  1. This is exactly what the chap did, dealer did his checks and because its a 'private hire' and not 'lease hire' it wouldn't show up on any of the checks. But i'm still at beggers belief that the dealer bought a tractor of that value from someone he didn't know. I know i wouldn't have! I'd like to be a fly on the wall if the chap walks back into the dealers office with another 'bargain'!!!
  2. now this may sound a daft question, but is it the mould just a problem from a visual point or from a burning point? As i've never even considered it a problem before!
  3. i've got a browns circular saw and the Tungsten tips are worth every penny!!! Which ever u buy, and i have no experience of anyother makes, just don't skimp and not have the tungsten tips u'll always regret it in my opinion!
  4. couldn't have put it any better!!! its what u pay dealers for in the new price!!!
  5. from what i've laboured behind, all mizers can cut square timber, only a case of turning the timber 90degree's and making another cut. but i'm sure they're some serious skill to doing it well. Only seen a peterson saw working once and it was great for cutting square timber but ur restricted to the width timber u can plank compared to a mizer in my opinion. just my pennies worth.
  6. thankyou, well i thought i sort of knew the chap who hired it. Was recomended by a friend to him, which i then mistakenly thought he must know quite well, but actually only gave my number in the pub one night. So my fault on that front for not doing a bit more digging before hiring. And paperwork is only like it is, as theft has been a problem and my insurance company suggested we ought to go through and check where we are with it. Hated it at time, all the B******t u have to put in it and time it takes, but glad i did now. Father always said ur best lessons are from mistakes, and i've done alot of learning in my lifetime!!!
  7. now i admit to know nothing about marine diesel, but surely if this "bunker C" stuff is the bit left over at the end then there isn't much poke left in it??? But the devil on my other shoulder says surely if they can burn it then it must be good for the enviroment as its less waste to get rid of.........
  8. Morning all, have been having an interesting couple of days, thought any of you out there who hire equipment either short or long term may want to be aware of this. It all started with a letter from the DVLA informing me that a new V5 had been requested for one of my tractors and if this was correct to ignore the letter. As the tractor was on a long term hire i rang them to question the request. To cut a long story very short, the chap i had hired it to had taken it to a dealer and sold it. Seeing as i put GPS tracking on all new equipment (we've had alot stolen in last year or two!) it wasn't too difficult for me to locate the machine. Needless to say when i turned up in the dealer's yard and explained the situation he was none to happy. We got the police involved, which was an interesting experience, as they started off by saying that i had to prove i owned the machine or they couldn't do anything, and it seems a V5 doesn't cut it. So luckily when i produced a hire agreement which stated the hire period and terms and conditions and i demonstrated the GPS on the machine was linked to my phone, they agreed it was my machine. The dealer now looking very pale said, what about my money? (bearing in mind the value was close to £110K). The police are currently investigating to try and locate the devious party, but have said ifi hadn't had a signed hire agreemnt it would have been a much longer saga to get my machinery back. So make sure u have upto date and valid (ie T&C's and signatures!) hire agreement just in case someone pulls a fast one on you!
  9. i'd do it no worries, so long as the neighbourhood was destined for demolition anyway............
  10. right as a farmer here's how i've understood what they are doing, they will phase out 'red' diesel in its current form from a date which i don't think they actually fully agreed on yet (probably have to make a special committe for that:001_tt2:) and then we will have to buy 'white diesel but long as we can prove we use it for non-road uses we can then apply for a rebate on the tax difference. IE what they're hoping is some won't bother and it'll make them more money. This is how i understand it, but in my eye's its only going to make it more difficult to police as who knows which tank i've filled my landy up from????? As for new diesel with the bio-diesel element so far we not had a problem, but we only just getting to the first winter with it sat in tanks longer especially the combine. Which i don't want to drain as i like to start it every few weeks during the winter to keep the anitfreeze mixed up and the oil splashed about the engine. All in all, i'm sure we'll all end up getting done over a little bit more!!!
