  1. What would you buy to pull 15 -18 tonne of trailer. Bearing in mind I am about to spend 5k on trailer i will be skint for a while. I only need about 300 tonnes of cord at the moment possibly more in the future.
  2. I think I saw that on ebay about 6 months ago
  3. Thats an interesting find. About £3000 but much cheaper than a 150 hp tractor with air. I am looking for something with 4 wheel drive simple without to many electronics would be good. Wont be used for anything else and could sit around for weeks.
  4. I am having a crane trailer built from a brick trailer. I have gone the air brake route for safety and to meet legislation in the future. I hope to hire a tractor now and again as cost of tractor with air will be huge. Could there be the possibility of adding air to an old ford tractor for the occasional local job.
  5. We had transits for years until I bought a new 1995 smiley front. 16 faults which never got sorted. Vowed to Ford dealer would not buy again while I had a whole in my bottom ( or words to that effect ) and have stayed true to my word. Sounds like they have got worse if thats possible. I would by any other make before I bought a Ford again and most of the others have there faults.
  6. There is a big ford on ebay he has a big crane trailer as well
  7. Thanks for letting me know I found that a day or so ago will try and sort it now:thumbup1:
  8. Both open and burners. We often get recommended by the local wood burner store but they are so anal about the wood being 20% . The only way to work it is people buying their firewood a year in advance. If you buy cord a year in advance pay someone to cut it up then pay rent and storage for 9 months and interest on the loan there simply is nothing left in the pot. Unless you have the ideal premises sitting doing nothing it simply is not scaleable. I have someone who will load an arctic with 1 cu metre bags for £50 a bag in vat. Another merchant delivers tipped loads 3cu for £160. You may get £130 a cu in some areas in Jan feb when everyone has run out after a hard winter but u wont get that in September. I enjoy my log business but only do it 1-2 days a week. If I were u do the same seems a shame to take your time away from a profitable core business. There is a saying the only thing you get out of selling logs is a bad back
  9. At £130 a cube it would be cheaper to go and buy nets. People dont realise how little wood is in a cubic metre. Talk to Log barron on here he does nets whole sale and is taking orders now for next year.
  10. £80 a cube round here and I would say 30% of callers go elsewhere for cheap wet stuff.
  11. Thinking about it go with your original idea buy in 30 tonnes of cord. Keep an accurate record of time and expences. If its not dampened your enthusiasm you will have learnt alot buy in more. One thing I have found is I could live without my processor some days I could gladly run it over with the Jcb. I could not live without a decent overhead splitter.
  12. They were making a good living and will be if you can lift the price up to cover the materials. Unfortunately not round here.
  13. I dont think you will sell much between now and October then you will sell 30 tonne a week. Get 300 tonnes done through a used processor for £3000 now or more if you can spare the money and cash flow. 30 tonnes will be a drop in the ocean with the amount of contacts u say u have.
  14. I would stick a sykes pickervant coolant pressure tester on it when cold. Pressurise to cap pressure or 6 psi if not sure. Often you will get a nice dribble and find other leaks before risk a nice new gasket.
  15. Sorry I was not very clear its the price of a tonne of green beech cord wood delivered in. 5 years ago we were paying £24 + Vat. Last autumn £42 now have price of £52 by next winter i am sure they will put another £10 on it £62 + vat = £74.40. We sell logs by the cubic metre loose loaded and 1tonne of green beech turns into 1.5 cubic metres. I am putting a large crane trailer on the road in the next few months so we can get the timber in when we need it.
  16. I would say if you have referals from 4000 installs leave logs well alone. Buying cord to turn into dry logs is going to be alot of work for little profit. Things will now go quiet and sales will dry up so no rush to build a kiln if you are determined to do logs just dry it in the sun you have 6 months to do it. If you are determined to use a kiln what about an iso container painted black left in the sun all day. Solar panels to run vent fans. I have a black container and the temperature is unbeliveable in summer. Or as someone has said a poly tunnel. The only way to make money out of logs is to educate the public into taking their wood now for next year and getting a good supply of free timber. Other wise at £75 a tonne 3/4 of your turnover will go in expenses. Just my view but good luck with what you intend doing.
  17. You can register with a service that stops cold callers after a few weeks if they call or fax you they will get fined by ofcom. No more parasites
  18. Its an american thing. If you deliver logs and ask if they want firelighters for a pound and kindling they will now sternly say NO. Then go down Tesco and pay 3 times as much. Pressure selling helps no one. It all started with would you like to go supersize with that.
  19. And you can pop to euro disney on a wim and not get back ache
  20. If you have not found it by August your not going to if you do what good is it to you. Think about it
  21. No idea what your budget is but we bought a couple of mint 20ft containers for £800 ea used some nice trusses destined for the kindlet and bought some used 100mm thick insulated fridge sides steel sheet both sides. I have alot of 5m sheets left if you need some.
  22. Give tim or David a ring at Devizes trailers best price I can find normally and they have an aircraft hanger full of trailers in stock.
  23. I would stick with what you have a thinner bar and you will need to sharpen more often and I find they clog with saw dust and jam. If you really want to waste less wood you will need a saw bench with tct blade. I measured the cut once on a .325 blade and it was 8mm but dont worry it still only works out at 3% on a ten inch log.
  24. I am really poor at this but will have a go. All the bark has fallen off so could be beech. If it did not look so red I would almost say willow if its really light and is stringy when split otherwise dont hav a clue
