  1. Massive waste of taxpayers money. Spent billions so that we can watch OTHER PEOPLE exercising ! Millions of idiots sitting there improving their beer gut watching other people. If the same ammount had been spent on local sports facilities/ swimming pools etc everybody would have benefitted. As for that olympic torch ceremony invented by the Nazis for the 1936, the whole thing is a load of bollo
  2. used to be a Drilling Fluids Engineer (drilling rigs), also qualified as a stonemason.
  3. Eritrea, but I thought my great, great grandfather came from Somerset! although strangely enough I have just signed up for that Britains DNA project BritainsDNA
  4. Farmer plants heart-shaped meadow for late wife | Photo Gallery - Yahoo! News
  5. Divide into triangles. The area of any triangle (using any sides) is :- HALF BASE X HEIGHT
  6. I dont think that a council would buy that. The proposal is completly out of proportion to the acerage, or are you proposing to clearfell in one season and then move on?
  7. the chassis will probably crater before the engine.
  8. Hey man, dont take it personally, I have lots of American friends, in fact my daughter is over there at the moment. Its just the system.
  9. well the US did invent the dumb-ass "internet" messaging system (for military purposes), but it took the British scientist Tim Berners-Lee to convert it into the user friendly World Wide Web
  10. I strongly object to you trying to hijack my post by claiming it supports your neocon stace. The American right wing is always saying that it "wants the government off their backs". Well the fact is that we in the UK & the whole world want America off their back.
  11. WAKE UP This whole bill is just a smokescreen. Are you lot all so naiive as to believe the the government does NOT read them at the moment. Just look at the wording. All they are doing is to legally allow the UK to hack into everything. BUT under the current system they get the yanks to do it for them (so its "legal") At the end of the day its probably just a cost cutting excercise
  12. If we are talking disaster scenarios, then what about that old volcanic cone on Tenerife ? Every few thousand year it collapses down into the atlantic & causes a tsuami that wipes out the whole Caribean & the east coast of north america
  13. Did a six mile cross country run yesterday, but would probably have to swim it today.
  14. Well maybe the core does have a lifespan, but not for a few billion years, dont forget it gains heat from radioactive decay & from friction caused by drag from the gravity of the sun /moon I tend to agree with James Lovelock, that global warming is happening & its too late to do anything about it.
  15. Somewhere I remember seeing a design for a homemade "rocket" style stove built out of a couple of old cans. There is also something similar made out of Titaniun.
  16. Lot of info on hundreds of posts on the I forge iron website Blacksmithing Forum | I Forge Iron Lot of confusing terminology about "damascus steel" The original genuine Damascus steel was indeed made in Damascus using iron ingots from India which had certain critical elements alloyed into them. The spectacular banding & strength was produced by special heat treatment iusing techniques now lost. Modern "damascus" is produced by "pattern welding", repeated forging & folding over of alternating layers of steel of varying compositions. A technique also used on AngloSaxon swords.
  17. A terrifying event, glad she came through ok. I became a donor after my wife was in hospital for 2 months with our daughter due to pre-eclampsia & SLE caused her kidneys to malfunction & lost blood protein, so needed a transfusion every day. A successful emergency caesarian at 7 months & 23 years later she is ok. On blood types, remember that the classification consists of adding factors ie. everybody has the "o" , so that everybody can receive O negative blood. "A" blood can receive "O" & "A" "A Positive" can receive "O", "O Positive" and "A Positive" and so on. I am O Positive, so about 60% of the population can have my blood, as everybody has "O" & about 60% have Rhesus Positive in various combinations.
  18. Raised beds have transformed veg growing in my plot on heavy weald clay. Large quantities of composted woodchip have worked wonders when mixed with the clay. Best to mix the woodchip/sawdust with grass cuttings (or other high nitrogen sources such as pee, dead rabbits, squirells stc). It must be rotted untill it looks like soil & you can no longer see wood. Adding lime/chalk/limestone will help if the soil is too acid. Compost any green material (including kitchen vegetable waste) you can get hold of, mix it with "browns" such as cardboard of wood chip as above.
  19. Beech may appear to live on chalk soils, but they have very shallow roots & are in fact "thriving" in the top few inches of organic rich acid or neutral soil.
  20. Fact is that the British army has been defeated three times in Afghanistan. The first time in 1841 about 4,500 troops plus over 12,000 civillians were massacred as they retreated from Kabul. We are now heading for the fourth defeat. Do the politicians never learn ??
  21. Dave Rossney at Esus Forestry runs first class courses, I would not worry about it.
  22. Chain oil has the same spec as gear oil
  23. Yeah, but maybe he had a bad childhood there. cos he moved to Crowborough Sussex, where there is a statue of him.
  24. I was simply correcting Robs error. Nowhere do I say that it wont dry, but there is little doubt that given similar conditions wood is likely to dry quicker when it is warmer.
