  1. I had about 10 cube split a few years ago and left it out over summer. It was bone dry but unfotnunately I didn't get it in before the weather turned and a couple days rain on it, it was soaked right through again. It must be kept in a shed once dried. Good firewood though.
  2. Sycamore is maybe the future for the wood fuel industry I think. As a crop I mean.
  3. I agree, £70 seems fair for that lot.
  4. If it's in a wood then fell it and any collateral is just more firewood.
  5. Is it because you lied when you were 17?
  6. I sometimes think I'm too cautious with my kids and don't let them run free enough but my god. It's a balancing act I guess. When we were kids on the farm we would ride back to the farm on top of a trailer full of square bales with it rocking all over the place and us hanging on and laughing. All kinds of dangerous stuff we used to get up to but we loved it. I wouldn't let me kids do half of it. I don't know. I guess all we can say is that poor kid and his poor Dad. It's easy to condemn but we don't know the full truth. Whatever, that families world has changed forever. Tragic.
  7. Look at the work as excersize. That's what I do. It's good for humans to do a bit of graft, especially if you work mainly indoors as I do. Get stuck in and enjoy it.
  8. Still a well put together little saw wherever it came from.
  9. I still have my 136. It was my first saw and provided me with at least 10 years worth of logs for the fire. It's a bit knacked now but I'm thinking of getting it sorted out. I'm amazed how stiff the kick bar is compared to my new Husky but it still cuts well. I think I will get it done up for sentimental reasons. If I were you I would keep your Dad's saw and make good use of it. It may be a 'garden saw' but it'll do some serious work and go through bigger stuff than it should. A good solid model in the Husky history I think.
  10. Me too actually. Couple rashers left I think.
  11. I used to get migraines real bad. Starting with the funny vision thing. Usually when reading you suddenly realise bits of the page are not there any more. Later on I got to know that this was the moment to lock myself in a dark room and try to sleep. Fighting it was no good for me. Ended with crushing headache and vommiting. Don't seem to get them any more. Just a thought, but you are expecting a baby soon and that is a massive thing. Is this a bit of pressure that maybe you are not even aware of expressing itself in an odd way? I know when we were expecting our first I was fine for ages. Plenty of slaps on the back and new dady stuff. Then I fell to pieces with it all and broke down one evening. This was before the birth. Ended up sobbing like a big girl. It was just too much to take on board for my tiny feeble brain. Becoming a daddy is a massive thing and it can express itself in odd ways. Especially if, like me, your emotional vocabularly consists only of the words 'BACON BUTTIE'. Anyway, wishing you all the best. You are in the right place, grim though it may be for the moment.
  12. Not had any problems on 3 with iphone 4s. Probly just a time out issue throwing an innacurate error.
  13. Not sure about that. City Link charge us £9.99 to send a 5kg bag to anywhere in Europe (with a few exceptions like Italy) but even places like Bulgria and so on. Try sending the same thing north of Moray and they want £15 off us.
  14. Some couriers draw the line lower than others. Some have blanket postcode restricitions and some don't but the website software of the seller isn't sophisticated enough to sort it all out, or the seller hasn't had time to input all the sub codes (AB1, AB2, AB3) and tell it which ones cost and which ones don't. For instance, if you sell on eBay and block any offshore or highland buyers because the item is really heavy then you end up blocking people in Portsmouth etc.
  15. Isuzu or Toyota would be my recomendation. I love Landies but I've had about 6 and can never quite bring myself to buy another. I like the old shape Isuzu king cab, good sturdy and capable motor. Probably run on veg oil as well.
  16. Fair enough. A lot of stores don't show delivery up front and wait until you get to the checkout.
  17. You can send up to 20kg first class packet post. 5kg costs about £8 and then £1.20 per kilo up to 20. So it can be a cheaper option than couriers who usually come it at around £12-15 to offshore and isles for contract customers. We use city link who are as good as any of them we find. Plus they take heavy stuff and we sell a lot of heavier tools etc. We have some clever software in our store which can work out all the shipping based on weight cost and area.
  18. Most couriers do surcharge heavily for the highlands and it's no good saying this or that service is the same price if that company doesn't use that service. The reply you got was below par and without making excuses, you would be amazed at how many rude, aggressive and cheeky emails you get when you sell online. I've been threatened with violence twice in the last Month. We are constantly being asked to give huge discounts and many people seem to think that online sellers should not be trying to make a profit at all. I'm not saying that you were anything but polite in your enquiry but it takes some skill to endure a poostorm of angry emails and maintain a polite demeanour. This person maybe hasn't acquired that skill as yet. What was the wording of your enquiry? Many emails we get say something like 'free postage over £100?' and you kind of think if you can't be bothered asking a polite question.......
  19. So is this just because he pulled the saw too soon? It looks that way to be honest.
  20. So what is that tree? Sycamore, Ash or mature Hazel? I think it's Syc. Any other votes? Alder can behave like that quite often but it's not an Alder tree I don't think.
  21. Ridiculous situation today. Taking down some overgrown hedgerow syc. Large clumps of 12"+ stuff. Took down a load and had one big tree left, surrounded by stumps. I'm up on the hedge and it's straight up so I think it can go either way. Put in the cuts and feel the weight coming back so use some wedges. I have 2 planned escape routes at this point if it goes wrong. One is under the tree if it starts coming back at me and the other is down the hedge, hanging onto a stump and protected if it looks like it's going to jump about. We have a rope and the Hilux out in the field to pull it the way we want. So I drive in the wedges and give it the final zing with the saw and remove. At this point I plan to get well clear and instruct driver to pull but he's already off. Then it becomes surreal. The tree jumps off it's hinge onto a lower stump. I'm already halfway down the hedge in escape route 2. The tree starts to spin. I swear it went around 3 times on it's newly adopted stump. It was like slow motion and I'm under it watching it like a rabbit in the headlights. I'm wondering whether to sit tight in my semi protected position or just plain leg it. I stay put. Should have legged it. The tree stops spinning and stands there. At this point I leg it, I even left my beloved Husky. Hilux driver is out of the cab, standing with his gob open. The tension on the rope is keeping it upright and it just stands there. Never seen anything like it. In the end we just tug it over and some words are spoken. Note to self: decide who is in charge and who gives the orders in future.
  22. Maybe it's down to species.
  23. I like the way he starts running when it's all over.
  24. A bit off topic but any tips on transferring cherry or taking cuttings? We have a stand of very attractive trees on a bit of land we are selling. It is seeding itself and expanding nicely and I would like to get some of these trees onto land we are keeping. Anyone know the process for taking cuttings / seeding? Problem is I don't have long to do it so it may be better to try and transplant some of the small trees. On topic, it's a smashing firewood and very attractive in the hearth as well as it's a nice clean wood usually.
  25. Air play or similar I think. Google use iPad as second monitor.
