  1. laburnums crap for a winch/pulley support, very poor roots
  2. Im going to dig out a few books and find an answer to this great chalenge, I will say this though the very small amount of lignin in the hosepipes would probably just turn to dust, which would explain very well its lack of substance and the enlargement
  3. cause could also have been a strip canker during the droughts of 2003
  4. its a lovely tree, it will almost certainly, if it did fail probably fail onto front lawn away from houses. It has been reduced before, fairly well too i think. Its a keeper in my book, but then im happy to live here with a 300 year old oak outside my bedroom window!
  5. there is a massive difference between a copper beech and purpureum
  6. yes david, thats precisely why they are enlarged, the cellulose and hemicellulose fibrils are GONE! The hoses have been eaten, stripped out, gone, they have ceased to fill that void:biggrin: and its pectin in the middle lamella?
  7. thought no one would say it!
  8. lovely shot of the nature of this decay on pines with their resinous pits, confined largely to heart rot in pines for long periods, as opposed to larix decidua:thumbup:
  9. i dont know how you did that, multiple shots on one is cool!
  10. The root crown and flare of base is very typical of long term Meripilus
  11. very nice work. would say though that just because the neighbor had issues doesn't always follow, if that was the case there would be no forests! wont ask who advised!
  12. great idea for a thread, I will dig out a few books to offer as a prize to encourage participation. I will go find a few and list them shortly
  13. this one is tough woody and durable,
  14. wow, loadsa 50 somethings, maes me feel a lot more positive, they do say 50 is the new forty!
  15. ganoderma australe
  16. no David they are ganodermas:001_rolleyes:
  17. yep, and they will be back no doubt, irony as the alarms turned up today! add insult to injury the old bill used my landy today to hide while they checked speeders
  18. I was just setting myself up again, got all new gear, hadnt even used the new big saws, 2 days of possession and gone, stripped clean last night. Words cannot describe this feeling
  19. I was so close to throwing it all in, I wa sin a dead end 9-5 working for a firm, no incentives no reward just grief and boredom. Then I went freelance again and ive been investing in new kit like saw mills etc my days are not the same, one day im planking timber i felled last week, then im quiet for a week and catch up at home with the veggies, then it goes mental for a fortnight with big tricky climbs for other firms, mixed in a few privates and I have to say Im 42 in a month and loving it, found my third wind. chin up, paddle through the treacle and youll find your mojo again.
  20. interesting, took a dead one down a few weeks ago, just used it for kindling which it is also awesome as! Might look to other uses now.
  21. just had two of these arrive in 36 for the 066 and 48inch for the 088 heavy but looking like just the ticket for me new alaskan
  22. and why the hell not
  23. maybe as it appears to be going past timber values try promoting it as an early veteran future ancient Oak site, you could even put this to the ATF crew and see if they could offer better advice. Recruitment into the landscape of new ancient/veteran trees is now critical.
