  1. It has amazed me how little coverage this is getting in both the national media as well as trade journals. Sadly it is a really big deal. It has also reportedly started affecting Douglas Fir now, lets just hope its not as successful with this as it has been with Larch. I'll wait with my hands over my eyes for what happens next!
  2. Awesome... well done Stef!

    PPE Classes

It really depends on the chain speed of the machine you are using. I.e, if your max chain speed is 19m/s the class 1 is adequate. If your chain speed is 28m/s the you would need class 3 (or whatever is the highest available).
  4. Up until Dec last year, I was Jon's tutor at College and can give him my full recommendation. He's a sensible lad who is always willing to work hard and would be an asset to any company. Give him a shot, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
  5. Another job for big JVW? Nice camera zipline there Steve!

    small van

I'm selling this one... Vauxhall Combo 1.3CDTi - 55reg -ex-Royal Mail - 58k FSH on eBay (end time 22-May-10 21:41:02 BST) It's always been great for me. I'm also bringing it up to the Borders in a week or two!
  7. I did my Tech Cert management excercise there back in 2006 and the description previously mentioned does not tally with the site that we were given. If you focus too much on it, I think you'll be caught out on the day. To be honest I'm not sure about the legitimacy of asking for specific site info before the exams... It's a test of genuine knowledge and ability. With that in mind, my advice would be to be familiar with a range of woodland types and focus of speedy and professional survey / report preparation. I found that doing mock exam exercises on woods that I didn't know extremely useful. All the best for the exams.
  8. It really varies mill to mill and even down to the current highest value products being produced by the mill at any one time... The best place to look, other than speaking direct to mills would be back cataloges the RFS Quarterly Journal.
  9. Steve Woollard is pretty old - must be knocking on towards 55 I'd say!
  10. Good looking website Steve. All the best to you!
  11. As Will's former college tutor, I'd happily give him a glowing reference and will be passing his details on to a few personal contacts in the area. Will, can you PM me with your new contact info please mate. All the best for your move out East!
  12. I'd go for Ganoderma resinaceum AIE - Tree Fungi - Ganoderma resinaceum
  13. Hi mate, Can't give you an exact reference point but my first point of call would be either the Biddle books or Tree Roots in the Built Environment - mine are tucked away in the loft so can't look for you. I wouldn't be suprised if you don't find anything specific to help you as the answer would likely be as varied as the possible soil type. I'd speculate that the actual effect on the root processes would be negligible. - there you are... about as useful as a chocolate teapot! Interesting question though!
  14. Tallest broadleaves are in the grounds of a big school near Blandford, at the end of the vid we climb and measure England's tallest Wellingtonia...
  15. Boom!! Looks like the Foden hit in Saturday's rugby!
  16. Good man... keep 'em coming!
  17. LANTRA & NPTC headquaters are at Stonleigh in Warwickshire... Where the showground is.
  18. In that case I'd say you've got a point! Good luck speaking to ABC Awards.
  19. Do you mind me asking which exams you sat? For a few of the professional qualifications out there I'd expect the candidate to have knowledge above and beyond the "suggested reading material" list. In this instance I think (without making reference) that step cuts are described in the draft BS3998 which was released for consultation a year or so back... I'd say that for the Tech Cert or Prof Dip you should know and be able to cite the contents of even the draft. Sorry if thats not the answer your looking for... I guess it all depends on A) the qualification B) how prescriptive the reading list is
  20. I'm worried about you mate...!
  21. Thanks guys, has anybody used them much? Do they work well? If not, I guess I'll find out when mine arrive! Interested in what people think as much as anything else...
  22. Ah yes... the KitKat... be without one at your peril!
  23. What would you not be without for chainsaw maintenance? What little gadgets are a must have for your toolkits? I'm trying to build up a comprehensive range of maintenance tools and would like to see what people use most... For the last 14 yrs I have rated one of my Mum's old butter knifes for scraping out sideplates and cleaning bar surfaces! Genuine Sheffield Steel! Cheers.
  24. Anybody used these neat little tools - they take the depth guage down at the same time as sharpening the cutter. Is there a UK supplier yet?
