  1. Thanks for the tip I did not realise JCB had an auction. I own the land but am planning to sell for devolopment within 4 years so will be on the move. I will need a surface that is really hard as I use a bobcat alot and it tears everything to bits. I am going to go with rowans idea of concrete sleepers as I can move them or take them with me. I have heard alot of moans about the small teles and a 526with 4 wheel steer is more manouverable than our mid 80's 525 also we do push the limits on lift cap regularly with the generators ( we dont wear the rear tyres out ) I am thinking late 90's low hrs mint condition for about 11k
  2. Sorry to see that sam is it covered by insurance or is it a self repair job.
  3. I did that a few years ago I decided best to replaster 2 months before lighting stove next time.
  4. I like the idea of the room seal kit. If you ever go up on the roof when your stove is off and feel the amount of central heating comming out the chimney it will frighten you
  5. Dont smash them up I can give them away with logs I know what you mean I bought a new stove a year ago for the office made by arda with a secondary burn wigit thingy and the difference is amazing the old stove was a waste of time and would eat 15 or 20 logs a day. New stove 5 logs and we have to leave the door to the yard open.
  6. We have a mountain of bone dry planned softwood we are turning into kindling we wont run out but may struggle to keep up with orders as cold weather hits. With a bit of notice we will do our best to deliver on time. Hope your log sales are going well and merry christmas to all our customers if we dont see you again before christmas.
  7. This also makes sense as softwood often leaves a very light fluffy ash which could easily be drawn up the chimney. self cleaning ash pan with softwood then
  8. I have a cheap racor filter with electric pump. I stick a pipe in all my tanks and sometimes its alarming how much water I am buying. I have a plastic heating oil tank new 8 years ago I took 30 litres of water out of it a few months ago.
  9. Beech maybe a hardwood but its soft as they go if you know what I mean. Out of all the woods to burn Beech is my favorite by miles I treat all my customers to the ash and oak.
  10. We just sold our int 684 which has run our processor for 6 years without missing a beat. An adaptor on the 1000 pto it sipped the fuel running the engine at 1200 rpm. I would not gear a diesel engine down so its running at 480 rpm you will get terrible slobbering.
  11. red diesel delivered before october is summer grade had same problem last year.
  12. Hi Jon in 3 days I have serviced a generator in Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle home now knackered not in the mood for delivering logs we are staying at edenvale farm saturday week.
  13. Why would you buy logs in advance. Thats what log sellers do buy cord 2 years in advance then cut i up 9 months before its needed then wait another 3 months for the cheap crap to run out. Then the customer can realise at 4pm christmas eve he only has 4 logs left.
  14. I can see what both sides are saying but nicks way makes sense as he is not transporting water and your not paying for it. It takes a bit of trust on both sides but from what I have seen in the posts nick delivers a good load. Sometimes you may be a little up sometimes a little down but firewood is not an exact science and if its not green it gets you slightly ahead of the game.
  15. Nice looking cord most of which would go through a 12" processor. A 3rd of the load is not 20" and another 3rd of the load 2" sticks. Makes me wish I still did logs only joking.
  16. I think when buying cord you need to trust the person your buying from not to pull a fast one I am more interested in buying volume rather than 4 tonnes of water. From seeing Nick Channers previous posts I would trust him to deliver me a good load of timber if I was still in the game. If I move premises and can get an arctic in and you have some nick I will get some large butts of softwood of you in the future.
  17. I think I see a nice ex arable one owner machine on ebay this week think it was 525 with equal size wheels looked very tidy.
  18. Tony good ideas I did a year or so back put a new seat in and sort some of the electrics. The machine is physically too big for the ground I have left. It should make about 4k so If I add 6k to it will get a much better machine. The old girl I have has been very loyal and capable so will be sad if it does go. Maybe I will sell a bit more junk and when the logs have gone there will be alot more room.
  19. Good points nick I would be happier spending 7-10k maybe I should look harder for something a bit cleaner.
  20. We are a foot deep in mud are you thinking they are only as capable as a buggyscopic. A buggyscopic would be a waste of time here. our 4x4 525 has no problems got me thinking now
  21. I think they changed the rules back recently from 100% depreciation to 50%. I dont think there is any difference between new and used but I may easily be completely wrong. If you replace kit every year its more tax efficent but heavier on depreciation. Also if the allowance is higher in the first year and you dont have a good year your tax will be at 25% rather than 50% so sometimes it pays to spread it over a few years.
  22. Little machine with good lift capacity
  23. Good advice never occured to me it would hold its money I just assumed it would drop 10k once it had got muddy then I would spread the drop over 10 years. I never gave a thought to road use or towing I tried to insure our current one with NFU 10 years ago and it was £1100 a year road use and £1100 to insure while lifting. I did hear coop would do it for £60 a year but never got that far. It would be useful to take onsite occasionally and as they only weigh 3500kg you would not need a huge lorry.
  24. I have just sold all my logging kit but need a decent telehandler. Everything we have seems to be used and u have to cope with the short commings. Our current telehandler the seats always wet and cab steamed up lights dont work things are leaking oil. Its permanently on the go some days and I fancy something like a jcb 527-50 or manitou 526 a compact machine. If we had it 10 years it would probably still be unmarked. who has spent 30k and regretted it and who has spent 30k and glad they bought new. I keep tracking little jcb's down for 24k with 2000 hrs on the clock and they look trashed.
  25. Leaflets is a good one . We used to mailshot selected customers but dont bother now because of the cost. We use a free paper based nr newbury called the oracle not sure if you can see it on line. A business card size ad is £30 and lasts a month we always get 7 new log customers and even find people keep it by the phone for 6 months. The guy who runs it I think targets value for money good honest, reliable, quality small businesses but we still manage to get in
