  1. Would struggle to get much above £8 an hour I reckon. The attitude in the industry towards pay and availability of cheaper almost robotic foreign workers sets a low benchmark across the horticulture industry. Plus the way schools have used it to occupy the students that struggle in other lessons, does not give it much credibility. Anyone can do the garden because most homeowners have an under achieving one, so a genuine plants person not esteemed much. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  2. As stated in many posts elsewhere, 346xp is a pleasure to use for long sessions. I bought a second one whilst I could. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. Microwave trick is Weight piece of wood measure volume by immersing in a vessel of water Microwave it Weight again Calculate wood moisture loss by loss of weight. If volume is measured by water displacement in measuring jug it's very accurate. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  4. I was profoundly deaf from 4 years of age, who do I blame? My mother for playing 60s music.
  5. Ambulance chasing owt for nowters :thumbdown:What a pain, contributing to a pitiful society Did the government force us to use saws and mans toys. No we just wanted to get on and do PRODUCTIVE work unlike the education system created layabouts, If I had to go into school/ etc, to do an industry related lecture. I would despair. A truck driver who was 70 odd I was chatting to said at his cpc training course to the instructor "Where are the young ones that the industry needs to come in to it?" Instructor replied "There is lots of them look in this room" They went through everybodies age , 4 or them were over retirement age. The 4 the instructor thought was young was 39,40 and 2 42s. Everyone else was inbetween. Everyone wants money for nowt and hate work. Our ancestors would disown us that do have ago at working without moaning, never mind the rest.
  6. As said nice and simple. Would not believe its the same chap as the forum, looks professional and no mention of BISH BASH BOSH! Or playing on your lawn with big toys. Down to business Steve, how much and how are you going to reward Arbtalkers per visit to help your web ratings.
  7. You could very well be right.hope you get sorted at a reasonable price. I've been there with a transmission repair bill that cost nearly the value of the tractor. It hurts. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk

  12. I did actually a few years ago, but I was refering to the OP. Not enough resources for rural crime yet miles out of town. Camera vans and sneaky officers hiding until the last minute.
  13. 20 miles out of town as well.
  14. Don't know much about it really, read it in a propagation book. Probably lethal to mr squirrel .:001_smile:I suppose if you are in the wilds of wilderness America, who else is going to be around. I'd personally be annoyed by the shots that missed and damaged the tree. Probably banned in the EU due to insect habitat disturbance.
  15. In the states professionals shoot them off various trees with guns.
  16. As Matt says concrete is a rot accelarator. Bash in or backfill. Only use concrete with concrete or metal posts. Many however do use concrete. But do they care about lifespan of their work.
  17. It is really easy to make your own spiral guard from water or gas pipe. Get a piece of steel tube that the plastic pipe will go through, at one end hacksaw an angle ( 45 degree or near enough.)through enough to fit a stanley knife blade through, but not so it reaches the other side of the pipe by 5mm or more, Fix this tube in a vice. Cut required length of plastic pipe with a little bit extra to handle it with. Drill a hole near one end, to insert a screwdriver or pry bar to turn it. Face the blade towards the end you insert pipe. Push pipe in an turn. You will probably save more in the time you do it than you could earn. Its way overpriced.
  18. Just had another thought. I saw new urban planting at Leeds arena last year. All the trees had up to 6ft high wrapped in hessian around the stem, a practice used to prevent damage in transit. They either sent clueless staff to plant them or left them for vandal resistance perhaps? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  19. Arrowhead would probably not force the logs apart enough. Power is another issue. We use a 21hp compact tractor and it jams and fails to split enough sometimes. I would not cut off the wedge. It is a shame they have welded the head on to the ram, you could've experimented with different heads. You could tack weld some tapered triangles on each side, see if that makes a difference. Grind off if no gain. I reckon pressure(power ) is your issue, your are not getting the 10 tonne potential. Bit like an ordinary person riding a tour de france bike.
  20. Thanks 10 Bears, Expect a deluge of pm's from us non office competent types.
  21. Did you do it yourself Steve? I did something by hand a while back like this. Tedious!
  22. I'd just knock off the £4 for your 20 minutes you wasted.
  23. Sorry to bring up an old scratched record. But HGV, special license needed. CPC. Trucks generally over £100,000 minimum to buy new. Authorities ready to hunt you down like a fox. Working out the maths of drivers rules EU regs, liable for not doing petty things with big fines such as not carrying previous 28 days records of work. (could be a £1000 fine if i remember right) Tractor driving is a lot less risk for the money. I've done both and yes wonder why I do the truck driving. Many HGV drivers not on £10 per hour:confused1: But I do agree with your comments Steve.
  24. Got to agree maximum profit is not the only thing going. I enjoy job satisfaction, efficiency of resources. I haven't made charcoal as yet. I do see the logic in seasoned wood achieving greater conversion. If wood shrinks when seasoning, unseasoned must lose that in the charcoal process. Reducing the volume in the contained area. Well done on working out the uploads. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  25. I'm in as well. Simple words of wisdom. Probably only getting revenge on you. Is what will become of it. Express your opinion to people, when it goes wrong they will respect your opinion. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
