    Jokes???

Likewise - exactly. Go told to shut up from the next room so she doesn't miss any East-flippin-enders. Just brilliant but so simple when you think about it.
  4. Shot...at the roadside... couldn't have been whacked by a vehicle could he and some kind soul's put him out of his misery? I've often thought how I'd deal with a mortally wounded large animal I'd hit; finish it off with my bosun's pocketknife (my Navara doesn't have a gun rack)?! I'd give it a darned good go - anything's better than just leaving it writhing.
  5. A dead/dying tree produces the best wood for turners due to the slow drying of the wood so if yours is dying and not dead I'd guess you've got A1 turning wood.
  6. The branches are horrible to handle. If you're thinking of spiking you may find that the thick bark comes off in plates due to shrinkage of the dying wood underneath; you may have trouble gripping in other words. The wood; cut between the whorls and sell it to turners but not the lowest rings; the eyes are too small. Some seem to think that the wood's hard to cut but I've had no trouble as long as it's in reasonable condition. I think that once you've worked out a way of handling the branches (not your job perhaps!) you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. Best of luck.
  7. Does that apply equally to Deodar David? If so I'll put off a customer till the spring (which won't be a problem). Thanks, Jon
  8. It's 5 mins from M25 J6 - M-way all the way!
  9. I'd be surprise if the plant can't live with the scale but perhaps this'll help. Euonymus Scale Fact Sheet -- Woody Ornamental Integrated Pest Management at Penn State
  10. There's a certain Mr Leach on here who will be drooling into his soup when he sees that. If you have the patience let the turners at it; e-mail a few clubs if you don't know any. Good luck, Jon
  11. Leave it as it is; airflow is everything, even when things get damp.
  12. Why not live with the weight and get a 5-ton machine that will not break and with which you'll be able to pull out the odd stump too? Got mine off the bay for £50 and that included 100' of rope but I doubt you'd find such a bargain now. True Tirfor or Griphoist brands seem to be the most highly rated; I've seen some negative opinions here of the contemporary stuff compared to them.
  13. I was thinking scale too. But is it a problem? Euonymus is such resilient stuff I would be surprised if it is. Also the scale doesn't worry about salt so is also resilient, hiding inside its armour coat. Isn't leaving it a viable option?
  14. When you start pulling the stems off work from the thick end and peel towards the tips; do it the other way round and you'll be there for a week breaking off 6" lengths. Pull down and out; the stems are brittle so will snap if you bend them to 90 degrees. Sorted then; home for tea.
  15. A friend is a member of an archery club that's on the move to East Molesey. They've got the land but it's overgrown with long grass, brambles etc. Guesstimated size is 150m x 40m at its widest tapering to a point. I haven't even seen it myself I'm afraid but if anyone with a Kubota-type tractor and mower is interested pm me and I'll put you in touch with the client. There could be more work later as there is talk of grading some of it and building an earth bank one end. Thanks, Jon
  16. If you need help disposing of it I can assist (re turning). I'm in Caterham. Jon
  17. As previously shown on the 'Beech with ganoderma' thread this one near Horsham went bump in the night and made a sleeping maiden 150+ yards away jump out of bed in fright! Note my phone in the middle of pic1. The lad is a fag paper short of 6', closer to me and further from the tree than seems to be the case at first glance.
  18. I had exactly the same thought; some funny descriptions and gradings in there. 'Yew is 'OK'?! It burns hot, hot, hot and long.
  19. I've been brought up on 'ash and holly are the two woods you can burn green'. Doesn't mean it's a good idea, just that you can do it.
  20. Jon, it's horrible but you did the right thing: you'd have done worse not doing it. Feeling for you but life goes on mate. All the best for the future, Jon (bloody wet Surrey)
  21. He's sold some previously too but they made more money: perhaps he's running out of stickerless tree surgeons!
  22. If you gained work on the strength of being C&G and NPTC qualified when you weren't then YOU would technically be breaking the law (prove it though) but advertising stickers can't be illegal. The guy sells mainly arb stuff and does say in the listing 'CS holders only please'. Perhaps he demands to see tickets before he releases the stickers...? He doesn't say so but he may. In that case it would be like a retailer viewing a CS38 cert before releasing a tophandled saw.
