  1. See my post in employment forum for details
  2. Hi, I am in the process of starting business as a surveyor, but have already lost my first job due to a specific request for a level 3 (ie tech cert qualified) surveyor. I am therefore putting the feelers out for someone with this qual in the essex/suffolk border area to assist me when such jobs arise in the future. I have spoken with my prospective insurer and been told you would need your own insurance. Ideally I would like any of this 'sub contracting' work to be done through me under my company name. Planning ahead, someone with decay detection equipment would be good, for when the need arises. I am happy to discuss terms, rates etc. If it meant getting a job as opposed to not I would not mark up price for the client, but would like to be present for any surveying, as I am keen to learn anything from everyone when possible! Especially those of superior knowledge Pm me if you are interested, thanks for reading.
  3. Bless. Good luck mate!
  4. I clip both ends on one side and suspend my weight off the d's when advancing my main line quite often! Should I not? Is it dangerous, I've always felt safe and always done it
  5. Have a home birth. Everything and everyone in the same comfortable relaxed place, no ambulances, no traveling, no waiting for a bed etc etc.... ...best choice my wife and ever made Hope it all goes smoothly!
  6. The suggestion of saying I never received it was more of a joke, shame it didn't get across as such to some of you! Oh well, have spent 20 mins on an 0845 number to complain, and expect nothing will happen anyway. Hopefully this will stop it in future. And johnsie it wasn't from you, you split tail I won in the raffle from you fit the letter box fine! Thank you
  7. Incredibly poor service, will definitely be complaining
  8. I've just had post delivered, one small package through the letter box, I heard the postman come up the stairs (I live in a flat) post it and leave, no doorbell, no knocking. Hours later when I went out there were two boxes on doorstep, one supposedly to be signed for. Surely this is wrong, anyone could take them! On top of that, I have some very unsavory neighbours and a note on the door saying not to leave parcels with any of them, one currently in prison for theft! What would you do? Complain to royal mail? Or keep it and say it was never delivered! Oh, and last week a parcel was delivered to the right number, but the wrong road! Luckily the guy came and gave it to me, but not before opening it not impressed
  9. Give treelife a call, they offer all sorts, and are very knowledgeable; if they don't have a suitable option I'm sure they can offer advice as to your best route. Good luck
  10. Remember watching it back then and thinking what a whining little ijit he was didn't see the other shows. I wonder if he's still at it, may even be a member here!
  11. Makes a lovely hedge, we regularly trim several, often covered in critters. I forget what they are called, but I don't think (I may well be wrong) they are green/whitefly, but something specific to beech. I've never seen them kill a hedge, two that I trim about 6-8 feet tall are particularly covered in them (and itch like mad when they fall on you!) yet they grow like mad.
  12. Wooly aphids?
  13. With lots of firm but carefull pulling did the trick for me! There may be an easier way that I don't know of/couldn't figure out. I held the unit in a vice and tried various pliers mole grips etc to grab the bolt and wiggle jiggle and pull till it came. As I said, I was replacing the metal casing and had to completely strip it down on two pole saws. The first one I didn't know about the screw thread until I'd tried tapping it out from within the gear housing, given up, and hacksawed it out to put in the new one. Wasn't until I cleaned it up I noticed the thread! It is incredibly tight, but possible, good luck!
  14. I recently changed the metal gear housing on two a few weeks ago as the hooks had snapped off. In doing so I discovered the oil pump is a bugger to remove/ replace! The only way to do it without splitting open the gear housing is to access it through a hole in the bottom, covered with a piece of black plastic, it has a screw thread with which to insert a screw to pull it out with. Very tight! The oil channel then runs to the chain from there, you could try blowing the channel back through perhaps. Make sure to replace it in the same orientation as it came out. Or if it is a newer model the breather valve coming through from where the bar is mounted may be blocked, causing a vacuum, they only cost a few quid to replace. Hope this makes sense and helps
  15. Sorry I don't have pics, but I often see 'buckling' similar to the oak above on London plane with apparently no rot at all. Is this just a feature of them, or body language caused by external factors? Just a thought
  16. Split tail in the post today, thanks fr Jones! Didn't even know I'd won anything

    ipod apps

Don't know if its available on ipod, but android market has a rogers mushrooms app which is pretty good
  18. I'd have said that as just an employee its not/was not your responsibility to check for tpo's. Who did the work I'd have also said is irrelevant, it is up to your boss to deal with that, especially if he's told you that any tree you are sent to work on has been checked. I could be wrong, but I wouldn't sweat it too much. You should be fine
  19. Well its now 6:40 and my teething 10 week old has just gone to sleep! I'll be doin the same I think, no work for me! Hope you all slept well and have a good start to the week
  20. I couldn't see a way, but it took less than 5 mins to do it with my debit card
  21. Not sure if this is the right forum, but I wondered if everyone may care to share their knowledge as regards the specific uses of different species of tree? Here's some to get going: Ash, tools handles. Yew, longbows. Elm, cart wheel hubs. Lime, piano sound boards. Willow, fibres for cord. Oak, tannins for leather. Beech, chopping boards, wooden spoons. The more unusual the better:thumbup:
  22. Looks like Pleurotus to me, I've seen loads this year in the south east, not on lime though. They look well past their best, shame, very tasty! I could be wrong though
  23. This is an excellent cause to fight for, even on a small scale people want their trees, or even wooded areas sanitised and cleared of all dead wood, due to opinions based on unfounded facts. Ie dead wood is dangerous, or must be diseased and therefore removed. I sincerely hope tpo legislation can be changed to provide more protection for these wonderful habitats; you have my support
  24. Thanks for all the input, and Paul I don't feel you derailed this thread, it's nice to see what other people have or plan on having. I currently have about 8 years in the industry, since I realised while in college I didn't want to go to university as I had planned. I left with a levels in chem, biology, and photography (some of hama and monkey d's are wonderful by the way;) ) I started working Saturdays with a local arb who had a tech cert and prof dip, he had me reading lonsdale, shigo etc before I even had my chainsaw ticket! He really set me off on the right foot, educationally and morally with regards 'proper' tree work. I Have passed all but 1 of the written papers in the tech cert with distincion level percentages, the other a merit. I have also passed the management day tree condition exercise with a merit level. I am hoping to do tree safety surveys, and think I have some contacts for 5837 stuff also, which if it goes well could result in plenty of that work. Hama, I agree with you that level 2 is in the grand scheme of things inadequate, but you don't have even that, and you I'm sure are very capable of reports to put prof dip'ers to shame! Everyone needs to start somewhere and I am hoping to start from here, I feel I know my limits and wouldn't hesitate to ask for help or contract work to someone more knowledgeable, after all, that's how we learn! I hope to progress to higher levels of quals as soon as time and money allow, as I agree it's the only way to be truly professional. Good luck with your pti and qtra, I'm sure you'll breeze it.
  25. Hi, expect this has been asked before, but what (aside from insurance) do you need to do reports? Ie 5837 specifies a competent arboriculturist, what is that in law? Or, tree condition/safety surveys, is there a minimum requirement in the eyes of the law? Must you have a certificate of sorts, or does experience count towards competency also? Suspect there may be grey areas surrounding the subject, but any ideas and views would be appreciated
