  1. Last one was about 12 months ago...
  2. I've heard of 2 incidents of steel cables on steam ploughing engines snapping. One of these was within the last 10 years. Bearing in mind this cable is probably about an inch diameter, thats either some serious forces involved or a fair old bit of damage to the cable. Stay safe guys!
  3. Walnut reduction from this morning, left hand stem seemed to be in decline so has had a fair bit taken out. sorry for the poor pics but i thought i'd share them anyway
  4. Either knotting or larksfooting will reduce strength dramatically, particularly in dyneema slings. Just a case of knowing the limits of your kit in any given situation.
  5. Haha this is entertaining. As a gap filler to keep me ticking over these rates really arent a problem. I wouldnt say this is where i'm making my big profits but its worth doing at these prices to round off a short day or similar. I must be doing something right though as i'm paying myself well and buying kit regularly to progress my business.
  6. 4 trees may sound a lot but each one didnt take many mins to throw a line up put an anchor in and chuck out the deadwood. i suspect many firms would have quoted more. For me with minimal overheads (i do have the correct insurances, ppe, lolered climbing kit etc) What could easily have been £35/hour/man is ample. If you work on 5 hours a day at those rates to allow for quoting, travel etc its easy for a small time setup to make money. I appreciate this is all together differnt for bigger setups and would be unfair to compare them.
  7. Today i deadwooded 4 lime trees (couple of big bits in each). I priced it at £70 anticipating being there about an hour. Could easily have done it in an hour but was messing about having a leasurely day so took 2. I felt that my price was correct. edit: there were 2 of us on site
  8. I shall be there pretending i know how to watch people climbing trees...
  9. Not next to RAF stafford by any chance?
  10. Great pics as ever. Not heard of a life belt before but seen many of them and couldnt quite figure it out. I was lucky enough to do a fair bit of work in sutton park ( Sutton Park - Introduction ) last year where there are dozens with this feature. Also if you're ever in the birmingham area its well worth a walk around!
  11. HAHA taken the words right outa my mouth!
  12. As others have said, work for someone else first before you go spending lits of money. Learn what kit you like and what is rubbish first hand. I'd reccommend Ian morgan arb for your training, message me if you cant faind his details on the web. Matt
  13. Just what I did on a smaller ash last week. Except the first side to fell needed to go a bit sideways to the direction of lean so it had a winch on. the second half was easy. Worked a treat
  14. Lanyard, Silky (currently in sawpob but i'm gonna move it back onto my harness), Ring and pulley cambium saver. That was it until recently but i've recently added a prussic, spare carabiner and a multisling with a revolver on it so i can m-rig with a bit of a friction saver.
  15. Good stuff boss! Nice to hear a bit of Dan le sac as well. Keep 'em coming! Matt
  16. Had a play about with a few different ways of creating friction today and its not too difficult to make something good for branch walking in and out. Ascending with a pantin seems to be the problem though. Rope wrench it is then
  17. I would think with the right rope (probably a 13mm) you'd get less friction than required to act as a true decender so ought to be on a par with the rope wrench. Certainly for decending it should work in a similar fashion. If it does create more friction than the RW might it be possible to change the hitch to a slightly less grippy setup. Thoughts?
  18. Yep it seems so after some more searching. Thanks for the replies guys! Will post some pics when I finally get organised...
  19. Is anyone using a kong robot in their srt setup as opposed to the rope wrench? Anyone used both? Good, bad, worth a try? Anyone stocking them in the UK? Is that enough questions? Matt
  20. Ta, will get on with it once i've had chance to drop by and rob a fid! Still up for a climb thurs afternoon?
  21. this is my first attempt at splicing so be gentle! Am i right in thinking I should be using a 16-strand class 1 splice for marlow boa? I'm using the samson instructions. Also what guage of piano wire or similar are you using for your wire fids? Matt
  22. I'm a fan of cobra in principal (never installed it myself) but I've been to a job where cobra had been installed about 12 years earlier according to the customer and was both very loose and the materials appeared to be quite badly degraded on close inspection. I suppose this is both a maintainance and training of installers issue.
  23. Its about 5 miles from home and thats full time climbing, though not the most technical stuff. I'm lucky enough to be doing well on a freelance bases so was able to turn the job down. This is very common in this area I work hard so as not to get involved!
  24. Before tax.
  25. I'm a fully ticketed but fairly inexperienced climber (about 1 years experience climbing 3 days per week, grounding a couple of years before that) . I've just been offered £68 ish per day on the books, ppe and climbing kit payed for by employer, 20days holiday plus bank holidays. That seems to be at the upper end of the pay scale in north staffordshire for climbers. Bearing in mind this is a fairly low income part of the country. Matt
