Some clearance was done around a sheduled ancient monument about three years ago and evidently the stumps were treated with neat glyphosate. The dieback of this oak coincided with that. Can one assume that, from root grafts, the poison was translocated? The dead top was extremely brittle but the lower crown had responded with epicormic shoots and strangely shaped leaves. The 'town park' mentality suggested felling but working with the ranger service we opted to fracture prune. Only time will tell.

That's one hell of a length. Surely it's not going to be an unsupported span? If it is supported then can't they splice/joint two shorter lengths?

Not sure you can keep the smell of coal tars a secret:001_smile: As I remember the Bray's emulsion was a copy of Armillatox and that also was described as a cure all. Reminds me of the Medicine Shows of the wild west...yee haa

Three strand and then multiplait. Three knot system until some bright spark came up with prussik loop. The 3 knot system made you take shortcuts as it meant retying every time you changed position so a fair bit of free climbing to save time and hassle with knots. Bushman bowsaws that bounced on the cuts and had your thumb:thumbdown: Working in Levi's, no helmets. Hemp and manilla lowering ropes and they were heavy! Matadors to pull and lift and pushed beyond their limit. Big fires of dead elm that burnt for days. Stihl 075, 404 chain with the rakers filed off that cut like hell and pulled your arms off. Real good times:thumbup:

I've only seen it used once. Was on a privet hedge that was dying. The hedge fully recovered and became a picture of health. There was a similar product marketed called 'Bray's Emulsion which was phenol based as, I think, is Armillatox?

Maybe outside of TO's jurisdiction. I'm pretty sure felling licences are checkable online and if SSSIs are affected then English Nature will be involved but you probably know that anyway. Good luck. -

I did a job once for a posh Chinese restaurant and whilst there they asked me if I could level up their chopping block in the kitchen. Did it in situ with a 440, chips everywhere. It was definitely syc or maple of some sort.

Been climbing since '79 so still a few old 'uns about. I remember causing quite a stir with my state of the art braided terylene line:001_smile: Zero stretch and so easy to prussic up.

I won't do reductions between March and August purely because of greenfinch nests. Trimming of well-clipped hedges I will. IME hedges can burn/dessicate in the winter during times of dry cold.

I think I'm more worried that people can't differentiate between banter and real life. Can we have a dog joke to balance things up:001_smile: The two black eyes is funny cos I only ever managed to get one punch in before she floored me:biggrin:

I don't know why some people just grind the tops off stumps. To me the machine works much more efficiently cutting into them rather than bouncing off the tops.
