  6. I'm daft enough, although it is usually for demo purposes. Last one was quite small, only just over 6" dia. Location was a pain though for swinging a felling axe so used my smaller Forest Axe instead. I was really pleased when the tree went down in the right direction. All though the tree was due to come down, I was challenged to take it down with an axe.
  7. Except it also as to comply with The stinger is if a car is later brought out based on the van, then the van is still treated as a van and the car as a car.

    gps

How accurate and in what conditions? The current GPS receiver I use for work is also set up for GLONASS. Using both systems means I am getting a lot more accurate results in woods and valley areas. It is not cheap though. I personally own a Garmin 12 which is very basic but does give a fairly accurate grid reference with no frills. When I bought it many years ago it surpassed some of the more up to date cheep receivers in woodland & valley situations. It really depends how you want to use your GPS as to what would be best suited for your needs at any set price point.
  9. I'm hoping to get work behind this as it is an excellent idea. Just waiting for the meeting later in the month when we can discuss it and hopefully get agreement to add our equipment.
  10. The habitat destruction I have done or got contractors to do on my behalf on SSSI's is extensive. The bottom line is what is in the SSSI allowed works and what is in the special permission category. This can vary from site to site. If you are unsure, there is nothing wrong in speaking to Natural England direct.
  11. My understanding then is that the allowance would be over all sites owned by the local authority rather than per individual site unless there as been a recent change in policy by the Forestry Commission.
  12. I would like it if photo's posted in threads automatically shrink to fit the browser window so as to reduce the necessity of sideways scrolling when looking at a page with a large image on. Also is it possible to avoid photographs appearing twice in the same post? Most of the time I look at threads via the unread posts search. When I look at the main forum page I get bewildered by the total number of sub forums.
  13. Fantastic news. Thank you for all your efforts and the generosity of the donaters with some excellent prizes. Both keeps us all digging deep in our pockets for the benefit of the Childrens Trust.
  14. Long live the laid hedge, however our livestock would quite easily eat there way through it. Not a great fan of barbed wire but found that it is more stock proof when slack. Trying to change diehards regarding the use of barbed wire fencing is a lot harder. As mention previously I have witnessed cattle rubbing themselves on the barbed wire hard enough to pull out the staples holding the wire.
  15. I was confused by the term slaiced too as it is not one I had come across before. After looking at the photo's I see that that it is a very tight eye splice. A back splice as I know it can only be tied in laid rope. I always like the challenge of understanding the terminology used for the same thing in different fields.
  16. Works here too. Steve, would you like us to stay logged in so you can test numbers at once?
  17. Neighbour just insisted on giving me some money for help him out. Now turned into Raffle Tickets which according to my calculations brings us to £9300.... The clocks ticking to the cut off.... get them whilst you can!!
  18. Nope, because the first 19 tickets don't exist according to Steve's earlier post.
  19. The power to close the road to some or all uses is defined under the Road Traffic Act 1984 as amended. If my understanding is correct it is because of "likelihood of danger to the public, or of serious damage to the road, " grounds and this type of closure doesn't need the statuary notice before the closure takes affect.
  20. My comment was based on a two dimensional picture and the questions you asked regarding the tree. It is an option to consider. I have seen many an 'unbalanced' tree last for years and others that are perfectly balanced go over. Then again where houses are concerned then I get extra cautious as nothing is guaranteed.
  21. Taken from this thread http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/arbtalk-christmas-charity-raffle-2013/67267-closing-time-date-purchasing-raffle-tickets.html#post1024539
  22. Thanks Steve, that was the missing bit of information for the calculation.
  23. Not sure which number you are looking at but the actual raffle number is the xxxxx which is in the form of ARBTALK13/xxxxx in the left hand box. Hope that helps.
  24. HAPPY NEW YEAR. Just got my latest tickets through. Looks like we only have £540 to raise to get to the £7000 mark (based on my last ticket number). So if you are interested in a more up to date figure on how much as been raised so far, by a ticket and then times your ticket number by £5 .