  11. whats on my bench........empty mugs of tea and a copy of the farmers guardian!!!! what should be on my bench........probably a 300tdi with a severe case of the runs or the cider apple crusher that i probably should have finished before harvest!!!
  12. tis a joke, all the problems in this world they jail an old lady for not cutting down some tree's........ think they need a taste of reality!!!!
  13. huh, i know its a freebie but they don't offer one for my MS880 with a 48" bar..........had to make do with one for the little husky. Notably they only seem to be offering it for the smaller saws and what look slike to me the homeuser......perhaps they realise a pro can sharpen a saw better than this gadget. But i'll happily give it a go!!!
  14. are you just running the crane from the tractor hydraulics? If so do they run fast enough for you?
  15. see i knew this place would have the answer!!! Can see the logic, guess it's really been superseeded by timber harvesters on machines! Does anyone here use one?
  16. Hi whilst avoiding paperwork this morning i found this on you tube:- [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G80EXLg7DtE&feature=related]Husqvarna 077 Bow Saw - YouTube[/ame] Now can someone please tell me why u'd use one of these? I can't get my head around it at all and i've watched several video's but can't see the point. :confused1:
  17. ah ha i think she's been listening to the tree chappy on radio 2 last week about listening to the noises the tree's make!!! not sure if i can quite believe it is possible actually!
  18. messy workshop is the sign of a genius at work! Well thats my excuse anyway!! Nice trailer!!
  19. here's my 2pennies worth, i agree with all those who've said they're good if u have lots of nice straight cord wood. I built a homemade version for myself, not as complex or quick as a brought one but i soon found once all the straight timber was gone it was as much use as a chocolate teapot in the sahara!! I've since stripped it to pieces and made a quick foot pedal operated vertical splitter, for the small amount we do i've found it much more succesful to run any smaller straight wood through the circular saw and then throught he splitter. or chainsaw and then splitter. I've ended up recently with a load or two of wood from a yard that runs a large processor and any of the timber they can't put through that was gettng dumped over the quarry edge so they now save it and i pick it up FOC. Depends on the situation, i'd love to have a shiny processor and do tons and tons in half the time but i just don't get that kinda timber very often. And there's too much competition in the area from others who do it with processors for it to warrant me getting into firewood in a big way!
  20. i've often thought this would be a good way of making more use of our big tractors in the winter, but unlike chippers there doesn't seem to be any machines out there designed for high productivy of large material that requires a large hp tractor? would like to know if anyone knows of a machine out there? but like farming is going now, alot of people seem to like there independance so are preffering to use there own smaller kit and do it exactly as they want? don't know if this would be similiar in the firewood trade? :confused1:
  21. as a tight farmer i burn anything i find or get offered, long as its well seasoned!!!! softwoods as good as hardwood, agreed u chuck more on but it gives off more heat! Have been known to wear shorts and t-shirt infront the woodburner only to go to bed with ice on the inside of the bedroom window!!!
  22. all i know is i won't be offering to cut it up with my bow saw and split it with a maul!!!!
  23. trust me if i use C4 i'll be filming it!!! And u'll be the first on here to watch it!!! wonder if the local quarry would let me have some........
  24. i do like the sound of the c4 idea, only trouble is u might get some splinters of beech in ur arse as ur running if u get it wrong!!! Thanks though, might try that 2moro if i get round to it!!!
  25. Hi Wondered if anyone had any tips on felling a large beech tree that is hollow. Its about 4'-5' in diameter approx 3' from the ground. Its still alive mostly, but there are some dead branch points left up the top. The tree is in the side of a wood, so direction of fell isn't critical but would obviously be easier if it fell in the field to extract hopefully some spalted timber for sawing and the rest is destined for the good old log burner!!! I would put a pic on here but didn't take one when i was up there, but will try and get one if i can! Many thanks in advance Mike:biggrin:
