  1. Not a crab, but i use a chain link joiner. They are in the ironmongery section of B&Q and are about £3 but if you go to a fastners factor they are pence. I'll post a pic but they are basically look like an oval maillon but about 1 1/2" long with a screw barrel gate if that makes sense? They are made to join light duty chain to other things like wall rings, extend / repair chain fences etc. Hope this makes sense!
  2. Hi All, nothing to do with trees, just after a bit of advice / opinions..... I sold a netbook PC on ebay last week. It was new, but never used. I'd taken it out of the box to start it and check all was ok before i put it away. It was an unwanted present. I stated all this on ebay as i like to be upfront. A guy bought it with Buy It Now and i delivered it to him (for free!!) locally and he paid cash on delivery, after he had started it and checked it out for himself. This afternoon, a week after i delivered it, he text me to say that the screen wasn't working and did i know it had a short battery life? I replied saying that everything was all ok when i delivered as he checked for himself, and i had no idea about battery life as I'd never really used the thing! He now wants a refund! My initial reaction was No, but the reason for this post is what would you have done / do? Not sure if am being a bit harsh or if he is a chancer. I have been stung on ebay before selling stuff so I am wary of claims like this. Any thoughs gratefully received! Ta, James
  3. I made mine out of plate, but i do a lot of fabrication work so it was fairly straight forward. I did download the plans - let me have your emai land i'll send them if you want? One important thing to bear in mind I found out when reasearching ideas for mine - it is illegal to fit a bull bar to a vehicle '56 plate or later. Be careful what your winch bumper looks like - if its anything more than just a mounting plate that sticks out, like the pics on this thread, your insurance company will not want to know about it. I'm only repeating what NFU told me but i did double check it online. Just useful to know about. Whether you stick to it is another matter
  4. Its 4250Kg train weight. Ie 3500kg + 750kg trailer: Towing trailers or caravans with vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes : Directgov - Motoring James
  5. Hi All, As title really! Not bothered wether it runs or not or if its got bar and chain. Can collect depending on distance. thanks for reading my post, James
  6. Hi, I did my Level 1 and worked offshore with it for a bit. There's a saying in the industry that "its the bus to work." ie you can abseil a structure but when you're there what can you do? Unless you've got a trade that can be taken across like welding / plating, sparky, NDT, comms tech then ur stuck with the fewer and more sought after opportunities like painting, electrical donkey work like running cables, bolting etc. Nothing wrong with that but more competition thats all. I loved doing it so I'd recommed it to anyone and you learn a fair bit that you can use in trees also. Offshore survival also helps get work. you need to do 1000 hours in 3 years to stay current or progress as far as i know without digging my log book out. Cehck out rope access training, rope access jobs and rope access equipment suppliers. Also covering rigging, inspection and ndt - really useful site (The arbtalk of the RA world ) although it does have a heavy offshore bias. Sorry for the rambling post James
  7. Thanks all for your replies. I'll follow up a few of the links and see how i get on. They are no good for day to day use but superb for small stumps in gardens with no access. If i could find one I thought about getting / making a cart for the stihl saw. They aren't as deadly / dangerous as they sound in my experience. Cheers for your help
  8. Hi all. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. A few years back i hired a stihl saw (TS400) with a stump grinder wheel on it which was really handy for small stumps. I'm now trying to buy the head to go on my stihl saw and not getting any joy Anyone know of anywhere thats makes / sells these things? The hire place i used has closed so no joy there. Cheers
  9. 140 psi Right and 135 psi left according to the machine the chriopractor tested me on yesterdY - coincedence! Apparently the average for a 30 year old male (me) is 121 psi in both. I've no idea how this relates to kg on bathroom scales but as i dont own any this is the only measurement i've got I imagine by 'average' they mean some pencil pusher?!
  10. There was a guy did a load for a guy i work for a few years back with a artic mounted tub grinder with a built in crane on it. They run out of norwich somewhere. Cant remember the name but their main business is supplying mulch and compost I'll try and find out. The guy had a "Uncle Fester" mural airbrushed on the side of his tractor unit if that rings any bells for anyone?
  11. Difficult one - the cut off is 3500kg as i understand it? And anything above has lower speed limits, the same as HGVs
  12. Thanks. Most trucks with chip boxes are - you've just got to keep an eye on things! Problem with the Ranger tipper is the rear overhang, so it always looks overloaded even if you arent Thats part of the reason for the rear doors. Out of sight out of mind and all that
  13. Hi All. Thought I'd post a pic of my truck now I've had the signs done. Had it about 18 months, bought it to replace a hilux. At the time it was the only small 4x4 tipper on the market then within 6 months they were all doing them Pleased with it all the same
  14. Fantastic saw. Power to weight ratio is brilliant. Its my all day ground saw as I've only got this saw and the 020 for climbing. I use it with a 13" bar - try it you'll like it - most of the time but have a 16 and 25 for it when i need them for bigger stuff. Obviously the key is the smallest bar that will do the job.
  15. I did 2 years as an abseiler offshore and all we used to use was screw gates. This is IRATA best practise. Apparently, the thinking is that they are more 'idiot proof' than auto locking ones. If the screw gate wont close the krab is knacered so bin it - simples! They dont come open at all as much as the 3 ways if they are done up right. Although I use 3 ways in tree work to comply. Just seen it from both sides as it were...
  16. The main reg is you need check valves on the boom hydraulics if you are using a man basket on a telehandler. In case a pipe bursts.
  17. Thanks mate I'll give em a look
  18. I'm using a Petzl vertex vent helmet at the moment which I'm really happy with but my question is does anyone use a headlight which doesnt interfere with the visor ie you dont have to have one or the other and the visor goes up and down ok? I dont want to change the helmet so thats not really and option but with the days getting shorter just wondered what everyone else does? I took visor off last year but hate getting poked in the face so thats not an option either
  19. Where did you get it from Dean? I followed the link on your post but it just gives a dealer list. I take it you got yours mail order?
  20. I've never replaced an anvil on any of our chippers. Just build em up with weld and grind it square
  21. The stihl chain is RDR Chain but good luck buying it in the UK. Its only available to the Fire Service according to my local dealer
  22. Yep thats them. Thanks penfold
  23. I got mine from the uk but the first one i had came from italy.I think its lansdown engineering or similar are the importers. Been trying to dig the invoice out. The original chains shouldnt shatter as they are mild steel not hardened. Mine have bent into ovals Thats after 2 summers of approx 15 hours a week strimming on 'social housing' sites. Bottles, metal, bricks, pallets - nothing seems to stop it!!! As far as leg protection - i haev some kevlar shin pads used by riot police. They come above the knee. A bit like cricket pads but not weigt in them at all
  24. I had a FS400 and was really happy with it till it got nicked and I replaced it with the Husky equivalent, as thats all I could get in a hurry. The Husky one seems a lot more tourqey and more powerful for the weight though. Its very robust, more so than the stihl. Whichever you choose, I'd reccommend a Brogio head for it. Its a chain flail head and its load better than line or knives Just my opinion!
  25. Just about to take my C+E (The old HGV 1) and what i understand is that if you pass in a weight category you get entitilement to lower cats but not higher. Ie if you pass C1+E you get B+E but not C+E. Its explained better than I can here: How to add higher categories to your driving licence (staging and upgrading) : Directgov - Motoring Which is why I went in at the top and did HGV. Its no more than C1 and you cut out the middle man
