  1. The trouble is it was I spoke with the guy at length And he agreed a lot and basically said he would leave me to do what was best...Until halfway through the day! Give me takedowns and Connifer topping any day!
  2. I'm happy to do an easy day and let me Groundy climb for £350 but usually a fair bit more
  3. It's often the simple things, the amount of times I've been swearing at machine or vehicle On The drive and my mum has made a simple suggestion such as what you've described, only for me to go along with it and it fix the 'complex' fault.
  4. That's awful trouble with these fat lazy won't leave the cab style of machine drivers, quite common for these jump ties to not worry about the safety pin on a quick hitch, it's so prevalent the manufacturers should all use the hydraulic remote system like the CATs have so much better hydraulic jaw locks the bucket it in and can be opened or closed at the flick of a switch in the cab.
  5. Reminds me of a Beech reduction I did a few weeks back, was relatively short for a beech at about 45ft ish maybe a little rebut the canopy started from the very bottom, after the chat I had with the customer about doing a good job and his concerns about not wanting to kill the tree I expected him to be very impressed by my masterful silky target pruning efforts to achieve a 30% reduction. Throughout the first half the group dies checked with him that it was fine the when about half the tree was done ( the portion facing his side) and I was about to start going over the top, he said the tops needed to come down to where the sides currently were then the sides cutback even harder to match! I could have gone home and left the job at this point I was so angry after bit of discussion I had the 201t sent up and savaged the lot, the customer loved it. We took two brimmed loads of chip away in the landy, had the job been done correctly I expected about 1/2 a load . I've drawn the conclusion that it's nearly impossible to be allowed to carry out a good quality reduction, unless it's a TPO job and you can use that to justify your work.
  6. My regular guy gets £80 but generally more if the day is late etc.but all ground workers are not equal, mine is very good and also my best friend however, he has B+E and drives the vehicles well, can do a little climbing always very polite and extremely resourceful and mechanically minded, moans loads but always comes through, if I make it to getting established he'll be on good money ! Furthermore after reading Marks post I realise all the other things I take for granted until the odd day when he is in available he knows how to set up a proper rigging kit and how to manage the ropes reminisce shock loading and so on, I can also send him out with the truck and grinder to crack on with a days grinding on his own or other ground based jobs with no worries. Value you're Groundy as when you hire in another and they don't know how to do things the way you like you'll realise how much you miss/needed your previous one !
  7. You'll grab yourself a nice 935i for that money, I paid £4150 for mine 9x13" in feed 50hp, solid as you like. I've not had very few problems with it and the few i have had were easy to fix at home, bar sorting out the no stress which it didn't have when I bought it which Vermeer did same day when we brought it up and had all parts on the shelf! I won't be changing chippers any time soon. Also it was perfectly usable without the stress control as being such a beast it will chip up to around 6" without slowing at all.
  8. Check all the sensor plugs, clean contacts on them etc.
  9. I love my L200, but when the Ifor's brimmed I'm hitching it up to the Defender every time
  10. Very nice, shame we never have the kind of space available here to even consider getting jobs done like that.
  11. Shame, good excuse to just shove some pipe in there and reap the rewards of having no cat though :-)
  12. Thanks for the nice replies, I just bought apple pruner last week too Stevie! Maybe I'll give it a go next time
  13. Hello, I am in need of a groundy or labourer in Medway, Kent for a few days this coming week, let me know if your available in this thread by pm, Or email : [email protected] Or preferably by phone on 07505134004 Thanks, Bill
  14. Do the short courses, for in depth knowledge just read some books.
  15. Pm me , I may have a few days for you nothing permanent though
  16. I give nearly all of mine away to local allotments, a few local land owners with horses take a fair bit and some small holders etc. occasionally I get to sel a load but it doesn't happen often
  17. I'm finding it a nightmare to come by a good 2nd Groundy or even a half decent labourer in the area too.
  18. Nice bit of firewood though :-) --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?mbcky2
  19. The big lump on the deck and a bit of still disc cutter action removing some ore terrible old wire bracing, left over from the slight crown lift we went back to do today, the wire was totally concluded and wouldn't come out so had to be cut off at the top end, the tree is in terrible condition and hopefully we'll be taking it down soon as I'd say it's a question of when not if another huge limb snaps out. I found a house brick and all sorts of other dodgy stuff in the union where e big piece had snapped out and some nasty cavities and cracks within the pieces still standing and one of the other mail leaders, not good!
  20. --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?uv3cp2
  21. Started with my groundy cutting the lowest bits from the ground, theming to up and knocked some lumps off. Then swung it round and down to the desired landing with two lowering points and a tag line all came off nice and trouble free with no dramas thankfully.
  22. Possibly! ;-) I do as much as I can with my 201 as I like how manageable they are, but then swapped straight to 441 with 25" bar --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?xmxknx
  23. Iwouldnalways be 5 mins early n smiling for £180 a day as a stubby climber, ha! I get 150 + depending in job n client for climbing do a better deal for one guy who is kind enough to give me days whenever I want them.
