  1. Same here thats why as a qualified electrician and apprentice served engineer I am now cutting up timber for logs. No waiting 3 months for payment, no reams of H&S crap to wade through, no endless quotes to write, No corporates going bust on me, Very little pointless legislation to deal with, I could go on for hours but wont. We are only here for a short time enjoy what you do, money is not everything
  2. If I have a good year and earn 100 k I owe the tax office 40k if in month eleven I drop a b*****k and lose the lot I dont owe anything its called enterprise . If you strangle it the country goes down the toilet. I dont expect to get a tax bill for £1000 cos I earnt £4000 in month one. SWB alot of what you are saying is correct I have been having problems with this cis rubbish for at least 7 years. They have never reduced my bill by 20% on the labour only they have taken it of the whole invoice including the supply of the generator. I hope this makes sense and not to aggressive I am a bit drunk
  3. I would say keep your day job and build it slowly. Crazy times at the moment makes the log business better than it is. A cheap stand alone splitter would be good if it came cheap enough tractor mount would be a pain my hakki lives on one of my tractors.
  4. The only reception I can get at home is Vodaphone so could be off to Asda.
  5. Its a 5 tonne ram but because the machine has two rams it has a chain and a sprocket. Normally the load on the sprocket is just to return the other ram and oil back to tank. Because it was frozen it ripped the 4 12mm bolts out and pulled the sprocket up the bed frame. Used a tin of windscreen deicer this morning to make sure it did not happen again. Because the frost and sawdust build up under ram it could happen after a short break.
  6. Stripped sat afternoon repaired and rebuilt sunday now working got pics if anyone needs them. Problem caused by splitting ram freezeing to frame. Makes a big mess underneath:scared1:
  7. Thanks for the tip I will do it. The reason we were billeting was lack of covered space so it will knock that advantage on the head. I had a load of timber in and most of it was over 12" we now steer our supplier towards smaller stuff. It may pay me to ring and leave till winter and split into delivery trailer. We were getting more timber by taking big stuff due to less air space but i think your better with less wood and less work ?
  8. You cant do that just spent 8k on a machine to do that
  9. I bought a 23 year old 110 tipper end of the summer didnt really need it couldnt justify it wife moaned like mad. Its mega slow does `15 mpg and its diesel has 1 inch gaps around the doors but when loaded goes anywhere. On the road at least 6 hours a day for the last two weeks. Sending wife out to polish it
  10. I dont think so we went vat more than ten years ago and seem to remember you can claim for previous large purchases cos you bought them for future use . A good incentive to do it but make sure its good for u . If you do domestic tree work it could be bad news. If you buy new kit and mostly vat reg companies and a bit of firewood you could be onto a winner.
  11. I have done building jobs round the house bought 1.5 tonnes loose done the job used half of it and tried to lose the rest in abuilders bag couldnt get it in the bag. Tonne bags are a right rip off allround.
  12. Just bought a kindlet good service so far. Part of the reason our processor is so old spent the dosh on a kindlet Spent £60 with another company not sure if in Scotland was amazed at attitude and poor service. Spent a large part of the summer billeting with vertical splitter thought it was hard work but ideal if covered storage is full. The billets seem to foul our hakki more as they are dry and brittle also mountains of saw dust.
  13. I could be wrong about this not had time to look into it. The way I look at it if I go bancrupt they can take a few bricks from my house if I was limited they could kiss my A@@e. There must be a cheap simple register they can access only works on ltds . At least twice in the last 6 months I have been refused an acct on the basis of being sole trader. Its not a problem for me not trying to brag but I dont want credit I want discounts. I have 15k to use on my credit card if they wont give me an acct or take cards stuff em. Plenty of other suppliers out there.
  14. M large tree have been spot on with us cant fault them. Its shame they are so far away. we do get alot of timber over 12" but am thinking dice it and use our decent vertical splitter. I split a double load the other day in 40 minutes I would think 20 mins to dice it. It takes 40 mins on our 2x and I need to cut that in half ( to old and knackered to lift 8fts all day )
  15. My ageing Hakki Pilki 2x has been churning out logs like mad and I was warming to its shortcomings when. Bang I started it up, one of the splitters was frozen and the machine ripped itself to bits. I dont think this could happen on the machines with a single ram. Any advice do i bodge it back together or cut my losses and buy another new one quick. The machine was 4 when i bought it and I think it had some serious use then now 9 years old. I was thinking of a bigger machine but then I need log deck to load large timber more forklifts noise damage to ground etc . 8k for a 370mm machine may be the way to go?
  16. I have been on holiday to Cornwall does not suprise me. I think if you try to smack some of the arborist on here in the mouth you could be in for a surprise. Most cabstars take about 2cu meters which should be £145 - £160 A hilux 1.4 cu meters ish £120 If people are too tight to pay it let them sit in the cold and count their money. I think you need £80 a cu + to make a living even in Cornwall.
  17. A good idea but may be a days work experience is better. I can tell by lunch time if someone is going to be invited back the next day. You dont want to slave for a week for nothing.
  18. Ltd or sole trader you can earn up to around 51/2 k ea tax free ea year. If your wife does not work for you and is at home with the kids she did once hold the door open so you could load your saws so you paid her 5k for that. Getting back to the credit check I may have picked up a black mark somewhere without knowing it so need to check my credit reference. I get accts rejected because we are not ltd. Not from small companies but large corps etc. I dont have debts or loans.
  19. I think its too late for you dean and too far away but I have a trade acct with Yuasa my LC uses a 335 and a 334 cost to me £47 + vat ea top quality premium batteries. They have put prices up this week but in the summer we get offers on batteries. A 655 is about £70 a 643 £60. If anyone is nearby and needs batteries let me know and will order in.
  20. did you stop at traffic lights near a site with caravans and transits sign written with facias and soffits 10% off.
  21. I am still sole trader. I tend to play safe so at the moment dont feel the need to limit my liability. If you have a financial risky idea it would pay. Also no one has mentioned getting credit accts. I am squeaky clean and have been in business since 92 but now find nearly impossible to open trade accts, anyone else finding this ?. If you are ltd they can do a credit check in minutes sole trader costs more money and takes for ever
  22. given the choice at the moment beech ash I go for the hawthorn every time.
  23. First thing to do is find someone honest and reliable to service and maintain the kit. The ones I have met so far seem bitter and twisted and happy to lighten your wallet of any savings you may have made.
  24. No never owned one my wife has a huge stock of liqidated car spares. The grills only make about £20 on ebay not worth the hassle off packing. I think we worked out its for a 55 plate.
