  1. Wouldn't bother with eyes as you're stuck with that length and can only adjust by adding wraps or braids. Get a good length of a friction cord you like, add 2 double fishermans and tie your hitch a bit long, and adjust the length until you have it the way you like it. When you're done, cut off excess undo fishermans and measure. Saves a bit of hassle when making up a new one.
  2. Ouch!!! Bit harsh mate. Know he's being a bit of an insulting prat but....
  3. I know about tapered hinges, but rarely use them, and never as a means of avoiding damage to a lawn. Can I critique your work some more now?
  4. As above. The 131 is a bit heavy, but much more powerful than the 101 (which is grossly under-powered, and not a lot lighter). You'll be surprised how quickly you get used to the sound of the engine. Pole strength shouldn't make a difference though. Any piece big enough to catch and bend the extended pole should be cut carefully to avoid this cos they ain't cheap to fix. I use both daily, and would have the 131 any day. Know absolutely nothing about the Echo though, but as polesaws go I'd say the 131 would be pretty hard to beat.
  5. I've seen many trees spin, some on purpose, some by accident, some by happy accident. But if someone got me in to do a job and specifically asked me not to wreck a lawn, there's no way I'd chance it. MEWP and/or crane. If they can afford a full time groundkeeper, and live on a 10million dollar estate, they can afford a crane. And a healthy tip for the lads cleaning up, and sure they might as well throw in a cuppa and some biccies while they're at it.
  6. Our chief must have bought a batch of them a while ago and now all the lads are cursing him (gratefully though for the free pants). A tad warm is an understatement. Also the material is not the same as the normal ones and not nearly as hard wearing. Have a pair 6 months old and will be lucky to get another 6 months out of them. Got nearly 2 years out of my old pair (normal grey ones).
  7. Nice landing. Reckon there'd be too many variables to accurately rely on getting a 180 spin in a situation where you needed it though.
  8. There's a book called Supernature by Lyall Watson, some really interesting stuff in it and can be bought on Amazon for 1p + postage. There's a chapter in it where a guy hooks a plant up to a polygraph, then burns a leaf and notices a change in the electro-magnetic field around the plant..... but that's not the interesting bit. He then burns the leaf of another plant in the presence of the plant on the polygraph, and notices a change in the electro-magnetic field of the plant attached to the polygraph at the same instant..... but that's not the interesting bit. He then THINKS about burning the leaf of the plant on the polygraph, and notices a change in the electro-magnetic field of the plant at the instant he thinks about harming it. There are plenty of other experiments (of all kinds) documented in the book, but what I really liked about it was that he doesn't draw any conclusions or sensationalise any of it.
  9. Treemagic, very simple, "does what it says on the tin" harness. Love mine, never had a problem with it. I have tried the tree motion a few times and don't see what all the fuss is about to be honest.
  10. Works fine on my tachyon... tried it on Blaze, self tends even better.
  11. Wish I could say I was as proficient at this. This guy really is at the top of his game.
  12. Just getting to the blower while everyone else is still dragging and sweating is a skill in itself. Some lads look like they're dossing when they pick it up, others have the timing down to an art form.
  13. If you are asking because you want to attempt to do work on a tree, then as above, do a course then work with someone experienced for a while so that you can see hazards you would otherwise have missed. If you just want to climb for fun (ie. no chainsaw), find a competent climber to show you how. Your question is so simple, it sets alarm bells off for anyone who reads it. I would strongly advise not attempting what you might be thinking about until you have had some hands-on training (formal or casual).
  14. Deet is really bad for you long term. Citronella... buy it in any chemist. About 25 drops in 2 litres of water.. give it a good shake. Get 2 good handfuls and cover yourself as much as possible. Repeat when wears off in an hour or 2.. Job done... Really works a treat.
  15. He forgot to tell you his life savings amount to about a fiver cos he spent em all finding the perfect saw..... a 460!!
  16. Truer word was never spoken. Quickest way to teach someone the value of kit is to teach them the value in cash relative to wages. Probably should have been agreed upon before the incident but no harm in letting him know the next time comes out of his wages. Harsh now, but in a few years when he's a more competent worker he'll probably look back and thank you. Coming from someone who now thanks his old boss for being such a hard nut.
  17. Ditto that... 460 is a much better saw. That said, if its power you're after and you already have a 390, just get a 660. There's not much a 460 will do that the 390 won't. At least with the 660, if you need to break out a proper big gun you'll have one.
  18. That people will have a go at anything to get something for nothing?
  19. My old boss has one. Might be a stretch to travel, but if the money was right I'm sure he'd consider it. Here it is in action (video 2): Four Seasons Tree Services - Videos
  20. Do yourself a favour mate and just use the pole saw. Never had a ticket myself and know I wouldn't last long in any company if realistically if I refused to use one on the grounds that I don't have a ticket. Bit different if I didn't have a climbing ticket or rigging and asked to do a big takedown. Don't do anthing stupid with it and use your common sense. Would you be happy to walk away from the job if it became a bigger issue with your boss? As for using 2-stroke as chain oil, well that's just plain idiotic, nearly anything else would be better. But if your boss (ie the guy paying for the 2-stroke) wants you to use it then just use it. I'd make sure you heard him right first though, and make sure there's no chain oil available.
  21. Buckingham titaniums and velcro straps. Gotta have the metal inserts though.
  22. Actually think the voice-over would inspire confidence in a customer. You are pretty softly spoken, a far cry from the chainsaw weilding yob that domestic customers would be trying to avoid. Reckon you could do without explaining how we get into trees though (throwline climbing rope etc.). All a customer needs to know is that we are trained to a high standard, and competent to do it safely, as is shown all throughout the rest of the video. Doesn't do any harm, but I just feel like it doesn't need to be in there. Good job tho.
  23. No probs mate. Stick up a few after pics when you're done. If only more customers were like you, I could give up this silliness and get a real job!
  24. Oh, forgot to add, if you do the sides first you'll have a much easier time getting the branches on top to fall clear.
