  1. Get to the job, get set up, take a break, maybe 30 mins, then go till it's done on one day or two dayjobs. On jobs that are on going (utilities etc), crack on in the morning (that's when most of the work gets done) take a breather about 12 or 1, then carry on till about 4. Spend about 30mins at the end of the day getting a plan together for the next day so you can get straight into it in the morning.
  2. Can tell you for sure the Ranger is complete rubbish at towing. At least the 05 one is anyway. Have heard of a few L200's giving trouble from the diffs seizing (but no experience of it myself), one of our neighbours has one though, and never given them any trouble. They don't actually use it as a jeep though. We have 3 different Hiluxes in work and all 3 are great towing, and more than acceptable off road. Pretty thirsty though, but what jeep isn't?
  3. It is shameful both sides of the border. So some of the sites are actually located up there. When I say "Irish effort" I mean the island of Ireland.
  4. Cheers mate... updates to follow
  5. 6 million trees over any time frame is pretty cool. Nice to know someone is replacing them as we are felling them. There's massive lack of native woodland in Ireland, certainly a lack of old growth. This is a small first step to replacing some of it. In the 1600's it was said that a squirrel could run from Dublin to Cork without touching the ground. Not sure how true that is, but a drive along the same route today and you can clearly see how far removed from anything like that statement we have become. The fact that its a million trees in one day, is to draw attention to what is being done, and hopefully encourage similar smaller scale projects. I have been told that the website is going live in the next couple of days, will post the link as soon as I get the nod from them that its up.
  6. I started cutting them nine years ago, and never stopped, so no need to start again.
  7. I have a very motivated friend friend who is organising a monumental plan to plant a million native trees in one day. The date hasn't been set yet, but there are several organisations involved, and some sites have been organised. Part of it will be for renewable commercial forestry and a large part of it will be earmarked to be left untouched and left to it's own devices. There are plans in the pipeline for visitor centres and educational tours etc. All in all a really top class idea. And a sort of karmic solution for all those tree surgeons who've taken the money and run once or twice in the past If anyone with a facebook page could "like" the page and show some support it would be great. Will post some updates as it progresses. It's an Irish effort, but we'll take support from wherever we can get it.: https://www.facebook.com/pages/One-Million-Trees-in-One-Day/221340781288921
  8. Gotta laugh at those who think you can work through a flu. As in proper flu and not a bad cold or a sniffle. Time and again I hear lads sniffling, or sneezing in work and when asked if they are sick they reply with something like "touch of the flu", "this flu is killing me". It's not a flu, it's a cold, and yes you can work through it. A flu, on the other hand, makes being vertical nearly impossible. Once in my life I have had a proper flu, and no way in hell could anyone work through it. I couldn't stand, let alone walk and working was something I wondered would I ever have the pleasure of doing again. Fever, headache, sweating, shivering (nearly to the point of convulsion), honestly thought the game might be over on a couple of occasions. We're all human, and while I very rarely miss a day through sickness, there are illnesses that can make working impossible. Health cover is a must if you're the breadwinner.
  9. Cobra reckon that the materials degrade in strength by about 2% a year, and that they should last a minimum of 12 years. I have installed 3 cobra braces in the past one of which was about 8 years ago. Will try to get out to it and have a look-see, and get a photo. Would be interested to see how its held up. Might be a while though as its about 200 miles away. I installed another one 3 years ago a bit closer that may be worth a look aswell. Anyway here's what cobra have to say on the matter: http://www.cobranet.de/en/pdf/cobra_us_brochure.pdf
  10. Fair enough. Still stand by the rest of my statement though.
  11. Surely stickers with a water based adhesive wil just come off on the first rainy day. Something big enough to crack a helmet slightly degraded by adhesive is going to cause you more problems than a cracked skull... I'm thinking broken neck maybe. IMO helmets are to stop you bumping your skull off of stuff, you're eyes are for making sure nothing big lands on your head.
  12. Found a bag of bullets with the stumpgrinder. Dodgy bloke was watching me over a wall grinding an old rotten Beech stump. I broke a tooth and had to go back to the van to get tools to replace it. He then hurriedly ran to the stump and started rummaging around. I got back quicker than he would have like and scarpered empty handed. Suspecting he was looking for a stash of drugs I had a wee look myself before I found them. Handed them in to the park manager who handed them in to the Gardai. Often wonder what would have happened if I'd have hit them with the grinder.
  13. 12 - good laugh. Defo 2 much time on your hands though. lol
  14. Cheers guys... wouldn't have had a clue where to start without a tree species or seeing the underneath of the second one.
  15. Heap of info to gather... take all the time you need, mate. I'm just shamelessly plugging it for you to show my worth as a marketing/Public Relations manager.
  16. Pretty bad photo Id-wise (no underneath shot) and she's not sure what she found it on but:
  17. A friend took this today, she reckons they were on some sort of gorse like shrubs so could be anything really. She asked me what they are and they have me stumped. Anyone care to enlighten us?
  18. Ditto that. Could do the width of the country from Sligo to Dublin and back again on a tank, and a couple days of local driving on top of that. 500-600 miles to a tank depending on how you drive it.
  19. Had a 04 Astravan 1.7 CDTi all last year. Great little van, fun to drive, no problems with it as long as I had it. I know it was abused by the 2 previous caretakers and withstood their worst.
  20. Have to wear them cutting for NIE. They are a PITA. Can't stand them.
  21. Think he means kicked off the rope. Actually pretty handy with the pantin that it comes off the rope easily.
  22. Everything you need to know (except the bit about the spring, not sure either. It was there when I got it so it's staying there): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBfyrzZzsvk]Spiderjackery III - YouTube[/ame]
  23. Nice trees mate. How big are they? They look massive in the video. Looks like a fun day out.
  24. Wouldn't say never mate. Not in our lifetime, maybe. But necessity is the mother of invention and all that. When we need it, someone will figure out a way. Would love a quiet saw, no more ear defenders. Make the job a lot safer.
  25. Always when you least expect it. When you are doing stuff with a high potential for harm you are tuned in and make sure nothing goes wrong. Its the little things that you're not worrying about that will get ya. It's bloody hard to watch every little thing day in day out though. Glad it worked out the way it did and you got a spin in a chopper. Wish you a speedy recovery.
