  1. Next purchase scheduled for New Years Day. May as well start the New Year the right way. Great raffle and charity so well worth supporting .
  2. Even when you have a legal power to remove people, it does not necessarily mean force can be used. I have been that 'ego inflated person in hi-viz clothing' and quite happy to say I still am in the right circumstances. Sometime though voice is enough to safe a life!
  3. My understanding is that once a road is closed, it does not matter the condition of the road, you are no longer legally allowed to drive along it without permission. The barriers they have put up this time are continuous from hedge to hedge. The local council don't do it on all roads, just major routes, due to the problems of drivers who can't drive through flooded water safely and then create hazards for other road users.
  4. Now locally when they close a road for flooding the council tend to barrier the road off completely. A few years back drivers were continually flouting the Closed Road signs. They then found that after the negotiating the flooded length of road the police were waiting for them, tickets issued. Although they were issuing tickets they were turning people around up approached from that direction.
  5. Christmas Day tickets bought.... the most appropriate day for a Christmas Charity Raffle on behalf of the the children. HAPPY CHRISTMAS
  6. Ahhh, that is why I estimated too long a length, he was skinnier and shorter than I thought .
  7. Interesting topic, I hate putting my socks on the wrong feet. The first sock I put on in the morning is dependent on which sock I pick up first .
  8. I think it is a set up by Google. If you back off you find the car on the side road is further up the hill and Stig is not present. As you approach Stig appears and the car is by the junction. When you are at the side of Stig he disappears and the car is back further up the road again. Once you pass and look back he then appears again and the car moves back down towards the junction. I can't see any reason for the Google to car to make more than one pass of this particular point.
  9. Your welcome, and good luck with the project.
  10. The BTCV are a good organisation to be affiliated with if carrying out practical conservation work as a voluntary group. Have a look at Community Support | The Conservation Volunteers for more information as local group can arrange insurance through them, which includes the use of power tools.
  11. Not a definitive answer by any means, but according to "Agricultural Vehicles on the Road a guide to the legislation" the maximum overall width of an wheeled agricultural combination including offset trailers and appliances is 2.55 metres. This may be exceed, providing the conditions from Schedule 4 STGO (Motor Vehicles [special Types] General Order 1979) are complied with. Once you are over 2.55 metres then additional conditions apply. From 2.55 to 3 metres this is a speed limit of 20mph. The book mentioned above is well worth investing in.
  12. It as been interesting reading peoples views, but I am curious to what the actual contract says for this type of work. Is it covered in the contract?
  13. It really depends on what you are calling public woods. If you are referring to woods that the public have access but are owned by somebody, then only those people with express or applied permission can remove the wood. Any other removal is theft to my knowledge. Dead wood is a beneficial element in a woodland. I am not sure how many woods have common rights left on them to take wood (Estovers), but this would be restricted the common right holders, not the wider general public.
  14. Been following this thread with interest and had a look at the HSE pages (I'm not a LOLER inspector, but have to get a variety of kit inspected each year). This page states : So I would take it that the examination is based on the stated purpose that is given at the time of examination. Therefore if you stated different use to each examiner, then it could pass or fail on that difference.
  15. Decided to do a bit of digging by date and the answer I came up with is Pete Mctree and the date is 18/07/2007.
  16. I hope this helps answer your question as it is taken straight from Chapter 8 part 2.
  17. Thinking back there as been quite a few times, in the summer months when I have worn shorts whilst using a chainsaw. I can't see what the problem is?
  18. This is true except you have to dispose of any excess product you have in stock by 31st October 2013. This is turning into a nice little earner for the suppliers and disposal companies. I hope other herbicides don't start following this route.

    Roadside work

Chapter 8 part 1 is very good when trying to work out what system you want to use. There are strict rules though as to when some form of traffic control system is needed, which is down to visibility, width of remaining road, etc. Irrespective of type of traffic management used, it is my understanding that you do need to have a trained operative on site who is carrying their certification with them.
  20. Common land is not indirectly owned by the public, but there are rights associated with the common which might extend to everyone. It is a minefield and people assume they have rights to do something when legally they do not. With regard to the National Trust, the Byelaws are an interesting read:
  21. I have yet to find land that is owned by the public and the loss of dead wood habitat can be detrimental to a site. As to hoop jumping it really depends on who you deal with and what you are wanting the dead wood for?
  22. Whilst ordering 3 chainsaws for work I decided to order an MSA 200 C for myself as they offered me a very good deal, which I picked up today. Haven't had a chance to play with it in anger yet, but so far I like what I see. Decided the best bet with the chain oil is to get into the habit of topping it up when changing the battery. Then again, in the first instance I better make sure it hasn't run out before then .
  23. Decided to do a bit of digging as I had not heard this before, although I new that various Quango's are starting to operate this way. After trawling through a lot of irrelevant information came across the Fee for Intervention (FFI) pages. Worth a look at and the associated links if you want to know more about this potentially lucrative visit from the HSE.
