  1. I have a Trewhella Monkey winch that is so heavy its yet to leave the workshop. They used these to clear large trees for building works. In the manual it shows pictures of it winching trees over that have a decent size log in front of them so the root plate ends up sticking in the air. This makes it ideal for using it in remote places where they might not have access to large plant for the removal of the stumps as well. I would imagine digging around the roots as well and severing them with an axe would assist in pulling the trees over more quickly. Severing them with a chainsaw would be a bit quicker and if you didnt have to dig around the roots at all it would be a lot faster still. Just my thoughts on it. Ebay regularly has monkey winches up for sale (and has one now, but its not mine!) so you can have a look at one if you dont know what it looks like.
  2. I've had my alaskan mill for about 15 years or so and its done a serious amount of logs in that time. I might get one in a couple of months time for my 88 to give it a try out. Be interesting to compare them side by side and see if the copy lives up to the build quality of the original. One thing I would start off with is replacing all the thumscrews with lock nuts. Due to the vibration they will soon work their way loose and get lost in the dust. Mike
  3. The local cycle racing club practice near where I live and on the industrial estate where I have my workshop. They cycle 6 abreast and more in the pitch black at high speed. Almost impossible to see most times till they are on top of you. What makes them think they are exempt from the law I dont know, but I am still amazed there hasnt been a lorry or something drive right into a big bunch of them!
  4. No sour grapes at all. Why should they use public money to assist a private residence. Should have claimed on his insurance and if he couldnt get any, that would have just put him in the same position as many other people. Hope the council pursue him for the money they have spent out.
  5. The furthest I have travelled was 460 miles away to pick up a cnc router I won on ebay. It was from a dealer and he was happy to put it on a pallet and ship it. I didnt want it shipped and was happy to pay cash when I picked it up. It came out of a school and was almost brand new. Absolute bargain and a cracking machine to use.
  6. The thickness of the aluminium extrusion rails is 2.1mm thick on my alaskan. This might be an odd metric equivalent of an imperial size. What is the thickness on the Chinese copy?
  7. When someone gets one, it would be good to get a thickness measurement of the rails to compare it with the original. I will measure mine tomorrow and post it up.
  8. You could always light your house and garden up like theBlackpool illuminations. Thats what my wife and kids do, the difference is I have to pay for it all!
  9. The main difficulty is making sure you have clearance at both sides of the log so you are not cutting into dirt etc. I normally wait till I am down to the last couple of planks and I will then raise the log up on a couple of smaller logs. There is also the balance aspect of cutting an 18" dia log with a 48" bar. There is a lot of protusion on the rhs. I think it also looks a bit silly as well but thats only my opinion:001_tongue:
  10. Navitron is one company who sell a variety of renewable energy systems. They also have a very good forum as well.
  11. Remember it all like it was yesterday. Gave everyone a good laugh as well. Another Tory caught with his trousers around his ankles:biggrin:
  12. If you are using any sort of wooden panels on the inside you will have to waterproof them. Acidic moisture and heat will destroy any panel product quite quickly, probably even marine plywood which would last just a bit longer. The yanks paint the insides of their kilns with aluminium roofing paint. I went down the fibreglassing route with mine as I didnt want to be doing it every couple of years. I run my kiln about 5 times a year which would equate to about 6 months of heat and moisture. Thats a lot of time for the moisture to be attacking the insides and slowly eating them away. I have a sauno kilnand they recommend builing a kiln structure from insulated panels. I did this the first time (as I didnt know any better!). It didnt last too long as any wee nudge of the panels when putting in or taking out the timber caused a puncture in the side walls allowing moisture penetration. Didnt take long for it to distintegrate. The other way to do it is to look for a specialist breakers yard who may be doing aluminium bodies from vans. Waterproof, rustproof and with a door seal to die for! On some of the yank sites they have guys who have 40' aluminium shipping containers with railway tracks going right inside them. This is timber drying at the top end but there isnt any harm in downsizing to suit your own needs. Mike
  13. That looks like a few breeches of some patents there. Next time I am taking back or picking up my daughter from uni in Aberdeen I might take an extra wee trip to see them.
  14. I am in Scotland so I dont think that we have that law up here. The only time I have been stopped for noise was when they were filming Cash in Your Attic at a local 5 star hotel. They played back the filming and you could hear my chainsaw vaguely in the background. They sent someone out to ask me to stop. I was happy to oblige as I was getting about 50 tons of logs for free from the hotel as they had a load of trees felled for an extension. They had to reshoot quite a lot of the programme because of me!
  15. How about using doug fir for a frame and sterling board for the sheathing. I then used fibreglass on top of plywood for the inside to waterproof it. You could always waterproof the outside of it with fibreglass as well
  16. Funny thing is, I have been in this park a few times and nothing like this has ever happened. Even stranger is that two coppers came out within half an hour of being phoned!
  17. Hi Steve I dont think we looked 'furtive or shady' We didnt look anything different from the local council tree squad. What I forgot to say is we often get people out dog walking or passing by asking questions. I am only too happy to answer their questions and I have yet to meet any hostile people out there. Plenty of nutters as well. Even the tree huggers are happy that the trees are getting used and will go on for many years instead of rotting away. Maybe some people are just like that, with nothing to do!
  18. I was milling a beech today in a public park with the council's permission including a letter stating that. I had my barrier tape up, signs posted and was doing everything legit such a PPE. About 2 oclock a woman and her husband came up to the barrier tape and started taking photos. As I was on the saw my mate told me this when I had finished the plank. He also told me that he saw the man on his phone as well and we had a laugh about him phoning the police. About half an hour later two coppers turned up and started questioning me about what we were doing there and had we got permission. I pulled out my letter from the council and showed it to them and they were happy with that. As per usual they took my name and address etc even when I hadnt commited a crime. I did ask them though if I could make a complaint against them for breaching my privacy under human rights legislation and they agreed I could! I wont be doing that as I am not an arse!
  19. Looking forward to seeing a photo when its put up Eggs Mike
  20. when I go onto Arbchat, it comes up with error 2046. Dont know why but I have been able to access it during previous raffles. Any ideas?
  21. Google their chief executive's name and email address. Send them a totally shitty email explaining your problem and that you will hold him personally responsible for getting it sorted out asap. He wont, but he will delegate it to a senior person in the company to sort. I did this recently with Samsung over a repair issue with my daughter's mobile and we had it fixed pretty quickly and returned. I think I decribed their level of service as "barely reaching the dizzy heights of shambolic and was an absolute disgrace for a company whose main business is in communications". Try it and see how it goes.
  22. Bit of snow now up here in Fife. Didnt think it was that cold as its been a lovely dry day in the main for a change
  23. Last Christmas my rhubarb was doing really well, plenty big leaves, after I moved it into a better area in the garden. Its only just started to sprout this year but its still 3 months ahead of schedule. We are 15 miles north of Edinburgh by the way.
  24. I imported my x27 from Poland about 4 years ago and use it for all my workshop firewood chopping. In that time I have only used a flat file to sharpen it. I have several flat files but often use my stihl flat file which is ideal.
  25. I am quite lucky where I live as I am only an hour and a half's drive from Glenshee and can nip up there quite easily. Never been abroad skiing before as my wife doesnt ski as she has arthritis and the cold would kill her. I just ski midweek and avoid the weekenders who clog up the place.
