  1. Surely Estover aren’t paying the same price for this as a firewood merchant would though?
  2. I’ve used one a fair bit and it’s a handy tool to have around. On the right trees it works really well but if you are over ambitious things can get out of hand quickly. On anything heavy or with a significant lean a winch will be a better (if slower) option. On bigger trees the ground conditions are important as the base can sink into the ground or just slide out if you’re not careful.
  3. No, unfortunately it’s just a fact of life now.
  4. They’re a bit of a red herring and often aren’t present. Your photos show classic symptoms of Chalara dieback of ash.
  5. It’s not wrong. If a customer has poor service and writes a review which says they wouldn’t recommend the tradesman then Checkatrade won’t allow them to post the review on line. Instead they have to submit it in writing to Checkatrade, who then give the tradesman a few weeks to try to deal with it (ie put things right, or just buy the customer off). After that time if it’s not settled they will publish the review, but may edit it if they choose to. And then the tradesman gets the last word (ie replies that the customer is making it all up). It’s a bullshit system designed to favour the advertisers as that’s where Checkatrade’s money comes from. If it was straight then a bad review would be as easy to leave as a good one.
  6. He would need to be a determined screwball though as it’s all a bit of a scam and they make it difficult to leave any reviews which are less than excellent. All in all Checkatrade is pretty meaningless, and is just about making money for Checkatrade. Some people still think it stands for something though so it might bring in work, but I wouldn’t want to get too reliant on it.
  7. Any news on when the machine’s going to be here? Looking forward to seeing it in action! Are you planning to be the UK agent for them?
  8. I though you might enjoy this beauty that I came across yesterday!
  9. Tapatalk is working for me again on iOS. Thanks
  10. I use the generic Tapatalk app for all my forum browsing now. It’s much slicker than any browser interface and means I have all my forums in one place. It’s not working for Arbtalk now, which I presume is the same problem as with the Arbtalk branded app? It’s working fine for everything else though. I hope you’re able to get it sorted again!
  11. I've got an app called How High or Far that works pretty well. It's not as good as a laser rangefinder/clinometer but is good enough to be a handy tool. How High or Far by Colmertech LLC https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/how-high-or-far/id363635777?mt=8
  12. I bought a capstan winch from Treadlight a year or so ago, and they were very helpful and easy to deal with. I went for the DOCMA which is lightweight but really nicely built. It's not only the cheapest option, but the pulling speed is about 50% faster than the EDER and almost twice as fast as the PWC. Treadlight sell them all though, and if you're not sure which is the best one for you give Sion a ring and I'm sure he'll be happy to talk you through it.
  13. A few more to consider for your library. Like Brushcutter's recommendations, these two are pretty much standard reading for anyone with a serious interest in forestry: The Silviculture of Trees Used in British Forestry, Peter Savill Woodland Conservation and Management, George Peterken This is a new book, published in 2016, but should be required reading: The Grey Squirrel Management Handbook, Charles Dutton And whilst non specifically about forestry, these two give a really useful and interesting background to the history of woodland in the UK: Woodlands, Oliver Rackham Ancient Woodland, Oliver Rackham

    Lewis winch

Life is waaay to short to use a Tirfor to extract timber. They are great for pulling trees over, but painfully slow if you need to move something any distance. How about a petrol capstan winch? I bought a Docma winch from Treadlight Forestry and it's a great bit of kit. This is the sort of thing you should be looking at for this job. http://treadlightforestry.co.uk/product/docma-vf105-red-iron/
  15. Apart from the extra cost would there be any drawback to having a winch fitted?
  16. It will make the setup more versatile, but are you likely to have enough situations where you can't get within crane reach to make it worthwhile? Good to see a small machine that doesn't need a midget to operate it btw
  17. Have a look at the assessment schedule and make sure you know all the bits where it says "demonstrate knowledge". You'll be asked questions on these and if you can rattle off the answers it will really take the pressure off http://www.nptc.org.uk/assets/documents/0d21b9566fd04492aaffa6b25f2e3432.pdf
  18. For some reason they just need to be tightened a bit less than normal. Just snug but not tight seems to do it, and although it feels like it's not done up enough they don't come loose.
  19. The standard 346 caps are tool less. If you can't undo them by hand then you're just doing them up too tight.
  20. Not too bothered about any guidelines in this case, more interested in whether it will work or if the friction from the over size rope will make using a pulley pointless.
  21. Does anyone know if you can get away with using 14mm rope with something like an ISC micro or Petzl Fixe? It's not going to have big loads on it, I'm just looking for a cheap upgrade to a 3:1 system.
  22. Tuf Cut shears cost about £3 and work well. A Raptor costs about £70 and has shears plus 5 extra "features" that you don't need. I know which one I'll be keeping in my first aid kit!
  23. If you bought it from Euroforest as FSC certified then they should provide you with the documents you need.
  24. It may have come from woodland that doesn't have an approved management plan. A felling licence doesn't require a full plan to be in place. Until recently a FC approved management plan didn't require a separate felling licence, so a standalone licence may suggest that there is no management plan. Was it sold to you as guaranteed UKFS compliant? If you've got a copy of the felling licence then you could contact the local FC Woodland Officer to see if they can tell you any more info.
