  1. I know a gent who turns that lives in Teddington. He can't slice up something that large - he'd need others to do that - but he may be interested in some of the timber. Want me to put him in touch? I'd need contact details for you if so (PM is fine) as I'm off on holiday 5am Monday. Jon
  2. ...especially if the sun's on the skin that meets the sap.
  3. Having seen the reaction of the one I mentioned I say go for the chop if retention is insisted upon but from your description of the thing's location perhaps it just isn't appropriate to the location and would be better removed. Not only is the regrowth vigorous but it's whippy and a strong wind is going to have it tapping on the French windows - literally.
  4. I think I remember a family friend with Dip Hort Kew after his name performing a sensitive 50% reduction around now. The tree suffered not a jot; go for it.

    Jays

Here in East Surrey jays have done well this year; I've never seen so many.
  6. The party line is yes; all income must be declared. Now, do you have a question for the real world?!
  7. Ta for the info; I'll cross it off the list.
  8. A bit of a detour for you Al but sort of on the way home... try River Lane, Fetcham. If you can find a phone number they like advance notice (so they told me). Jon
  9. Great find: you must have been in mature oak wood...?
  10. Thirded re Phaeolus. I've encountered it recently in a large Black Pine - now three bare stems @~15' - and a large larch that's suffered a huge tearout due to brown cubical rot about 20' from the ground. The Pine was picus tested and the recommendation was 'immediate heavy reduction or removal'. Phaeolus is not good news I'm afraid.
  11. Fair point and mine wasn't measured but I'll bet you it was at least 1.75 cube; the extra .25 wouldn't be an issue. For the benefit of the OP the main consideration is volume, not weight.
  12. Not a problem Beau: this one's not a tipper - not a single cab even. Jon
  13. ...it's like wearing heavyweight jeans; I was so impressed I bought a second pair straightaway.
  14. You must have a most beetle friendly stockpile Steve; good on ya!
  15. They're often on the peanut feeders and have recently been enjoying the seedheads of Geranium phaeum too. But got stuck...?! Your meece obviously can't jump!
  16. Surely until you've delivered the firewood and got the dosh in your hands it remains yours and so insurance for 'carriage of own goods' applies...?
  17. Just their small pedestrian stumpy for a dozen stumps on a large rockery (tiers, so limited flat ground per stump). But the 13hp Carlton is a very good machine for its size. I was impressed with how far I could bury the nose.
  18. A new OP customer here; v happy with the machine and the service (Burgess Hill branch). Thanks chaps. Jon
  19. If you mean the small green stuff the answer is that any chipper will deal with it if you put it through with sticks or branches. Chippers are designed to deal with wood; if you want to shred green material you need a shredder. Sounds picky but they are different machines for different purposes. I can vouch that the Treebusta is a fine machine.
  20. Gutted for you mate; really bad news and as if there was ever a good time for it to happen it comes on top of your other woes. Take a deep breath and pick yourself up; best of luck.
  21. Big ouch but your postcode explains that as much as God's appointee on Earth. But that's a lot for someone old enough to qualify as a 'responsible' driver.
  22. Magnolias do prefer slightly acidic soil but they are surface rooting. However, after 30 years perhaps even the relatively shallow roots have hit chalk. The client could try mulching I suppose, maybe with ericaceous compost mixed in but if that does help it's going to have to be the start of a maintained regime.
  23. Try Direct Line of all people: they do van insurance separately from car insurance.
