  1. So these bark sinks, is the area of sunken bark dead? Ie, how can you tell if it is a sink, or necrotic bark with the surrounding wood still laying down thick growth? Sorry if its a silly question or obvious answer!
  2. Compression buckles, caused by the forces present as a result of the compression fork below it? Or, and I'm sure hama will correct, auricularia mesenterica causing wrinkly socks!
  3. Haven't read through this thread so maybe its been mentioned already: chainsaw protective climbing line? Similar to trousers filling as a core, or interwoven in the ropes outer layers. Could save a life, but, cost, weight, practicality? And how often does anyone cut through their line!?
  4. Cool make good bonsai!
  5. First found this on a holly hedge years ago when I started as an arb, gashed my thumb on my new and very Sharp knife trying to find out what was in it. Nothing but wood was the disappointing answer! Still got the scar and occasional tingling though, damn my inquisitive mind...
  6. Don't mean to derail, but what of hispidus on London plane and Apple, also very common IME? I know its considered less serious on l plane (due to the rays within the wood) but it must become a concern at some point. Would fb's on a healthy looking plane indicate compartmentalised mycelium and panic fruiting for instance? Apple- I've seen some serious hollowing of trunks in orchards, however, orchard style pruning leaves very little of lever arms, so no failures. Others experience/knowledge would be good
  7. Ta very much
  8. Where does it say out of leaf, or that the leaves dropped for Autumn/winter even? Now I'm confused?! It will still have a spring bud burst and new leaves, surely? As said, leave it a while and see what happens, its unlikely to fall imminently. From what I can see in the pics it doesn't look dead, maybe suffered in the snow over winter. Many around me did, existing leaves browning and drying, some now starting fresh growth though.

    Sick Ash

Strip down the trunk seems to be originating from an old pruning(?) wound just below crown break: related to hispidus perhaps? Any thoughts on which Ganoderma is it? It could make a difference to management recommendations. I'll hold back on my own thoughts for management and see what monkey/hama/fungus/some other clever bugger makes of it first!
  10. Over what time frame were these shots taken please? I've only ever found this twice, I think. Once on a willow when I first started this work and wasn't interested in fungi really, looking back it was quite impressive and I don't see what else it could have been. And last year what I think was a well past its best little'un on a cherry. Would love to find a nice one
  11. No prob, so is this how the book club works across the board? whoever is next in line as per the right thread, pm's who currently has it?
  12. What do/did you make of this?
  13. How do we know what address to send them on to? I can't remember if I gave an address when I registered on AT, but if I did it has changed now.... who do I tell?!

    Logos?

Yes please, graffic designers around me all quoted above £150 for just a basic design!
  15. Don't know if this should be in your q&a, but is it only ectomycorhizea which are macrofungi, or are there endomyco's which produce 'mushroom' fruit bodies too?
  16. Never heard the hotspot referred to as the neutral fibre zone; why 'neutral' fibre, care to enlighten me? Please, thank you

    Logos?

I'm looking for a new business logo, something like an old twisted trunk veteran/bonsai, in silhouette form. I have found one on the net I like from a stock photo site which is for sale, with the stipulation no business logo use!? So, can anyone help? Maybe a point in the right direction, or instructions on how I can take a photo of a suitable tree (I know of many!) and turn it into a silhouette. Any help or advice appreciated
