  1. Yes it does, thanks was just something I noticed a while back which made me ponder, exceptions to every rule!
  2. Broadleaved trees lay down extra tension wood to strengthen branches. Confers lay down extra compression wood to strengthen branches. Am I correct with the above? Why do eucalyptus not follow suit, are they a type of confer?
  3. Just checked my order form again as this book hasn't arrived, turns out they don't have it in stock! They have said publisher is considering a reprint and will take money from my card as soon as it becomes available, think ill cancel and go elsewhere/ get another book!
  4. Not far off ten I think, its had a very dubious history. Not sure it knew what an oil change was before my mate got it 3 years ago. Hopefully something fresher will mean no cable ties duct tape and bungees!
  5. Mechanic says cost of stripping rebuilding etc isn't as viable as a new/recon engine as its fairly knackered anyway. So its fate is sealed
  6. Have Pollarded tree mentioned above, and it seems some unidentified fung is munching through the sap wood present at the time of wounding, not touching any heart wood or wood laid down since the injury though. Don't know if that's of any help to those more knowledgeable!
  7. I have tapatslk on my HTC desire, and I can't upload pics? Of any size. It just spins the loading logo continuously, I have left it 'uploading' for nearly half an hour before, and nothing. Yet it uploaded my avatar in a minute or two, so it must be capable! Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated
  8. Awesome pics, incredible specimens! That plane is huge
  9. Thanks all, wasn't a quick enough on the job fix, so stacked and habitat piled the brush in a neighbouring woodland (with the owners consent!) And off to be checked/repaired in the morrow.
  10. I thought hispidus on ash was mostly confined to the tops?
  11. Not under warranty, sounds like it could be coming from within the crank casing, which I'm guessing is worse! Oh well, a trip to someone with mechanical expertise me thinks...
  12. Gx620 Honda twin on a timberwolf 125 ph Was running on full revs, not chipping and suddenly made an awful noise in the engine so turned it off. Tried to start it and there is a metallic rattle from under one of valve covers (everything under it looks fine) and it won't run more than a few seconds. Any ideas please, stuck with big pile of sticks in a small garden! Thank you
  13. Just ordered fungal strategies, thanks again for the link. Anyone else who's interested better be quick, reduced to a less than £35 with postage, but only till the 31 march! Just got to wait for delivery
  14. Ah, ok is it then dealt with on the floor with saws and a timberwolf or equivalent, or something more macho?
  15. Does anyone mind my asking, why was a crane being used in the first place? Why not climb and drop/lower smaller bits? Am I missing something? Bet that made the ole sphincter nip up a bit!
  16. Luverly juberly
  17. Ah ok, makes sense, not head it called that before, thanks
  18. Sorry to ask, what do you mean by this?
  19. I'll be interested in any answers also. Looked at an oak last week which had a 15-20 year tear from storm damage about 30 feet up. The tear extends around 10 feet, and then all the way to the ground in a continuous strip the bark is dead and flaking off. Can see no hollows or decay, no epicormic, in fact no growth from the tear down. However the rest if the tree above looks full of life and healthy. Could be the same thing...
  20. Sorry yes, occlude, damn predictive text on mobile! I'm still not clear in my mind how the tree 'decides' the contacting bark stops and joins xylem instead? Maybe I'm looking into it too thoughtfully. And I shall go now in search of info on inosculation, thank you
  21. Is anyone able to explain (or point me in the direction of an explanation) how- A trunk is injured/ branch removed; The wound includes, and the new woody tissue gets to the point of sealing off/making contact with itself; The bark of the two sides meets, and then instead of bark on bark, the cambiums fuse. I wonder the same about twin stems with included bark which fuse to form a continuous woody cylinder? How does the tree know when to do this? And how physically it achieved? I have wondered for a long time!
  22. Cheers for the link, cheaper than I've found it elsewhere. I wonder what what number were printed?
  23. Sounds good, especially as it says on treesource It's out of print. Don't know if it will be back in print? Get it while I can then! Cheers Ps, why one over t'other?
  24. Hi hama, what would your top 5 be, I have a birthday coming up looking at maybe diagnosis and prognosis or fungal strategies of wood decay - could you maybe give a few pros/cons for each? Or suggest something entirely different? Like wait for yours!
