  1. Is that in a gravity system? Surely having a return stat could cause the Esse to boil? I'm looking at a Laddomat which works the other way round ie it only starts releasing water from the boiler once it's hot which in turn stops cold water returning. Or does the stat just slow down the flow until the return is hot? I'm interested as a Laddomat is going to be a few hundred plus lots of hassle.
  2. I am a councillor for our parish and we've had quite a lot of complaints recently about people felling or pruning trees on their land without 'permission'. It seems to be getting worse as more solar panels appear. Some of the parish is in a conservation area so that is obviously a problem so that is that. It's not helped by the council's general lack of understanding of the various legal aspects involved with some saying you can't cut or work on any tree down over 6" dia. Some say you can cut soft but no hardwood. Some say oak is protected and so on.So I wanted to clarify some of my understanding of this subect. Which is: 1. There is no restriction on any kind of tree work including felling unless: a)The tree is in a conservation area b)it is protected by a TPO c)work is not being carried to proper health and safety standards d)you are removing more than 5 cube of timber from your land per quarter, in which case you need a felling license. 2. There is no distinction in law between hardwood, softwood or between different species. 3. Work does not HAVE to be carried out by licenced professionals 4. The final responsibility is with the firm or person with the saw, be that the land owner or the contractor. Anyone care to comment on these as I feel it would be good if someone on the council actually new what they were talking about. Is there a good resource which explains the law in simple terms for people like me who get parishoners phoning me up shouting about trees being murdered? We do have a tree warden but he's not very pro-active unfortunately.
  3. Mains hot comes from heat exchanger in the thermal store. The body of the water in the tank flows around the central heating so you keep the store hot all the time. Dhw is created by running mains cold through the heat exchanger inside the tank on demand. Sounds dodgy but it totally works. We had to turn the mixer valve up on ours as it was coming out the tap at 80 degrees. We run a mixer shower off it as well and it's like a power shower and will go way too hot. Ours is a gleddhill torrent heat store hooked up to an esse w23 which is like a Rayburn. The only issue we have is when the tank gets cold it drags on the stove and gums it up. Going to fit a laddomat this summer to solve that.
  4. I assume you mean the sort of Clarke / draper / einhell type machines? 2 kw / 4 ton or so. Or the bottle jack based ones. Either will work ok but to be honest it's slow going compared to a maul. I have a little clarke logbuster 7 and it's a good machine but I only use it to take care of the knotty stuff.
  5. You can only burn tyres after dark I think.
  6. 5 year willow should be logs really unless there is a problem with it or it's a very slow growing variety.

    ash ?

Got any pics of bark / split logs?
  8. My dad got told he couldn't fill up a green 20l metal jerry can with unleaded in a Morrisons station. Had to be green plastic. I believe red was for leaded? I just go to my local station where you could top up an old pair of wellies and they wouldn't care as long as your cash was good.

    bulk bag

We do 90 x 90 x 80 I think at about £5.50 plus VAT. Rated at 1000kg. Not sure if that is cheap or not. You might be able to source second use ones cheaper or something.
  10. I used to beat and pick up on the Waddeton estate for Lord Clifford. Falling timber was the last of our worries. It was after lunch and 'refreshments' you had to be careful. I got shot twice in the same year. Luckily from a good distance but still have a scar on one finger. The other one I turned away and ducked and it knocked me clean over. Good old Barbour took most of the flak. I think in the end they flattened the whole thing and planted connifers all over it.
  11. Big enough to log up?
  12. I stopped listening to new bands around the mid 80's. It's got worse from there and is now pretty much pointless as far as I can see. I'm sure there are a good few talented bands around but I can't be bothered. So much from the 70's which I keep finding. Real bands with real sideburns and real guitars.
  13. It's the pics I'm struggling with. Got loads on the phone but most won't upload. Maybe they are too big or something.
  14. No, it's a private garden and I have no connection with the arb trade other than owning some woodland which I mess around in. I'll have a ring around and see if anyone can come and have a look.
  15. Hmm. Came out the wrong way. Here's hopefully a couple more, also the wrong way.
  16. This branch is the one which worries me most.
  17. We're selling 25 acres at the moment in 4 lots and have been advised to start at £10k per acre but the sky is the limit. So far it's not even on the market and we have 3 neighbours desperate to buy it. it's steep too and only fit for grazing but it does have a stream right through it.
  18. Is that in some kind of commercial boiler or a DIY job? I always wonder how much energy I'm losing when I burn up stacks of brash on site.
  19. I though it was all about stratification or some such? I'm looking at a Laddomat as well but apparently they need to be near the stove which may cause us some problems with pipe runs. Also they need a short run to the tank and ours may be marginal I think.
  20. I've just been looking at the installation done on our tank and I'm thinking our plumber has got it wrong based on something Catweazel said earlier. This is our tank (picture on page 7) http://www.plumbnation.co.uk/site/gledhill-torrent-re-solar-vented-mains-pressure-foam-lagged-copper-thermal-store-cylinder/gledhill-torrent-re-solar-installation-guide.pdf He has connected the return to the stove correctly (bottom 28mm connection) but he connected the hot flow from the Esse to the 28mm boiler return half way up the tank, not the one at the top marked 28mm alternative energy flow. So the hot flow from the Esse is going in halfway up the tank, not into the top. Anyone think this might be a problem? I'm pretty hacked off with the job they did really. I don't think the flue they did for the Esse is good either (too much enamel and not enough SS and I can't sweep it without getting on the roof). Plus he bodged the boiler connections on the tank.
  21. I agree, Alder is a very fast seasoning hardwood. Needs some sun and a good breeze and will dry in no time. I like to cut it into longer, thinner logs if possible. I coppiced some last year and really pleased with the re-growth so far.
  22. Couple hours surely.
  23. What are Clegs? Are they the scottish equivalent of chavs?
