  1. I saw a great iPad app today which means you can make it a second screen for your PC or Mac. Not really arb related but I thought it was slick.
  2. I don't think a Rayburn qualifies for RHI payments. I know our Esse doesn't which is a similar device. I think you need a dedicated wood, chip or pellet boiler like and Eco Angus or similar.
  3. What sort of blade do you find best? A tri Blade or a Circular one?
  4. We are looking at a small scale (20-30kw) gasifying boiler for our house which is not massive. Yes, there is work involved but for me that's a lifestyle choice anyway. Not sure I would make the same choice when I'm 70 though. I don't believe maintenence of the smaller setups to be much more than a gas combi. I think you are correct if you make the assumption that you would be buying in seasoned wood. But, if you can produce your own fuel and it's just time (I class this as excersize myself so it saves on Gym fees) and you can qualify for some kind of RHI then I think it's a winner. Maybe only while the RHI runs but maybe in 20 years time PV will have come on and our appliances will be much more efficient?
  5. I reckon an iphone should be good for 2 years really. I had a very old 3G until the 4S came out and it was getting very slow with all the new software but I still got £100 for it on eBay. The batteries can be replaced quite cheaply and easilly despite what people tell you. My bruv put a new battery, back and screen on his 3Gs for a few quid and says it's like a new phone again. Me, I plan to flog my 4S when the 5 comes out. I bought it out-right and am on PAYG with 3 which gives me all I need. I reckon I'll lose £100-150 on the phone over the year and that is a bargain for what it does. Pete, you want to get that to an Apple store as it's knacked. They will most likely give you a new one with no argument. As for HTC / Android phones, I had a good few before switching to the evil that is Apple and got nothing but greif with them. Locking up, crashing, call problems, apps borking the phone and so on and so on. In the end I couldn't take it any more and sold out to the dark side. I'm no Apple fan boy but the simple fact is that iPhones are just brilliant and that's that. If you do get a dud, they will sort it for you. At the moment, nothing comes close.
  6. Hard work with a brush cutter. Harder than you might imagine. Seems to me they dislike shade so my plan with our bramble patch is to mow clearings and put in some poplars which should provide shade in a few years. Then we will put in some slower broad leaves and eventually take out the pops for fuel.
  7. As a guitarist, I can get 11 inches.....
  8. Or Eco Angus. One of the fellas from there has posted here before.
  9. I should say that the tree looks healthy in itself but I have come across quite a few lately of this size which have expired quit quickly.
  10. Hopefully some pics
  11. Pretty much. Yes.
  12. I've got a mature alder in my garden which I a toying with taking down. I've felled a few dead ones of about the same size over the last year or so. The problem I have is that this is an easy fell at the mo but we are thinking of putting a fence under it. I don't want to have to take it down in 5 years with complications under it. So. Is a clump of new shoots from the base a bad sign for the main tree?
  13. We've sold loads of cheap mauls over the years and most of the 'hickory' ones are nothing of the sort. We don't touch them now. Only fibreglass.
  14. My point re gum was in the cutting and snedding as it can be a sticky business. Once dried, the sap becomes rocket fuel. You'll get far less tarring from softwood than hardwood in my experience.
  15. For interweb you either need 3g like a phone or wifi hotspot. Not all iPads have both and I think the ones with 3G are a bit dearer? Maybe you can get like a Mifi or something though which would solve that issue.
  16. Problem with Alder is the bit sticking out of the water, it will rot quite quickly I reckon. The stuff under the surface will still be there in 500 years. Funny old stuff. On the plus side it grows quickly and the piles will be in compression so should last a good few years.
  17. Same question.
  18. Not holding their value though. Bargains galore on eBay. An iPhone will hold it's money better than anything out there. I haven't got a tablet yet and may look at Windows 8 for this but for phones, so far nothing comes close. Android is just a pointless mess so can be discounted. The Lumia is a good try and a decent phone I admit. I have tried one out and it's slim and slick. But it's not quite there. I can totally see the case for buying one. The battery life would be my main concern. My 4s can do 3 days easilly now.
  19. The new Nokia windows phone is slick and looks a bit more rugged than an iPhone but I've heard the battery is pants.
  20. Aberdeen lol. These scammers always choose somewhere likely to be far away from most people to discourage viewing before buying. I doubt they are in Aberdeen at all and and I doubt the vehicle exists.
  21. Thanks. I'll have a look at soilscapes. Might just put some in and see how they go.
  22. Shouldn't do really. Cut it in 1m lengths and split them in half then stack on pallets in a long row with tarp(s) over the top. Lovely firewood by winter 2012. Bit of a messy job snedding it all though. Lots of gum I would guess.
  23. I leave Alder sun shoots wedged under a branch with the ends in the stream for a few weeks. Seems to trigger them off then strip off a bit of bark at the base and just push them in the ground if it's soft enough. 99% success rate with that method.
  24. Sounds dodgy. What is being proposed is called 'escrow' where a third party holds funds until the deal is completed to the satisafction of the buyer. It also gives the seller protection against fake money / fake drafts etc. But, I have never heard of this for eBay motors in the UK.
  25. Any grow it in the South West or have seen it coppiced down here? It seems like a pretty useful wood but I can't see any of it in our woods at all. I'm looking for a fast growing wood I can use in the future for things like fence posts and other structural stuff. We're dominated by Hazel, Syc, Ash and Elm plus a fair bit of Alder.
