  1. Seen plenty 3 ton tracked dumpers with post knockers on the back of them here in Argyll Scotland. I have a 3 ton excavator which I've used with a post knocker on a couple of jobs, think it has a 200kg weight on it, not the most stable of setups but you just need to make sure you have the knocker on the uphill side when your tracking on steep ground!
  2. I've got a winch mounted to a bucket on my 3 tonner and it's got a roller fairlead. It's a handy bit of kit for small jobs where it's not worth getting the skidder in. You can lift the arm to get the drag over stumps and steer it with the slew as long as the logs not too heavy. As above have a look at a and b services website, they are exelelent engineers and have been doing this type of stuff for years.
  3. I'm based in Argyll Stephen, who were you working for in Argyll? Yeah I know the price will vary site to site but I think it would be a good way to do it as the winch is payed by the ton so when the winch is making decent money so are the cutters and chokermen. Sorry that should really be chokerpersons these days
  4. Cheers for the replies, yeah I've always cut for hourly or daily rate myself but I'm setting up my own skyline crew and just wanted to see what piece work rate would work out at. 3 quid a ton sounds about right for cutting and I'm guessing chokering would be less than that?
  5. Are there no skyline winch crews on arbtalk?
  6. Anyone know the going rate per ton for cutters and chokerman working with a skyline winch dragging whole trees? I know the price will differ with timber size but a rough price will do to get me started. Cheers.
  7. The fc frameworks are a joke! You don't have to be good at the job just good at filling out the paperwork and telling a good story about how great you are. 😛
  8. what is a pti course???
  9. id agree with the unimog, chipper and mower, ive had tractor and chipper for last 10 years and although it has served me well it can be painfully slow on long road journeys and if you need to remove chip from site you need another vehicle. unimog can do it all in one.
  10. what grade of engine oil should be used in the above engine? cheers.
  11. Cheers, is there extra tax to pay on top for taking it back to uk?
  12. anyone on here bought a unimog in europe and taken it back to uk? been browsing the net and found loads for sale at about half the price atkinson vos are selling them for. how did you go about it?
  13. jmac

    Weather..

yeah heat is fine if your lying about drinkin beer! not so nice when your draggin to the chipper or cuttin an burnin rhoddies.
  14. where abouts in argyll are you? i use a and b services at killin, they are very helpfull and quite often have parts in stock.
  15. top wire might be insulated but not worth risking it, contact power company.
  16. cheers pete.
  17. anyone on here know what hydraulic and gear oil the kwikchip 327 ecoline pto chipper takes? think its a 2000 model. cheers.
  18. If possible get someone with plenty experiance of this type of fencing to do the job with you, you will prob learn loads from them. I price per m and add on 15 pound per strainer, the farmer should tell you what spec of fence he wants you to build. Testing the ground is a good idea, plenty fencers lost money by hitting rock!
  19. Yeah your prob right hamdogg, its not easy living on 80 quid a day once you've paid all your expenses but without felling experience and more tickets its hard to get any more money from forestry contractors!
  20. 80 quid a day is at the bottom end of the scale up here for a cutter with about 150 quid being top end. Cutters with only cs 30 - 31 would only get bottom end money . Fuel and saw costs are usually much higher for production forestry.
  21. Level one irata course is a week long, you have to log 1000hrs on the ropes before you can progress to level two. Level one course is fairly straight forward.
  22. I just had a verbal agreement with the guy so think I will follow your advice and walk away. Cheers.
  23. I do agree with you Robert.s its not a good practice doing tree work for wood but its very rare a customer wants the timber taken away from site in Argyll anyway, usually they want it for firewood. Firewood guy is desperate for hardwood so i could have made a decent wage on the job.
  24. sorry meant to say they are a charitable trust who were given a small piece of woodland to look after, they dont collect money for sick children or anything like that, if that were the case i would not hesitate in doing the job. Just annoying that they get me to do the time consuming dismantling beside main road because im insured and give someone with no insurance the slightly easier and quicker felling part of the job.
  25. I was asked to dismantle and fell about 100 ton of unsafe beech trees for a local charity, they were not wanting to spend much money on the job so i agreed to carry out the work and my payment would be the timber. I was passing the other day and noticed one of the trees had been felled, when i asked the guy in charge he said they only wanted me to remove 1 large beech 1 med beech and a med pine that were beside the main road as they had a guy from the village felling the rest. Basically the jobs been cut by 75 ton! i had arranged to sell the timber to a firewood dealer so am now letting him down. Pissed me off a tad. I am thinking about telling them to get on with it without me, What would you do?
