  1. I would think dropping chip a bit like delivering logs 5 miles ok 15 miles takes half the morning especially if they are out in the sticks and have not spoken to someone for three weeks. What do people do with chip once its sat in their yard ? why does it have to be profit neutral or is that just for the person dropping it off. If someone dropped their waste in my yard without paying I would expect to get money for it.
  2. Perhaps there could be a room called " general bitching " then those that want to take rise out of each other can keep it there. New members possibly see banter between old muckers on here think its the norm and it spreads through out.
  3. If you know someone reliable with an 8 wheeler I would take some douglas fir for making kindling if we can make the figures work.
  4. I may have this wrong but have a vision of a pulley sticking out the back of a tractor with a 6 in wide belt on like you see on a steam engine ? . Is a modern pto shaft able to take this sideways force or am I wrong end of stick.
  5. For a badly knackered chain get it on a bench grinder stones last years and its quick.
  6. Three or one 4ft chain, labour is expensive files are cheap and it gets dark quick now.
  7. Easy if you are looking for a work truck hilux. If you need a luxury reliable family 4x4 then last of the 100 series Amazons. If you want to listen to your heart rr sport all day long. Better looking miles more up to date and better to drive. The down side one of the most unreliable vehicles on the road that cost the earth to repair if you get a bad one.
  8. Very true they just want cheap. Come December when all the wood has gone you could sell them bits of old kitchen cupboard.
  9. I think most of the guys on here see it completely from the customers point of view its a huge amount of money for a drop of wood on the drive. From the log mans point of view there is only a very poor wage with big bills always around the corner. The trick to getting quality logs is keep it all local and dont shop round for the cheapest price and find someone you can trust you may find the quality drops in the winter but an honest person will tell you.
  10. I got a few bits of cord from 3 years ago some especially the beech with bark fell of looks seasoned and once processed will be great in a month or two. The ash, oak and arcasia are 38% and look as green as the day they were cut with sap squirting out as u split it. The only timber I have seen start to season in the cord is beech and birch. If you did not get your logs in vented bags by last march they are next years stock ie september 2014.
  11. That looks like a boulter tipper conversion. Very well made but heavy big tipping ram and steel floor . Get it down the weigh bridge and see what it weighs empty with driver. I am guessing 2400 kg. The rear tyre looks loaded but could be soft ? Looks like ours.
  12. I dont think its so much the land owners but the government decided to put a tax of £15 a tonne on everything comming out of forestry commission sites about 3 years ago. So all the private estates upped their price as well. If you process 500 tonnes and dont make much money doing 1000 tonnes means you dont have time to do something else profitable along side. Best solution I found dont do any
  13. I bought a mk 4 with 140k on the clock and 4 years later loaded with too many logs its still the same truck. No repairs starts on the button done about 30k in it. Very heavy on diesel 20 mpg I would have a mk 5 with the d4d much better on fuel next time.
  14. Then comes the biggest shock of all people who spend their time and money on equipment and petrol cutting up logs want paying. Nice man in the stove shop said if we spend 4k on burner and install, pay back will be a year with free wood maybe a bit longer if we pay £50 for a transit load.
  15. Looks like Asda have stopped selling it. It was a light lager 2.8% alc and part of my staple diet. A can or two at night at £1.79 for four cans. A beer I really liked unlike the awfull value beers. Anyone know where you can get a decent beer for cheap money
  16. Why the drop in price. Has the govenment scrapped a subsidy. They shut Slough recently if the chip has to travel further it must make it worth a lot less.
  17. No I think it is simper than that. Once scanned in how do they know its you if you dont show photo id ea time. They are not a small independant and have many staff who wont know everybody. I dont understand what you are trying to say in the rest of your post I suspect your thinking at a higher level than me. Thats not meant to sound sarcastic or offensive your dealing with a qualified engineer with 30 years experience who was trained a different way to you. Most of the engineering sites I visit are controlled by people who drove a minibus last week now they are head of facilities after being on a weeks course. I served a 4 year apprenticeship 25 years ago and am learning still every day.
  18. Our local scrap yard needs a utility bill and photo id every time I go in. They have known me 30 years my kids go to school with theirs. They are doing as they are told by the complete bunch of idiots in white hall. The country has completely lost the plot and soon will be run by young unskilled university educated idiots with a degree in health and safety laws.
  19. I am looking for a few butts around 20" to try through my woodmiser. Can collect 2.5 tonnes at a time around the Andover Hants area. If it is cost effective would like a lot more in the future will get through an arctic a month.
  20. Just buy a crate from the man and see how it pans out for you.
  21. Bacs and cheques are more to do with big brother making sure you hand 40% over to the tax man than preventing theft. If you work 15 hrs a week and claim benefits you wont pay 40% then you can lay in your pit while everyone else works 6 1/2 days a week.
  22. Not all these vehicles are plated for 3500kg gross. A lot of defenders are 2950 to keep them away from class 7 mot. I would say in most cases the transit has a better payload than a 110 but I am no expert I am sure there are more knowledgable people on here than me.
  23. very distinctive smell I like it for 10 mins then it grates on you. I think it has a lot of naturals oils which is why it weathers well probably helps it burn as well
  24. I think so mate, stobbarts come with shirt and tie but no shovel
  25. Telegraph poles
