about a 45 deg slope right round.
  10. Cos we introduced 10 to the pond about a week ago, and haint seen them since. Said pond is about 6 months old and constructed from the underlying clay, about 1.75m deep and 12m across at the surface, with a surprising amount of natural vegitation established already. So are the expensive wee fishuckers, too busy exploring and feeding of the probably algae rich bottom/dying/dead vegitation to come for food. Or wot! PS Pond entirely fed from rainwater from roofs. marcus
  11. A near neighbour has 3 PH, which he has not used in prob 25 years, the electric supplier came at him to relinquish his supply. Bodie says " how much would a new 3PH connection cost?" Why? says the Engineer. Because, says Bodie, if you give me a cheque for that amount of money now, I will allow you to disconnect my supply. Needless to say he still has his live but unused 3PH supply!
  12. Yup, spent 7 hrs of extreme boredom on Thursday past finishing my 5 days worth. I am now attempting to corrolate a link between CPC Training and suicides. There MUST be one! Marcus
  13. 125m2 of concrete down today to house my Baker Bluestreak 3036E. (I have so far chickened out of filling in the forms for the 3PH Mains connection.) Though sensibly need to explore it before I invest in an Genset. Though not quite sure where to set the limit. i.e If a gen set costs "x" £stg, is 2*x, or 3*x justified/justifible for a 3ph connection. that is say guessing £6,000.00 for a Genset, could £12,000.00 or £18,000.00 be justified for a Mains connection. Suppose I need to get a kWHr price first, against what a Genset ud cost to run. Edit There is` another reason for perhaps wishing the 3PH Mains connection. To run the heatpump for ground source heating on the RHI Scheme. Then I sell ALL my firewood, for Guiness tokens.
  14. Bingo(from a failed Civil Engineer btw), got some big natural land stones ready and waiting, will place when a digger is about shortly for other works.
  15. Surely better to make biodiesel?, for a diesel engine. Or for a stationary application simply rig a insulated fuel tank with a heater and run on Straight vegetable oil.
  16. £50.00 quid of Coi Carp installed this evening = 10 No. They snuck off down along the bottom. I reckon the volume at about 90m3 and should be 100m3 when properly full. Hopefully due to my 45 deg sloping sides it will not be particularly Heron friendly. Since nowhere to stand? We are unfortunately absolutly directly under the feeding Herons flight path, as observed over this past 18 years. cheers M
  17. Needs some Ferguson/St. Louis coppers on your beat.
  18. Merely require to ballast the end with a concrete block, I have it guyed with Galvanised catenry wire btw.
  19. Ah but! First; How much labour is involved, or extra covered space required to get the net bags of leaves and twigs dry, I imagined"composting" taking place if they are stacked in bulk. Second; What price is each net bag?, not insignificent I presume (though if it allows the use of an otherwise wasted recource, no odds) I really really do like the "concept" and my limited acreage of Birch would be just perfect for this bit of kit. But too soon exhausted feeding a 40Kw boiler. PS Must get signed up for our MUCH delayed/and as not yet launched RHI scheme(with sig poorer payments than the English RHI scheme) fume fume!
  20. Seee, (i) Will this plunging gutter water be sufficient to aerate the pond for Carp? (ii) going to fabricate 9.0m lattice trusses to skip a girder/upright, so as to give a clear opening to allow access for tree length timbers to the BakerMill. N.B. Note the Wheeliebin staff holder! Quite perfect, an it disnay answer back oo let the staff lean or wander. The last photo(sideways on) is for the overflow from the Duckpond, it will also (i) provide free drainage for the flower garden and (ii) Give Senior Managment a "wetland" environment to plant up. PS I am going to cover the orange wavin sewer pipe with chicken wire mesh, and plant a Wisteria or sommat climbing to mostly hide it.
  21. Need(obviously) to keep the leafy stuff/very fine branches out. Is that a "top filling" ETA boiler. They do do one that is advertised to burn mixed timber
  22. Good luck! Having tried and worked my way up to a "proper" Polytarp from Cunningham covers. Which still pulled the eyelets out, despite being very carefully secured. No subsitute for a proper woven from linen tarpaulin. PS Sailcloth if it could be got? But presumably sailcloth useless in respect of abrasion or rubbing therefore no good for covering.
  23. Thank you 100% wtf no Politican dares mentions an "end-game" or suggests a stable population society, I do not know. Well I do actually.
  24. Options are a bit limited surely. Either got to bag (an thinking a disposable net bag) Then hand-ball into the firebox. BUt Bound to be voids, UNLESS someone designs a tubular firebox to suit the bag diameter. Hmmm? Better get my HB doodling pencil fired up. Or use the small logs as bulk fuel. And Load into a hopper with a loading shovel. Buts that is a commercial op, and this stuff more likely to be a small output operation. cheers M
  25. Good luck Predator!
