  1. Isn’t that below minimum wage? Or are you in a younger age group?
  2. Sorted, thanks Timon, see you Wednesday!
  3. Yes! And Gumtree and Shpock. Even offered to deliver it locally but no takers yet.
  4. All shops shut... so not taking donations of furniture owing to storage space.
  5. Who’d have thought it; it seems to be literally impossible to give something away during Covid. My house move happens this week and I’ve got a 3 seater leather sofa that is surplus to requirements, but no-one will take it. It’s used but solid, no rips or tears, a few minor scuffs and marks to add character!! Feels so wrong given that there must be people who could use it, e.g. if being rehoused, or even just for a man-cave, that if no-one wants it I will end up taking it for landfill. I’ve even offered to deliver it in the central Warwickshire area whilst I’ve got the hire van this week!!
  6. Now the flue on the back is shown, it’s more evident. It looks a bit like a pellet / chip stove I saw in a holiday property in either France or Germany. Definitely not connected properly though, so not recommended to light it as is!
  7. Well you wouldn’t be able to, would you, with all that smoke drifting around?! (Sorry, couldn’t resist...) I’m intrigued about the stove too though. Is there a chance that the outside shell is a kind of double layer and it actually draws the smoke downwards and out through a flue in the floor? That sounds crazy but otherwise I can’t see how you burn any solid fuel (wood, pellets or anything else) in there without ending up with a room full of smoke.
  8. It’s just about the same density as air - almost identical to nitrogen, very slightly rarer than oxygen. I’ve never filled a bag with acetylene to see if the density difference would be big enough to offset the weight of the bag; it certainly wouldn’t have the same lift as a helium balloon. I can imagine the bang being pretty spectacular though. Our removals company wouldn’t even move camping gas or patio gas cylinders the 100 metres or so distance from one house to the other!! Decided to do the whole move ourselves instead, that will be something to look forward to... not.
  9. Can’t see much wrong with that... probably carefully engineered to automatically unhitch if the trailer gets a weave on!! [emoji23][emoji85]
  10. This could turn into a lesson on the theory of economics... What’s your alternative? Buying logs roadside or can you get hold of arisings? If you need the wood and would otherwise have to pay £70 a cube delivered (or probably more, since the “cube” is probably a builders bag) then they might be worth that, minus whatever you value your costs and time at to fetch them, saw them and leave them to dry out. On the flip side, does the person need the space etc etc? Theory says all of this should point to a maximum you’d be prepared to pay and a minimum they’d be prepared to sell for. Providing the value to you is bigger than the value to them, there’s a deal to be had. That all having been said... I’ve only “paid” for wood for firewood once in the last thirteen years. About three years ago I parted with £23 for this lot - it’s softwood and that’s an 8 foot garage door in the background, so how does the heap size compare?? For hardwood if there isn’t too much brash to deal with, and since it sounds like you will be able to ring it up but not need to split it, I’d be thinking about the £20/tonne mark personally. Overall amount would depend on how big the pile is!!
  11. Alternative ending - “it leaves puddles of lubricant behind on the floor everywhere it has been”?
  12. Not sure if anyone local wants it, 2 gallon metal petrol can - oldish but solid with pouring spout. Comes nigh-on full of fuel which you use at your own risk (I got it from wife’s grandfather’s house clearance, for all I know it could be four star!), or promise me you will dispose of responsibly. Collection from near Warwick... Free.
  13. You’re confusing power (GW) and energy (GWh). The U.K. currently uses about 350TWh per year, ie, about 350,000,000,000kWh of electricity. The peak power on the system is closer to the 60GW you use, although peak demand has been coming down recently. Given that the (relatively historically low) amount of coal we mine in this country is from opencast, it’s not a realistic option to assume we can dispose of high level waste in the same way - it needs to be able to be put in specific rock formations with low amounts of groundwater flow, 1000m or so below ground level. It’s not impossible but the fact we had the first civil nuclear power industry in the world in this country nearly 65 years ago and still haven’t found a long term solution of dealing with the waste is telling that it’s also not straightforward. We could have some nuc plants to provide base load generation but I think there are other solutions which are lower cost, lower risk and will be a lot quicker to get built.
