  1. Why don't you post a video and show us how it's done??
  2. Hmm yea, it does look a bit strange. My mate took it with my camera set on manual, but just pointed it and shot. I think the houses behind make it look a larger tree, and therefore maybe I look bigger. The houses are a fair distance away though. I should be in scale with the tree which was only small..
  3. Wow. What is going on there?? Someone please explain to me how stuff like that happens?
  4. You say that, but in the wild trees, there is a story mentioned of a guy who fell from a huge height, cant remember exactly, but fell into pine needle rich spongy soil. F'd himself up a bit but survived.. This is one of my fav pics of me free climbing.
  5. Looks tidy mate! I used to have mine round the back like that but I got pissed off with it being such a reach. Now have it right on my hip, just behind the D. I don't have a saw hanging next to it to contend with though!
  6. Every now and again, but not in really massive trees. I start to loose my nerve a bit over around 20m not roped in. But before I climbed with ropes I had much less fear for it.
  7. Not every single track closed has houses along it now though. My point more than anything is why not spend money improving the track we already have!!
  8. I personally think the trains are not a bad idea. BUT.. They should spend money improving the current network, rather than damaging ancient woodlands (in the international year of forests hahah the irony:lol:) by building new parts to the network! All of the old lines and stations shut down years ago could quite easily be re-opened with a bit of effort. If your local station was closer you may be more inclined to leave the car at home..If the ticket prices were reasonable:sneaky2: Then there would be no damage to the ancient woodlands. Where is this money coming from anyway?? I find it all a bit depressing..
  9. I found blaze pretty easy tbh. 5m blaze double ended spliced lanyard for me. Stopper knot getting stuck in a crotch.. No thanks.
  10. What a joke! Who uses trains anyway? They are an overpriced waste of space.
  11. Classic. Some woman came up to me in the woods the other day screaming "oh my god" at her husband! hahaha I bombed it out of the tree really fast and looked at her and said "are you alright, I heard you screaming" hahah:laugh1: Why, if I was going to hang myself would I go to such effort with so much jangly kit?!?
  12. I'm sure any letter, regardless of the wording/grammar/spelling is a good thing. Shows that you support this and are willing to put in the effort to write a letter rather than just signing up with your email address in one click. Shows that we care.
  13. Would a letter saying something like this be good enough? : " To who it may concern, The skills made available, through the charitable organisation proposed by Tony Croft, are essential in facilitating the development of the knowledge required to become a better Arborist. For all those involved in Arboriculture, this would be a fantastic resource. This project has my full support. Yours sincerely, Ben Rose."
  14. Just to clarify, the thing he uses to choke the line is a multisling. The ring loop goes on about the friction hitch to add friction to allow single line descent and re-ascent using 3;1 mechanical advantage. So you could still use the running bowline and a long tail to choke. It just isn't as easily adjustable that way. I like the idea of being cinched on the spar rather than just having my rope looped round it.
  15. Haha. Don't blame you. But if we all bury our heads in the sand over issues they never get sorted..
  16. Thanks for the input Paul, It is always useful to see both ends of the arguement. But you can't CE a knot can you? And in a way, although it does not alter the structure of the rope, it does change the characteristics of the rope as a result of the bend radius etc.. It just irritates me when something that can do the job better than a knot is made to seem less suitable as a result of paper-pushing litigation and jargon. I'm lucky to not have to comply with any of that! ...YET.
  17. So is there definitive proof that a factory made splice is stronger than a hand made splice? A hand splice is stronger than any knot, So it is sufficiently strong and suitable for the task, assuming it is made correctly. I personally think that a qualification in splicing would solve a lot of issues. Once a splice is made correctly it is impossible to make it go wrong bar cutting it. Every time a knot is tied there is some amount of variation involved. Yet it is perfectly acceptable to use a knot. Go figure...
  18. Cheers Judge. Just wondered if any splicers out there would be prepared to do some sort of splicing symposium/group thing like they are doing in the states at the moment. We need to get together and force the legislators to sort all of the jargon around splicing out!
  19. BUMP, Could any magic Mods that may potentially see this change the title to Splicing Competence please? It might attract a few more of the splicing types.. I really should have thought about this at the time. Ah well.
  20. Brilliant film and so true..
  21. Tbh I don't really know what legislation it comes under and that is not what I am asking about. My question is: Are we any closer to having some sort of NPTC unit or other test that shows competency for splicing so that there is a clear standard to meet?
  22. Without getting into the debate around hand splicing and all of the legislation. I have a one question that I am hoping someone can shed some light on. Are we any closer to having some sort of NPTC unit or other test that shows competency for splicing so that there is a clear standard to meet?
  23. I do the same sort of thing, but my bag is a rock climbing chalk bag that has a draw string on top. I stuff the lanyard in but tie a slipknot that goes in the bag too. The drawstring and the slip knot inside stop the excess being pulled out. If I need more line, just loosen the drawstring and the pulley pulls the slipknot out. Can re-stuff it really quickly by winding the excess in a figure of 8 pattern round my thumb and pinky. I also spliced the other end of my blaze lanyard (after milking it) so I dont need a stopper knot as the friction hitch jams on it. No jamming in crotches:biggrin:
