  1. What’s the delivery process like? I am hoping to move house shortly to a place with a bigger back garden - would love a container which I’d then clad, insulate and put a pitched roof on as a more secure workshop. Only a 20’ one max, but the access is probably only good to get a six wheeler to within about 30 foot of where the container would need to go, from where it’d need to be craned in. Sounds expensive, I think :-(
  2. And they’ve got a tenner off at the moment, so less than £40 including bar and chain.
  3. Depends how much you want to lay out but I’ve had one of the Titan electric saws from Screwfix and other than the oiler being a bit over-frugal I’m happy with the amount of work it gets through.
  4. Auto for on-road use, definitely. I also had an Isuzu Trooper years ago that had auto box but with separate selectable transfer box, that combination was ideal (but drank like a fish).
  5. Oooh, ya f*^%er!! Rather you than me...
  6. Yes, dust would be a credible root cause too - and would explain the point about the nature of the vessel. I grew up only about 3 miles away from the wood treatment plant in Bosley where the explosion happened a few years back; know people who used to work there. Way back when, I also did work experience in a materials testing lab where they had a toughened steel sphere with measured dosing, spark, pressure meters etc to test powders for explosiveness. It was eye-opening. Interestingly in industrial environments, the point that I learned was that the primary explosion tends not to be the worst one, as the amount of fuel (dust) suspended in the air is relatively low. The big problem happens if housekeeping is an issue and there is settled dust on surfaces - the first explosion lifts this into the air, meaning there is much more fuel available and any source of ignition means that very shortly after the first explosion a much larger one can follow.
  7. We have got the heated car seat covers from Lidl in my car. They work well enough (inline switch with settings for off / low / high heat) but they’d probably only be any good if you either had a cab or could do some waterproofing?
  8. Presume there will be an HSE investigation, but I’d hazard a guess at a combination of methane build-up and maintenance work. If it’s not maintenance, why would there be four people working close enough to sadly end up not going home from work today?
  9. Evening folks. Can anyone advise where I might be best placed to buy some euc seedlings from (not overly fussed about the variety). Or even whether to buy seeds - are they moderately easy to germinate?
  10. Ugh, that literally sends a tremble down my spine. I stood on a wasps nest whilst out bilberry picking when I was a kid, got stung a few times and I’ve had a fear of the feckers ever since!!
  11. I found this funnier than I ought to have done...
  12. If I was the homeowner I’d be furious, I think. We have a row of leylandii between the end of our close and the railway, on council land, massively overgrown and overshadowing the end house in particular. Can we get the council team to do anything about them (e.g. take 20 foot off the top and side them back)? Can we f... It took about three attempts to even get acknowledgement that it was adopted land. Fortunately I live five doors away so it’s not my specific issue, although I suspect it paints a picture of a general approach... In the OP’s case, I’d love to say just get on, damn the consequences and do the right thing for the homeowner. What’s the worst that could happen - council tries to push for trespass, after the fact, because you’ve needed to access around the tree to do the work? However, if you want to preserve a reputation, I thing hanging back, suggesting the homeowner lobby with relevant elected Parish / Town Councillors or a District or County Councillor or MP, saying they are at their wit’s end / it’s causing stress, don’t want to go to the press but feel there’s no other way of legitimately getting their concerns heard etc. When this hopefully has had an effect and a better approach is in place (i.e. council agrees you can have access and prune sympathetically back to the boundary, or maybe even beyond to preserve shape of the tree with a reduced crown on that stem, then go and do the job with pride.
  13. From which it could be inferred that you can put diesel into whatever type of container you want...
  14. It certainly gave me additional things to consider when I thought about him.
  15. To be fair, I’ve been on the other side of this when working in a petrol station - one with no electronic / remote activation and deactivation of pumps. It is over 25 years ago but I can still picture in my mind the little old Doris from up the road in the village, toddle up to the pump and start dispensing four star into a plastic milk bottle and me standing at the till inside wondering if the plastic was just going to melt and dump a couple of litres of highly flammable fuel all over her legs!! Luckily it didn’t but it left a vivid mental picture! Unfortunately, in some cases we have regulations as a result of idiots and therefore they have to try and deal with the resulting level of risk.
  16. I did a bit of hunting around on fleabay and Facebook marketplace and it looks like the asking price was in the right ballpark but not an outright bargain, so I don’t think I’ve missed out.
  17. Apparently it’s sold already to one of the neighbours. I’ve told him I might be asking one of them if I can borrow it when my mower dies!! [emoji23]
  18. I’ve been offered a 2006 Honda Izy self-propelled mower by the person whose house I’m in the process of buying. It looks solid and he says it runs well, has had some servicing etc and he’s asking for nigh on £200 it. I get it’s a good quality mower but that sounds like firm money for a 15 year old mower?? Thoughts?
  19. I had seen this before but for some reason watching it again has made me wonder how hard it would be to do a proper Q-car for scaring Porsche drivers at the traffic light Grand Prix? I was thinking: - start with a solid but sh!t-looking first or second generation Zafira - fit the lump out of a Zafira turbo up front (As an alternative to the first two steps, buy an existing Zafira VXR and strip all the body kit off it, exchange for kit from a povvo spec one). - bin the rear seats / box it off (maybe keep some headrests for appearance) and fit another VXR engine and running gear to drive the back wheels. Net result = Zafira running nigh on 500bhp, which could be upped to 600bhp level if you took both engines to Countenay (although you’d probably have to put big exhausts on it to get that amount of power, which would risk losing the Q-car effect...)
  20. I think I started burning the very smallest pieces (2 inches or so) after 1 summer, then most of the bigger logs the winter after that. It was only when I’d had the rest seasoning for another summer that I realised I should have tried to keep it longer, but in reality I didn’t really have enough space to store the euc and other firewood stocks too.
  21. I felled and split 2 x 40 foot eucs which were in our garden when we moved to this house. All split by hand (well, maul / wedges / 14lb hammer). Definitely split it green (although just as it starts to dry out you can find some hands cracks). It burns well but I found it needed at least 3 summers to be properly seasoned, even when split to log size.
  22. I got my current car, a Kia Niro hybrid (not the plug in or electric version) partly because in the manufacturer’s blurb / advertising it shows them towing. Apparently in the U.K. they are not homologated for towing and when I enquired with Kia U.K. they said they didn’t see there was a market in the U.K. for people to tow with crossover / small SUV vehicles?! I am led to believe the towing variants for other markets are factory-specced with uprated brakes. I guess that might be part of the situation for electric vehicles and towing - regenerative braking being rated for slowing down the weight of the vehicle itself rather than extra weight besides?
  23. I’m looking for free gin if there are any distilleries local that just happen to be giving it away?? Sorry if that sounds a bit sarky but you should understand that logs are a finished product and have a value. If you are prepared to collect wood from site, or have it dropped at a convenient location and give someone money to cover fuel costs, and accept that it will be green wood, probably softwood, then you might get something free. But you’ll still have to saw and split it then season it too.
