  1. May I be second please? Also, how does this book club work?
  2. Well illustrated, thank you
  3. Any one doing tech cert management day at Arley this year? Anyone been there before, is it nice?
  4. Find someone local with a 'tree spade' and experience using it, they'll probably be your best option. Where in the country are you based?
  5. Hi fungus, so if a bracket is panic reproducing, what difference might you expect to see in the tube layers? Thank
  6. Green oak tortrix (Tortrix viridana)?
  7. Nope, don't think he read the last one either! Must confess I have not seen the new one, too expensive. Would a public library have one to view?
  8. and/or my thread and Album. Where is this album please? Also would like to thank you for stopping by, I, and many more, are hoping to learn a lot
  9. My boss would call that a 30% reduction, and would NOT be happy if I did anything else, believe me I've tried! The biggest joke is our tree officer would come to check it and say good job!? I
  10. Wow, I wonder what girdled it?
  11. Some pics of the tree as a whole would be good. First thoughts are a work schedule to retrench it, looks like it would make a good pollard. Any signs of fungal fruit bodies? Are there any signs of bending stresses on the heavy laterals?
  12. Sweet find maybe it belongs in a 'trees that look like things that aren't trees' thread?
  13. More harm than good removing it id have said. Little point trying to strengthen it either, just let nature take its course; it may well bridge the gap and callous over ie. It will strengthen itself.
  14. Had a prob with spark on 066 before, it was the lead from the magneto to the plug. Worth checking? I think it came attached to mag, so expensive repair for what was just a dodgy cable!
  15. Well someone's got to fight his corner! He's pukka
  16. Seems a very decay resistant wood, in aforementioned tree was a 60 year old flush cut of about 9 inches diameter near ground level, no decay visible at all. Solid as the newest growth, incredible wood!
  17. Thanks all, gotta love arbtalk and its members! I just checked in Rogers and yes it was cuticularis, the hama strikes again Am I right thinking hf mycelium is white fans, what makes it distinguishable from other mycelium fans? If it is hf, would it only be a problem on stressed cedar, ie compacting from the driveway? Phaeoleus, does it cause decay in cedar? Not sure I've ever seen very rotten cedar wood, something must munch it though!
  18. Would these not show decay on the cross sections? Also there are many other trees unaffected. Including a semi mature copper beech with extensive decay/ hollow trunk and what appears to be hispidus brackets in the cavity (which looks typical hispidus canker like). Honey would 'get' the other stressed trees, no? Or show bootlaces under the bark of the cedar?
  19. Took down a very much dead cedar yesterday, the 3rd dead one to be removed in 4 years, all a stones throw from each other. Also, one more showing yellowing and thinning of the foliage, also a stones throw. Oh, and possibly related, a Scots pine died over the winter, also a stones throw on the other side of the road. My question: what could have caused their demise? All cedars between 100-150 years old, the Scot maybe 35-40. No signs of decay in any of the cedars (what does rot them!) No body language of decay in the Scot (which we will probably remove at some point). My boss thinks the roots 'picked up a seam' in the soil they didn't like! (Same thing he thinks causes die back/stag heading in oak and ash in fields) I reckon the gravel drive the cedars are next to may have more significance, although I'm not convinced its a compaction issue, and its not near the Scot. Did notice one or two 10mm wide beetle galleries under the bark on the trunk, nothing extensive though. So, any ideas or suggestions please?
  20. Sorry to derail, but what is your new avatar hama?
  21. I, and I'm sure others, would happily pay in advance. Maybe other potential 'hama fans' would if they saw a preview? Seriously, I can pay now
  22. Have not noticed tension wood on macrocarpa before, have to keep an eye out
  23. Never doubted ya incredible tree!
  24. 1-2 fists is huge for daldinia! Can't think what else though. Are they hard balls, or more soft, or flat to the trunk?
