  1. Pretty sure its chamaecyparis.
  2. I'm sure Karl Urban was wearing them in the new Judge Dredd film?
  3. Ok for the money I spose, but my old cofra boots were awful, they were like sponges, feet were often soaked wet through on many occasions. Since I've tried Meindl Airstreams I won't be wearing anything else, well worth the extra money if you ask me.
  4. I did the RFS online before I had acquired any experience in the industry, I was driven by the fact that I needed to get out of my old job badly. Managed to pass with a merit...best thing I did too, set me right up. Its true that you need discipline, but if the subject interests you and you really want it you'll find the time. And I'm loving being an arborist now, best job in the world.
  5. 'Rigga', or 'Butch' if hes a big dog.
  6. Also try MAGIC for maps with 'rural designations', 'habitat inventories' and such like.
  7. Theres a pretty good template in this document mate: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/guidancenote12.pdf/$file/guidancenote12.pdf You're doing this for the online FdSc with Myerscough aren't you? Us full-timers did this before christmas. The more maps the better, got to; digimap, edina, cranfield soil resources to name a few, pretty good e-maps there.
  8. The missus and I have just bought a 4m bell tent and 5kw woodburner, spent this Christmas in it...was toasty. Lovely waking up hearing the birds.

  15. In additional to the great advice already given... If you havent' got a long additional strop like Caledonian Bob then it's often handy to haul up the end of your line and tie another basic climbing system with either a prusik or blakes, etc. This can then be thrown over a branch more directly above you and the branch you're walking on, having these two separate anchor points in different parts of the crown will give you much more stability and give you more confidence. It can be time consuming but can really save the day when you've got a bit of disco leg on a branch that isn't too friendly. Additionaly, re-directs are a cheap addition to your kit that can also be useful from time to time during tricky branchwalks, they're quick to install too: http://www.rescueresponse.com/store/media/newsletter/techtips/redirects1a.jpg courtesy of the 'Tree Climbers Companion'. Good luck, Tom
  16. Hi Rob,

Hows it going? Just wandering if you have much experience doing tree reports? The reason I ask is that a friend/on-off colleague of mine (a tree surgeon) is having difficulties in finalising one. He asked me if I knew anyone in the north west who might be able to help him (paid of course). He is based in west Manchester. I'm aware that you know your shizzle and have either finished or nearly finished your FdSc, so I thought that I'd see if you were interested? Let me know if you are interested and I'll give you his number, he would be glad to discuss it with you further if you think it's something that you could help with. I'm still in Surrey so I can't take on the task myself unfortunately.

Let us know what you think.

    Cheers,

    Tom

  17. TOP TIP: Use denture cleaning tablets to clean out your drinks bottles, work perfectly and cost a fraction of the Camelbak/Sigg bottle cleaning tablets. They're normally only about a quid for 30-odd.
  18. I'm a dab-hand with a set of crayons and some paper.
  19. Save a few bob and check out military surplus stores for secondhand rucksack/kit bags (min 65lt I'd say) instead of the Stein bag.
  20. Fagus sylvatica 'Asplenifolia', one of my faves.
