  1. wow,Id bet that tree is a real conversation piece.
  2. Hey atree would you say that they chip easily? Just inquring here cause were looking at replacing the shanks of our steels with alloys or Titaniums.lol
  3. Its not illegal in NZ but were not allowed to attach to the hook.We attach to the wire rope above the ball, usually with a shackle that has a wired bolt.
  4. Hi Michelle. We have a small range of toys at work for ropeing onto the next tree or onto long limbs of the same tree. *We have a throwline and ball on an old trout fishing reel that has a snap hook on it, to attach to our harnesses, we can take it up with us.If you throw it over a limb that is level or slightly above you and let the ball hang about 1/2 metre, get it swinging toward you, then tug back sharply on the line, the throwball will come flying back to you.Its good for about 10-15 metres with practice.I think that this may be similar to what you refered to as the slingshot. *We have 3 toys(tools) that you can attach to a rope,a light 3 pronged grapple(homemade),a steel hook with an eye(the eye must be like on a fish hook to work). With these 2,when you get them over a limb and dangling close to the rope ,it is then easy to hook them back around your rope and pull tight. You could then pull yourself over using a handled ascender. To disegage these two you need only to shake the rope. The other is a large catspaw which has a spliced eye.If there is a suitable tight crotch available to jam the catspaw in by pulling it tight then you could also pull yourself over on that. *As already metioned,we also have a telescoping pole with a hook on the end for roping over limbs but it is used mostly for roping around single trees. *If your interested, give me a call and I will loan you a cd called Working Climber by G Beranek. He has some neat tricks for this.
  5. Looks like a very tidy ropewalker there Rob.Very nice gear allround too.Looks like your having fun.I really like this system and I would encourage anyone else to try it out.Its relatively cheap. It works well. Its fun.No changeovers required,no ascender backups required.Easy to get used to.Im converted.
  6. I'd be interested to hear back from those of you that use theses - what do you think of them? Cheers James Ive used that same type for a few yrs.I prefer glasses but if its a hot and sweaty job and I dont want to fog up glasses or wear a visor,I use the flys eyes.I must admit that you look better in them than me.
  7. My first was a 1955 Chev Belair. That was 35 yrs ago when NZ was full of Yank Tanks and British Bikes.
  8. That 17 tonner looks really handy too.A bucket and/or a seperate crane winch.
  9. I have never climbed one,I have only pruned them using a polesaw from the ground or from an EWP.They are my least favourite palms to work on.
  10. How I fell them is 40-50% scarf. Then bore cut from the front through to the back, level with the bottom of scarf, bar width.Put in wedge and hammer in.Then backcut with the step being about a matchbox height above the wedge in the back.I find this keeps them from closing up on the bar.
  11. Been using this system for about 6wks now,it makes Ddrt fun.Learnt it from Gerry Beraneks CDs also. Our only variation is that we use cmi foot ascenders instead of Petzels.I enjoy it.
  12. Do you know how many tons that jack is?
  13. Im a humble Council employee and this is what the locals rates buy for arborists Buckingham Versatile steel core lanyard or grillon or 16mm with distel Samson Bluestreak(old),Yale XTC(new),various lengths. Hitchclimbers, micros, lockjack sport, various splittails and prussic rope. Gecko alloys(pole) or Buck steels(tree) Various ascenders and descenders and rope grabs
  14. Im impressed.I would have loved to have seen the magnum & winch, hint.
  15. Sorry Michelle,no cigar.I checked it out and found out that Siberian and Chinese Elms are not one and the same.
  16. possibly diaphrams and springs in carb(carb kit),really hard to visually assess them or needle valve in carb(carb kit). Other possibilities are fuel pickup filter in gas tank and rubber hoses fuel system with a small hole.Let us know what finally fixes it,cheers.
  17. Haha you got me stumped now,the answer I was looking for was Chinese or Lacebark Elm but they might also be called Siberian Elm,I will have to check up on that now.
  18. The first things I would look at are 1 Make sure throttle valve fully opens. 2 Low and High speed mixture adjustments.(first, your 2 stroke mix) 3 Check muffler is not coked up or air filter is not clogged(run without filter) 4 Rings(compression) 5 Is there a lower ratio sprocket available(if you are running a longish bar),or a higher ratio sprocket, which will increase chain speed at the cost of torque.(if you are running a shortish bar)
  19. I will post 5m of 10mm and 5m of 8mm on Sat.OK

  20. sorry drew I dont even know when or where it is,but if you let me know then Ill make a point to drop by and enjoy the day, cheers

  21. no need for the junk, that was easy for me because I live in their endemic native area.LOL
  22. looks like your coming 2nd at the mo.Can you vote more than once?
  23. too right T M,my mate is real old school.55yrs old.No spikes(mind you I grabbed the geckos fast, leaving only the Buck steels). One hand use. Single tie in.Im surprised he bothered with a rope,he free climbs very often.Prussic and both ends of rope.We have all the gear, but after 40yrs of doing this with zero lost time accidents I dont get critical of his ways. From now on though, out of respect for him I will only post pics of myself at work.
  24. I took a couple of pics of my co worker taking a leader off a Mac today,It was to change the trees weight distribution for a fell tomorrow. The tree failed QTRA and TRU(root decay).54 Macs in this Park,15 Fells(11 to go) and a lot of pruning etc.
  25. Even though Ive only been using a lockjack sport for a week and Im loving it,Id like to try a unicender SRT.What about the rest of you, keen to do something new or are you content?