  14. The money for rent payments on all the really big wind farms (I.e. the offshore ones) goes to the Crown Estate. Which isn’t Liz and Phil, it’s the Treasury - so should offset other tax costs. We have the best offshore wind resources in Europe and companies prepared to take the risk on how much the wind will blow, the costs of construction etc for a 15 year guarantee on power price of about £40 (subject to CPI inflation of about 2% per year). That is less than half of what the EDF consortium (as far as I know, the only ones brave enough to try to build new large scale nuclear in the U.K. after Toshiba, Hitachi etc pulled out) need, which was £92-odd. The solution is to build as much offshore wind generation as we can, then use the surplus to electrolyse water into hydrogen for storage or conversion into synthetic hydrocarbons (for specialist applications like aviation which can’t readily be changed to run on electricity). Or store wind-produced gas in depleted offshore gas fields, empty salt caverns etc. That hydrogen or synthetic gas can then be used to run gas power stations at about 55% efficiency when the wind isn’t blowing and it’ll STILL be cheaper end to end than new nuclear, even if you ignore the immense (incalculable?) costs of building a long-term repository to store high level waste safely - which depending on who you listen to could be anything from 50 years to a million years, with something like 10,000 to 100,000 being a sensible middle ground.
  15. Mind you, from life on Guernsey those 48,000 miles were probably achieved with plenty of salt spray and never getting above 3rd gear...
  16. Bit of a sod of a trip to fetch but I thought this looked like it was cheap with the bidding at £1,350 2008 Isuzu PR7 Crew Cab Tipper AUCTIONS.EDDISONS.COM
  17. I’m assuming of course that it’s only any good for firewood, with that amount of root ball!!
  18. I think this might be my favourite one yet - £30 for a ten foot tall tree, including the brash! https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/199596071883842/
  19. Can you make sure it’s all oak, too? That’s the only thing thing that will burn in a log burner apparently...
  20. If I am going to buy something, I’d want to more or less cover the purchase costs, RFL and insurance out of a year’s worth of the amount my take-home pay will go up by, when I opt out of the car scheme. That basically means about three and a half grand, so a smidge under three grand for the car itself, then the remainder (with a bit of rounding) to cover the insurance and tax. I don’t know what it is about the S-Type; I wasn’t a fan of the retro styling when they came out. But the ones with the body kits I think look smart, plus the 2.6V6 diesel has enough oomph for my tastes (8s to 60mph, over 140mph top speed) and a published fuel economy number of 35mpg, which I reckon would still mean over 30mpg in the real world.
  21. Auto; I’ve got a dodgy left knee and driving a manual makes it ache! I will have a look at the group, although ‘er indoors has pointed out that a saloon car isn’t very dog-friendly - can’t put a dog crate in the boot!!
  22. They are getting a bit long in the tooth now, but I have a hankering for a Jag S-Type. I have an choice to make to hand back my lease car next summer and buy something instead. I’d have to pay for a hire car on the occasions that I do any business mileage (long story but the S-Type would be too old to be allowed), which would be a bit of a pain in the neck. Mind you, odds are I might not be doing any business travel anyway!! I’ve seen one today that is sensibly priced, very late model, looks v. straight and clean, good MOT history and (now I’m knocking on a bit!) insurance is about £350 per year fully comp. 23. At risk of going off topic - a mate’s dad when I was growing up was a joiner doing bespoke windows, staircases etc. He had a saying about “it’s worse than being in prison” for anywhere he went that the people didn’t offer him a drink - the implication being than even in clink you get a cuppa. If no drinks on the first day he used to take a flask and stick some extra on the bill!!
  24. After a couple of bright and sunnyish days, it is now raining and blowing a hooley here too (Warwick). I expect there will be Christmas wrapping paper / packaging blown around everywhere when it has calmed down.
  25. Garden vac / shredder. Only a domestic one though. I bought my missus a pressure washer (which she asked for) with car and patio cleaning attachments; who said romance is dead??!
