  1. It's getting a bit late on but not too late I would say this year. Ours are just starting to bud so marginal but should be OK.
  2. Bleedy iphone. Sorry, did take more photos but for some reason they won't load up. Will try again tomorrow when sober.
  3. Bugger. Will get back with shots when I can.
  4. Thanks Rob. I think I will get someone to look at it. A few hundred vs my kid's safety is a no brainer.
  5. PS: Should those beeches come out? My dad says they should but I think the combination of leaves is very attractive and they don't seem to be adversely affecting the oak.
  6. Trees- no fungus as far as I can other than the usual lichen we get on Oaks down here. Some of the branches are reaching far out over the lawn, especially the big one on the lower left and that one coming down would destroy anything under it. The lowest one on the right pointing back to the field and the smaller one opposite drooping right down to the ground are rotten and will come of shortly.
  7. There are some beeches growing up through it. I wonder if they are catching on it.
  8. I've got a big old oak in my garden and it's started making odd cracking noises. Like a creak but louder and deeper. Quite disconcerting as my kids play under it. There is some dead wood I plan to take off ASAP. But it has some big branches sticking out and one of them falling would be serious. Anyone heard this kind of noise before? I wonder if a limb is about to fail. Need a good windy night!
  9. Saturday night fever probably. I imagine the perp is currently nursing a sore head.
  10. Hi Adam. Do you know joe and Glenn? In the same line as you.
  11. Thanks will check it out
  12. I'm just wondering whether selective removal of good size wood every year may gently bring it into long term coppice survival. I have felled a lot of mature alder trees and so far had about 50% success rate with coppice. Some thrive and coppice immediately. Some just seem to die. The bonus with Alder is that it's really easy to cut a few shoots and stick it in the ground and hey presto, new tree.
  13. Can't you just triangulate it from the position of 2 sheep? That's how we navigate on Dartmoor. Takes human error out of the equation.
  14. Serious question. Makita are a pro brand so why do we all use husky and Stihl? I never even looked at a Makita when I last wanted a saw. Or have I got it wrong? Are there more Makita saws out there than I think?
  15. A quick question to the coppice experts out there. I fell an alder at the bottom of my garden about 4 years ago. The stump has coppiced well but only one of the shoots has really reached firewood size. I chopped this off today and got 4 nice 4' lengths of wood out of it. The rest of the shoots are smaller and not firewood size. I'm guessing as it was a big tree, it's had a bit of a shock and may take some time to settle down. Should I remove all the growth now and let it all start again or is it ok to remove the big stuff on its own? I worry that another hard removal might be too much for it to handle.
  16. Hardwood planks can make good money on eBay in small qty's. Course, you have to ship them and stuff but I've seen a few sellers achieving good returns on there.
  17. It will be in the minutes.
  18. Woudn't that size of timber be far more valuable for veneer or milled? Unless it's got some defects or whatever.
  19. I asked the missus last night if she wanted me to light the fire for the first time so I guess it's on the way out. Having said that, we will keep the Esse running 24/7 right up to April so there should be a few people out there wanting wood I guess. Some people run Rayburn/ Esse type stoves running all year round. It would be unbearable in our super insulated house but in our old cottage, the Aga was on all the time, summer and winter. At least you guys who have excess stock will have some really premium dry stuff for next year!
  20. Isn't a 5ft connifer gardening rather than arb? I assume we are talking 5ft high? Or 5ft diameter? We did half an acre of 6ft connifers the other day in about an hour. Pallet forks on the bobcat pushed to the middle and somebody chucking on the fire, roots and all. Great fun.
  21. Don't under-estimate your costs. Take it ALL into account and write it down. You might be suprised how many loads you have to deliver before you are into profit per week. Don't buy flashy equipment and get into debt using the excuse that the business needs it. Some equipment of course is required and good equipment can make a business more profitable but many first time business owners go and splash the cash on every gizmo going. I've seen it time and again and they spend the next 2 years paying it all off. Don't under-price just to get sales. Your competition will do the same to get them back. Then you have to cut again. Race to the bottom. No profit for anybody. Only supply a product you would be happy with yourself. Don't try to cut corners, be honest with your customers. Make it clear what you are providing and at what cost. Smile when you deliver, even if you're having a naff day.
  22. Drawing a blank I'm afraid. Wonder if it was a classified ad.
  23. Any chance you can ask your lead how he saw it? Was he browsing categories or was it a search? If so, any search terms etc. I can search through deleted listings as well and at least see the image they used and get an item number.
