  1. My first year doing this and i have learnt a lot, seasoned wood is going to have to go up in price! and i will try to sell more direct, as garden centres and garages taking the mick a bit, paying me £1.5 a bag and selling for £4
  2. pallets on the floor not had any mould since air moves up through the logs
  3. We stored oak in a barn and a lot of the logs went mouldy. This year we put pallets down and the logs are much drier NO MOULD. We did bag up a load of logs before Xmas and the mice ran riot, so we tend to put off using nets until the last minute. We bought some old storage units and keep dry bagged stuff in there now!
  4. A friend of mine has made me a custom log splitter, and has now made a second for himself. Would anyone be interested in one as he is thinking of doing this on a regular basis. It has a seven inch splitting wedge, and splits wood up to 700mm long. Need flow rate of at least 30l/min and has return rate of 20 seconds on tractor tick over. £1100?
  5. im no expert, but i work on giving 20% of what i think i can sell it at. Even paying 20% will not make you rich, and reckon with all the labour that leaves me on £10-£15 an hour depending if the wood goes to garden centers etc or i sell direct. I tried a 50-50 split with a farmer 2 years ago and I made nothing! Will not have chnged only get worse with increasing overheads chain oil etc etc.....
  6. I would be interested but like Windfall £50 a tonne is not a bargain, I pay £20 a tonne tops, and £36 for Ash and Oak. Let us know if price comes down, and it would be worth the trip
  7. I am considering buying a 3 phase power pack for my log splitter, rather than using a tractor. Does anyone have any experience of using one for this?
  8. Have you tried Forestry commission wood lot auctions?
  9. My mate hates his says he can't get the oven warm enough as rads take all heat away. Another mate reckons you shouldn't run rads off them?? Especially wood burning stoves etc as they don't get to the temp of coal. I have Little wenlock at front of house and villager (cheap) with hotplate in dinning room, cook stews etc on this, I was going to spend a lot of money with a rayburn but was put off, and stuck to the villager! My mate burnt 1.5 tonne of oak in his rayburn over Xmas period!! Having said that if you get the wood free and are being given the rayburn then i would go for it, but make sure you can source wood free (sounds like you do)! With wood prices going up it might not remain the cheap option if you have to buy logs! Maybe consider running 3-4 rads to ensure you get temp up for cooking, let me know how you go as I may be moving shortly and am considering my own heating options cheers. My mate is here and said to decide if your main aim is to heat the house or one room nd cook on?
  10. I wood be interested in the beech, how much££

  11. I stack the nets in a storage unit, as the mice seem to love monofilament if left in the shed:) Deliver small quantities in pick-up, larger loads on pallet 50 with industrial cling film to keep secure. I have got more efficient in terms of cutting and bought two german saws which have really speeded the job up. From lengths of wood two of us can do 80 bags in 2 hrs, that includes cutting wood into 6 inch lengths, would be interested in what you do and if you have any tips to speed job up further?
  12. If there is a canal near you go and pay them a visit, they are regular customers as they can't store too much!
  13. I found it difficult at first as i do hardwood sticks. However, once i got one or two big customers it took off a bit. I do good business with the narrow boat dwellers they love it, once a week they trundle down the towpath and get their sticks, I agree those with money want to pay peanuts I did start a thread to set up a co-operative but it would be so hard to control quality etc. but a good way to ensure we get a reasonable price for supplying the big boys:)
  14. I average about £1.50 a net taking into account small shops, private sales and garages etc. that is for Kindling (hardwood sticks). If you can get £1.4 then I would suggest you are about right with your pricing. Good luck with Kindling I started in September
  15. We are based in Sandbach just south of Manchester if you wanted 100+ bags would be worth me delivering
  16. thin sticks so they still light ok and good for getting wet coal going etc
  17. i use ash cherry and oak offcuts that are supplied to me on artic
  18. The reason i produce hardwood kindling is exactly for that reason renewablejohn, it was the only guaranteed source of none treated wood i could find, very hard to tell if pallets have been treated especially some of the older ones.
  19. Fair comments but when i get offered £1 bag kindling and see B&Q at £5+ does grate me a bit! Just thought that rather than Kindling wars and one post suggested it would be better to co-operate - agree i have a lot to learn
  20. If a network of kindling and log suppliers was set up and we all supplied to local stores under one name then surely we would increase our profit 100%? The Co-operative were interested in my products but i couldn't meet demand! If a number of us produced kindling under one name nationally then we could take on larger orders, instead of working for peanuts?
  21. We have a Kindlet and could produce 300 bags a day for you in the summer. Bring the Machine to you (3 phase), process and bag it, do a full week but you would have to put us up , and have the wood ready in 6inch rings. Let me know if you are interested
  22. We could supply you with kindling kiln dried hardwood sticks at £1.2 a bag, you should get close to 200 if stacked neatly. I have a friend in Lancaster so could organise a trip to see him and meet you there?

  23. Supply kindling any amount and very dry hardwood M6 J17, delivery maybe an issue?
  24. I can supply Kindling hardwood kiln dried 9-14% moist content any quantity given a little notice, we are junction 17 M6. I could inquire about haulage if you are interested. the nets are 50-40cm and packed
