  1. I had a friend make one from an old JCB RAM goes through everything! I find if you put Elm on its side and only put half the blade on the wood it splits even when the grain is twisted. It runs off the hydraulics on a tractor and it hasn't failed. Warning i tend to split old dry wood in long lengths and then put them through circ saw since i got put on my arse by an elm ring which was cut into 10 inch, made a mess split my lip:) have fun!
  2. Feel for you, it is hard enough making money without having to cope with that!
  3. i will let him know about the fire bricks and tell you how he gets on, thanks
  4. What quantity and where exactly?
  5. My mate has recently had one installed and it is logs only, having trouble to get it up to temp. Heats rads up ok but can't get oven hot enough to cook in. I supplied him with a tonne of kiln dried hardwood offcuts and this has got oven up to 180 for the first time. I would advise from what he says to make sure you don't run too many rads off it and get multi fuel, plus spend time researching which is best for you and not cheapest
  6. This might affect log sales Border Officers Raid Sandbach Timberyard (From Crewe Guardian) Biggest producer of firewood i know of! I wondered why i couldn't get any sales:(
  7. £35 0.5m3
  8. £55/tonne would be far too expensive if you were in this area. Been quoted £28/tonne before Xmas from midlands for similar deal. £55 by the time it was processed and seasoned, i would get £70/tonne a lot of work for £15 and i take it price doesn't include delivery? I am paying £25/tonne on average and am getting a lot of stuff free if i pick up at mo.
  9. Done some business cards and will take 25 bags of each product on the store with leaflet inside. Notice the type that attend this farmers market tend to be the type to have real fires, so fingers crossed It is on Sat 12th so i will update you after! Put an add on the logpile website and that seems to be working, plus will get listing on here when i get 5 minutes.
  10. Picked up today, 3 new customers and plenty of old on the phone, must be pay day? Caveman Dave im trying a farmers market for the first time, on the 12t, will let you know how it goes!
  11. Likewise Xmas was mad, especially Xmas Eve (my first year so i was soft enough to deliver). It went really quiet start of Jan, but picked up last week, I reckon some of that is temperature and some folk now have been paid!! Kindling sales went through the roof at Xmas, but a lot of places i supply sell Xmas trees, so i reckon that was due to people having their annual fire for Xmas to go with their real Xmas tree! Logs picked up this week especially bulk orders, kindling quiet! Good thread
  12. Go for hydraulic ram splitter, i tried screw type and didn't like it. A friend made me a hydraulic splitter to my spec and wouldn't use anything else now.
  13. this is my first year and i started with 40 tonnes of seasoned in crates, and a lot of rings lying around the place. I am aiming to start next season with 150 tonnes seasoned, and have now got infrastructure to store lot more. On top of that i hope to process 4-6 tonnes a week of hardwood kiln dried off-cuts to use as kindling. I spent most of last summer researching etc and nothing seems to season wood like crates, in fact ash and chestnut that i logged in October is reading 20-28% on my moisture meter, logs cut to 8-10 inch lengths
  14. managed to buy some seasoned hardwood and still back a bit on it, but sold out of my own stuff, will prod offer stuff i cut up in Sept for sale by end of Feb.
  15. Don't let EA get wind of you offering that for sale as firewood
  16. Could you send a pic as i am interested but would need to prob pay for suitable transport
  17. Done a bit of asking about and would say the average in Sandbach to Knutsford area is around 70-75 for a decent L200 load, roughly m3. Would be interested if you could do the same for an average price of nets. Big green nets with 20 logs in, and orange 50 by 40cm with around 12 logs in.
  18. Yep if free i could get a flatbed there
  19. Just heard of 1.5 tonne crate of Oak going for £200 which i was getting £70 for two years ago, so i guess I need to put my prices up!!!

  21. I would say it burns quickly for a hardwood, little like willow when dry but hotter!
  22. Had 16 tonnes last year free but i had to collect it, i have sold most of it this year no complaints and am using it myself, I warned customers that had open fires that it might spit, and even they have not complained. I would offer £25 a tonne as I agree you will have to season it, but once dry it is great, I have just put some on my log burner and it is roaring away!
  23. 18 stoner it is still 5% checked on Website
  24. I am from Cheshire and in a local rag it said that installing log stoves was the most popular home improvement in the area for 2010. Doesn't help you but was interesting read! I am finding that the canals are great for improving business, and i deliver weekly on towpaths:)
