  1. I've had boats of one sort or another (mostly small and unreliable!) for as long as I can remember. I lived on Tequila for three years, went round Britain in just over a week in the RIB, and now have a share in this very lovely Dutch steel cruiser on the Thames. There are some more pictures on the web site: Shimmering Steel private boat share syndicate on the Thames Still nothing as cool as Al Baker's portage and bivouac though
  2. Haix Protector Pro is what I wear on my size 14 feet. Super comfortable, completely waterproof, and reassuringly expensive! Jonesies will order them in for you if they don't have any in stock.
  3. Here you go: http://www.getsaws.com/PDFs/w9600001.pdf
  4. Yes it does lock on. I agree, it sounds like you've got one from a bigger winch. The handle I have isn't telescopic either.
  5. Finishing off after the snow had gone. Not so cold, but muddy and slippery instead. Give me the snow any day!
  6. Here's another job from a few weeks ago. Clearing fallen and overhanging trees at the edge of a block of woodland as the owner of the field wants to put up a new fence. Land owner is dealing with the brash in exchange for the wood. First day in the snow. Cold, but beautiful!
  7. It is great, but it's hard work. It's a deceptively difficult site, with a lot of awkward manual handling. The first couple of days were pretty demoralising as it didn't feel like we were making any real progress. Once you start breaking through to the edges though you can suddenly see a massive difference.
  8. Thanks. It's been a couple of weeks in total so far, but we've been doing odd days here and there. We've got a couple more days lined up to finish tidying up and take down some edge trees that were left on the next coupe along. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. And a few pictures of us finishing off on site . . .
  10. A bit of cunning extraction using a 4x$ and a redirect in a handy Douglas Fir The site was sloping and slippery, with a rideside ditch to negotiate. No wonder there hadn't been much recent interest in working it commercially!
  11. Here are some pictures from a job I have been working on for the South Downs National Park. It's at Henley Copse near Midhurst in West Sussex, on the Cowdray Estate. We were cutting chestnut coppice to improve the habitat for the local Pearl-bordered Fritillary Colony. Here are a few pictures of before we started:
  12. I've got one of these, and it's a great bit of kit - relatively light too which is a bonus. I suspect that the rope diameter (and the layup) will be quite critical. I don't know what you could get away with, but I'm not sure I'd want to risk it though. The UK distributor is: Austin & McLean Limited 3 Old Barn Farm Road Three Legged Cross, Wimborne Dorset BH21 6SP 01202 828 700 The manufacturers are pretty helpful too for technical info [email protected] Good luck!
  13. I have given up with filling out on-line forms for my insurance as they just can't cope with the businesses that I'm involved with. Needing business use for two unrelated businesses seems to make it even more difficult. This time round I managed to find a proper broker who I can actually talk to and explain what I do.
  14. ...and here's the picture Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Here's my Suzuki. It's no gnarly off-roader, but all terrain tyres on it gets me in and out of the woods OK. And of course it comes in handy for any hairdressing jobs in the side! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. Scrap that. All seems fine again now!
  17. The Arbtalk app won't connect for me at the moment. Is there a problem, or is it something at my end?
  18. You can't get size 14 chainsaw wellies, but they are horrible and you don't want them anyway. There are size 14 chainsaw boots, but they are extra expensive. I wear Haix Protector Pro which are very comfortable and waterproof. Got them from Jonesies. Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. I dabble a bit. We've got a couple of sit on tops, but I've booked a week at Plas Y Brenin in the summer for the kids and me to do some proper paddling.

Oh, and the arbtalk app seems to be Tapatalk2 already - at least that's what it says in the title bar...

Just downloaded the app. Not sure about the colour scheme though!
  23. Aaarrh. Does your PPE still include an eye patch? How's the driving coming on?
  24. In the same way that the three knot system isn't extinct. We all know it exists, but who would actually use it? Generally speaking if most people here have a problem with a chainsaw they'll get another one out rather than resorting to the trusty felling axe and broad saw. I suspect that climbing will go the same way before too many years go by.
