  1. I have been working without 40/41 for ten years and I know I have missed out because I have had to learn about rigging/pruning the hard way - e.g. learn by your mistakes. I still make them sometimes! I am due to complete 40/41 this spring. Skyhuck. I kind of see your point. Your defending your experience, which I m sure is extensive. However, I am sure you will agree, we never stop learning.
  2. With the redundancy in the training department. Whats the honest appraisal for training provisions from the AA? Zoe Paskins did a great job organising some training for me last year. Surely any loss in this department doent send a good message as far as investment in training is concerned?
  3. I am finding it hard to see what I am looking at! Hack_it_and_strap_it.com seemingly!
  4. Does it have to be taken away? It would be best left for biodiversity!
  5. Short back and sides sir? Take a seat.
  6. So someone has bought a woodland where someone else is going to front up the cost of managing for the forseeable future? Sounds sensible to me! When you take into account asset value, tax benefits, environmental payments with no management costs. It does add up.
  7. How much Reg?
  8. Alarm bells should ring if three quotes average 15k, and only one comes in at 4k. Something isnt quite right......
  9. Its just similar technology. Sorry, I derailed the thread.
  10. We have been using 9.3. Absolutely amazing! Thanks for the offer, I will drop you a line later in the day.
  11. Just googled it. £499 + vat etc for the license, but what hardware do you need to purchase to run it?
  12. Tony, How do you get hold of PocketGIS. I am studying Arcmap GIS at the moment, its absolutely amazing. But would cost many thousands to own, pus you need a mega computer to run it.
  13. Spend as much as you can, or construct specific Bat habitats in your tree. The cheaper Bat boxes rarely work. Perhaps you can strap lengths of splitting timber to the tree? Preferably on the sunny side. Apparently it works well and is habitat for a more diverse range of insects.
  14. There was a great fastrac with a crane on ebay awhile back. I think it was a friend of someone on here. Looked the business! I would definately consider that or a Valmet. If the Euro/£ issue ever reverts then buying that kind of stuff would become more viable!
  15. I was speaking to a Joiner (carpenter south of hadrians wall) yesterday who said his last apprentice did four years with him, then left (equivalent of leaving college if you like) and became self employed. The Joiner then needed a hand on a job and asked his former apprentice if he could manage it. He said yes, but the wage was £20 per hour. - £200 a day for a subcontractor who had only just finished serving his apprenticeship. Isnt it amazing how the trades differ.
  16. Get some practice in before your next assessment. Unfortunately you cant be making these mistakes too often. Take your saw out and practice felling cuts on a stump. Get them perfect. Dont turn up to your assessment with a tired old chain on its last chance to sharpen.
  17. Roe Deer/Rabbit/Grey Squirrel.
  18. Hamadryad, I thought you were employed? What do you need a big wagon for?
  19. Tree News is a good one too. Especially for urban tree issues and tree biology/associated biodiversity. It has arrived twice free with AA stuff. But I have seen it on the shelf too.
  20. "Read my mind, I did say to her why not fell and replant, the things only 15 years old, problem will only get worse blah blah. she was having non of it. loves the tree in all its hairyness! Ive told her i'll be back!" You will be looking after that tree for years to come, preventing it from out growing its environment, it will earn you respect, experience and maybe a few pounds. It will teach you about tree biology and reactions to pruning. It will be a habitat for birds, bats, insects, lichens, mosses and fungi. Why offer to fell it, when you can manage it? Keep up the high standard!
  21. I thought it was pretty good. But really not doing THAT much to inspire the nation into traditional crafts, as is the stated aim of the program.
  22. Great idea to create a database of images John. Thats a shame if the Ceder has to go John. Serious amenity value and landscape impact!
  23. I was of the understanding that as Arborists (not qualified Bat people) the most we can practically do is operate a visual assessment of the roost site during the time of day most likely to see bats coming and going, under the supervision of a Bat expert? Is that correct? Also I think in your Visual Tree Assessment, the likelyhood of bat roosts should be graded from highly likely to not likely? As usual I am more than happy to be corrected. I have a small amount of experience in identifying bat roosts and creating bat habitats and its something I plan to develop over the next couple of years. Any corrections on my pre-conceived ideas is all for the greater good! The IEEM runs Bat cousres also.
  24. Thats what I thought. Its just that there is a lot of bad feeling about price increases. But when there is no competition, in reality the price will only keep rising as far as I can see. What I was interested in was whether any other brand was willing to compete on the same level at a different price in the next 12 months.
  25. I would like to try and replace the saw before it dies on the job. Then you have a spare in the form of the older one for a good while. Although she is on song still, I wont kid myself that a ten year old saw is gonna last that much longer.
