  1. You should realise that a washing machine is usually a consumer purchase. A saw sold to an arb business is not. It's B2B and there are no such protections. In B2B the terms are set up in the contract and your recourse is court if the supplier does not come up to your expectations. Of course, most suppliers will want to help you out and get it sorted but beware of confusing consumer rights with business purchases.
  2. I saw them for sale at the Eden project last year in the gift shop! Very eco freindly guys. I did email them to point out the damage they can do but got no reply. I wonder if they still sell them?
  3. We found in our Esse that one bad load of logs can bork it in one go. I got desperate once and burnt some damp oak in it. Spent the next afternoon clearing it out. It will cope with the sort of dry powdery soot you get from soft wood but if you burn wet hardwood, it jsut gums up and is unusable immediately. Very fussy on wood but if you get the right stuff in it, it's a dream.
  4. Where's the best place to get vented bags? We've had a massive clear up of rivers and overstood coppice this winter and have hazel, alder and ash all over the place. Probably about 5 years worth for us and I don't want to handle it twice so I'm thinking split on site and chuck into vented bags on the hilux then unload with bobcat back at the farm.
  5. Had this conversation today with my brother while clearing fallen Alder from a stream. My family and everyone I know are Stihl. So, by default, I'm Husky. Stihl, seems to be losing something recently whereas Huskys are getting better and better. It does help that my dad insist on using 25-1 in his saws regardless so his Stihl runs like a pig and smokes like Churchill.
  6. I've never pushed my battery to be honest so I don't know how long it would last. The could times I have forgotten to put in on the dock at night, I have used it all the next day and it's still going strong. No idea how long before it finally died. Re. Blackberries. I've spoken to several owners and the reason they chose a Blackberry over an iphone was that it could do email. Er........
  7. I read that wood dries along the grain ie. the moisture exits at the ends of the log. Does moisture pass horizontally through the wood? Or is it just that you have more warmth getting in there to drive the moisture out?
  8. I suppose the conclusion of this is that if you are an Apple hater you are as bad as an Apple fan boy. I'm neither. It's just the best phone out there right now. I would have no hesitation in buying another brand if it was better or more suited to me.
  9. I don't expect anyone to be impressed because I have an iphone 4s. Outwardly, it could be a 2 year old iphone 4. My battery lasts 2 full days easilly, with lots of use. As it is, I also use it as an alarm clock and have a dock by the bed which charges it up anyway. I use it as a satnav in the car using Skobbler which cost a couple quid and it's as good as any Tom Tom. I use it to play music. I use it as a still and video camera when we are out with the kids and it's as good as the £200 Sony camera we have. I have a tree ID app which gives me hours of fun in the woods and teaches me a lot. It has Siri which makes you look a bit of a dork but is pretty handy when no-one is watching! I have a TV guide app which is far quicker than the one on the TV. An ebay app which means I can bid wherever I am. It has games which the kids love. The other day I was in the co-op carpark while the missus was doing a bit of shopping and our littles one kicked off. I was able to show him a full episode of teletubbies on the iphone and he loved it. That's just scratching the surface as far as uses go. Now, I'm sure most of this can be done with an Android phone for half the money but the fact is that I have had about 5 of them and they are so frustrating and buggy it's a waste of time. I would go for a whole day with my Nexus 1 and think things had been quiet only to find it had siezed up at 10am. The point about Apple stores is very true. Any problem, they sort it, usually just give you a new one there and then. You get that with a Samsung Galaxy? Nope. Last point is resale value. There is MINIMAL depreciation on these phones. Android phones fall off a cliff. I paid £500 for my 4s outright and use it PAYG with 3. I fully expect to get £350-400 for it when the iphone 5 or whatever it's called comes out. Pay £500 for an Android phone and you'll be lucky to see £200 in a years time.
  10. Very good points. I have an iphone 4s now and I love it. I'm not Apple fanboy and have no experience of Macs etc. other than a guy who works for me has one. But, the iphone is simply far better than any android phone I have ever owned / used and I have had a few of them. I found them unstable, buggy and unreliable. You would download an app and it would kill the phone or make it unstable in some way. The thing is with iphones is that they just work. Sounds simple but it's incredible how many products dont these days. Plus the build quality is clearly excellent and not only that, they hold their value as well. Far better than an android device.
  11. I see what you mean. I thought you meant a pump outside the charging loop.
  12. Semtex for the leaning tree.
  13. Must be repeated late night/ early morning / Beeb 3 or something isn't it?
  14. Nice patterns in the flower pot though mate. You'll probably get work just on that.
  15. The council have been doing a lot of thinning down the A38 from Exeter to Plymouth and have stacked all the billets in nice piles, I guess for ecological value. I've since had at least 6 people comment on it and mention 'free firewood' as it's all just off A and B roads on the banks. I've been firm with them but I can see a lot of it dissapearing over the next few months. Sign of the times I guess.
  16. Not sure that makes any sense actually but I'm mid way through number 2 out of 3 for a tenner so it'll have to wait.
  17. What would the second pump do though? I gather that the pump in the Laddomat simply circulates the mini circuit rather than pumping water up to the tank. Maybe I got that bit wrong. The way I see it is that the tank return is blanked off when the boiler is cold so the pump just circulates water from the bolier. When this is hot enough it starts to add cold return to it which in turn, draws hot water from the 't' above the laddomat up into the tank. This continues until the return is hot at which point it just circulates the gravity system. Should the return go cold, the Laddomat restricts the return and keeps heat in the mini circuit. Likewise, when the fire goes out, the flue stat shuts off the pump which stops the whole system from running.
  18. That Cherry looked sweet after they had reduced it. As for no PPE, that bloke up the tree with a bow saw had a Hi viz on. Any more is political correctness gone mad.
  19. Problem is our parish is split over 2 villages and both tree wardens are in our village. The concerned councillor is from the other village and he is concerned about the changes going on, specifically with 2 felled Old Monterey pines and a heavilly pruned Beech which I don't believe are in conservation areas. Both were done for reasons of light to PV panels. He wants a tree warden in their village which is fair enough. He won't do it himself though..... The problem I'm getting is there is so much BS spouted about trees from councillors who should know better than to mouth off before doing their research that the meetings are being ruined in my view. I think inviting our tree officer is a good idea and I will do so next time I see him at the Church House. The point re. felling trees in case a TPO is placed is very interesting. I hadn't considered that before. You can see the logic from the home owner in some ways.
  20. I'm just a bit concerned about the pipe length to tank as the Laddomat manual seems fussy on this. It's 28mm and goes about 2m up a wall, turns to horizontal and goes another 2m to the base of the tank where it has to turn again. How long is your pipe run from Laddomat to pump? Luckilly behind the Esse is the stairs so we can go straight through the wall and into the space under the staircase to site the Laddomat and then up from there.
  21. Well I did mention this to the councillor who raised the issue. He was concerned as well so I told him to make a list of all trees he considered should be protected and get TPO's on them, either himself or the tree's neighbours.
  22. Thanks for all your comments. Can't wait till the next meeting now!
  23. Talking rubbish is his speciality I think.
  24. OK, thanks. That's what I thought but I was told quite sternly by an experienced councillor that you are 'not allowed to cut trees down full stop'!
  25. What about the point re. trees in conservation areas but on private land? I take it these are protected as well? Aside from that we are saying that if someone bought a house with a 150 year old beech in the garden and started taking chunks out of it or felled it completely and it was not TPO or in a conservation area, then there is very little anyone can do? I believe that another thing to consider is if there any clauses in the planning for a development regarding trees within it.
