  1. I've not ordered it yet, unfortunately other things have taken priority (a nice Getac gps through my door soon ) I thought the review was well written and to the point. When I do get it I could also write a review, could be some time though as I'd want to read cover to cover. I find it helps me to do so first before shelving a book for reference.
  2. Wow, a close call for sure! Its all well and good to say it should have been felled, but if you stood under that tree a year ago what would you have recommended? You can't fell every tree with potential to cause damage unless there is an indicator of potential failure, like root plate movement or fungi or body language hints. Otherwise there'd be no urban trees over 10 foot tall! Very hard to tell from the pics, but if there was nothing to suggest this failure was imminent then the surveyor likely will be ok; As long as the tree owners/surveyor (council?) did all that was reasonable and proportionate given the benefits which mature trees provide. As has been said, with all the mature trees in urban locations, this is a very rare event. It will be interesting to see what happens next...
  3. Seconded, care to elaborate tony?
  4. Thats debatable... After all, what percentage of the trees roots are now in the top 12 inches of soil? Stripping it back down may fo more harm than good. Also some trees cope better with level increases than others, and I suspect willow may cope ok; having evolved with roots having silt deposits over the years on river banks.
  5. I reckon that's the one then, Mr T was right first time. I'll try and catch it next fruiting too. Thank you Where is it you look to see records of host and numbers etc? I've looked before but had no luck...
  6. Never come across this thread before, reminded me of this one http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=47770 I still go past it often, and am surprised it wasn't touched when the council surveyed, reduced or deadwooded half the trees down the avenue its on. I'm keeping an eye out to see if it fruits again. Was your fisillis very soft and spongy David? I'm wondering now if that IS what I found...
  7. Sounds interesting, more bedtime reading
  8. May take a severe lop and top/pollard and live, stay safe, be good for bugs and beasts, stay looking nicer than a little replacement (which will likely be decades before a rope swing will go in it) and swing 'could' stay. Obviously I've not seen the tree in the flesh, but that's what I would aim for...
  9. Looks lovely. Is the pinkish colour of the rotten wood my screen being odd?
  10. Can only get better then, and an exposed weakness is one which won't last, third times the charm A survey key, what be that then? Any chance you might send another email please David?
  11. Not sap rising, could be bacterial wetwood or just grimy water overflowing a cavity. Doesn't look too bad on my tiny little smartphone screen!
  12. Dare I get drawn into this? Did you get the saw running? Ever find out what make and model it is? Where did you mail order it from, why not return it? If it doesn't run how did it get blunt? If you don't like the forum and banter there's no need to use it!
  13. Ah the fingeringhoe oak, what a tree! I put some pics here a while back http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=710215 Didn't realise it was atf recorded, be interesting to see how my measurements compare. When was it recorded, by an arbtalker? As an aside I met Geoff a couple of weeks ago, what a nice guy, and thanks for the work How's the bike going?
  14. Ah, thank you ...
  15. Yesterday morning my 2.5 year old woke, still half asleep and announced she needs to 'feed more souls'. I have no idea what she was dreaming about. Creepy.
  16. Sounds a good job, but I must ask why 20ft is coming off a 140 ft tree?
  17. I have some of this spare and I was planning on having a play and splicing an e2e, maybe a cambium saver too, as I have meters of the stuff. I have watched the marlow YouTube vids and got the samson tools needed, class 1 db and e2e pdf's. I don't think their e2e instructions are applicable in this case. My other question is how long should the bury be? I think 21 times rope diameter, which at 21cm either side of an e2e seems very long? is there another method? Also are there any vids of wire fids being used, I can't find any. cheers all
  18. One could be forgiven for thinking it's a Nectria sp...
  19. If that's only your fourth carving ever, and first meerkat then you have a natural talent! nice one
  20. No harm piling soil up against the exposed root plate and giving it a chance. You could cut and clear if it doesn't work at a later date. If you have the space, leave it to rot, looks good and great for wildlife
  21. QTRA is now used, I think you can also set up your own method/forms. Begs the question can you use QTRA without the training and licence, or is the method itself protected somehow? Not that I would attempt its use without training I might add!
  22. It is/was a tree risk assessment method, I don't know how it was set out; some kind of algorithm? Anyway I think it was only used by pear who don't anymore, and haven't done for years...
  23. It is not notifiable. It is however a controlled plant under (section 9?) the wildlife and countryside act. I believe you must have a license to transport it, and it is an offence to cause it to grow in the wild. The landowner may wish to know about it though...
  24. For anyone who may be interested it seems Pear Tech used to use it in Treeminder, but don't anymore. No idea why, and I don't think it is used elsewhere...
