  1. Could it be previous students mate? Lord knows you upset enough of them!
  2. The Savernake Forest is a special place, one of the most important ancient tree sites in the country / europe - plus its the place that sparked my interest in trees having been taken there camping every summer in my youth. I'll be lucky enough to be part-based there soon and am looking forward to getting to know every inch of the place! I'm due to take some of my student groups up to the Savernake in the next few weeks, I've been plenty of times before but would appreciate other peoples thoughts on the site - any particular highlights - hidden gems etc. Below are just a few pics of one of the monster Beech that live there... its massive!!!
  3. Army goretex all the way for me in really heavy rain, STIHL stuff is ok in a shower but not good enough for working all day in a downpour. One of the best jackets I've ever had was an orange Timberland waterproof, it was only £30, brightly coloured, light enough to wear all the time but very waterproof as well - doubt you can get them anymore though.
  4. Hi David, Ref: the Elm (Ulmus glabra I think?!) in my avatar... Ht: approx 17m Circumference @ 1.5m: 4.9m Diameter @ 1.5m: 1560mm I've got some really nice pics but can't yet figure out how to get them off a back-up disc! I'd be happy to give you the location details for your own use if you PM me - don't think its too far from you.
  5. Hmm... everything else fits the bill - host species, located on an old pruning wound, upper surface appearance, single stalk, appearance at this time of year... It looks just like 2 examples I've got in my P&D box in the office. But if you're sure thay are gills then I guess that rules out Polyporus... Interesting one!
  6. Looks like Meripilus giganteus to me too. Was Armillaria a joke?!
  7. Polyporus squamosus - The Dryads Saddle. Would dispute the 'gills' reference, looks like its just a degraded fruit body
  8. I used this one about 10 years ago to fell a sycamore... (can't remember why, I think we must have been having a play about). It seemed to work well enough but haven't used it since... can't have been that good!
  9. I've decided to get a porch built and have asked 3 local builders to give quotes - one was recommended. All 3 turned up eventually and duely measured up promising to have written quotations round within the week. Exactly what I expected - pretty much what you'd get in the tree industry. Anyway, 4 weeks later and still no quotations! I guess there must be loads of work out there for these boys? To top it off, one guy spoke to a neighbour who is having the same thing done (joint job) and said that he could only work half days because it would be hard work although he would charge for full days as he'd be too tired to go and work elsewhere in the afternoon! Man alive!! What planet are these guys on? Anyway, cutting to the chase... anyone know a good builder in Wiltshire?
  10. Cheers Andy. You're not the Andy Clarke from Urb.... no wait, we've been there haven't we?!
  11. Show off!
  12. Indeed... but hellish difficut to get hold of sometimes - always out measuring trees!
  13. Great thread! Check out my avatar... believed to be one of the largest Elms in the country but TBC - you can just make me out in the canopy. Considering all of the tree measuring I've done in the last year, the fact that I haven't yet accurately recorded data from this one makes me hang my head... it's in my parents garden! Huge at the base. A proper old burr elm. Has anyone had experience of collecting / propergating seed from elm? I've been meaning to give it a go for probably 20 yrs!
  14. Nice... looks like something out of Mad Max!
  15. Indeed, it takes an age to season but once it's bone dry it burns very well when mixed in with something a bit lighter. Dead Elm was always a bit of a favorite of mine when back in East Anglia
  16. Seeing the pictures on your blackberry didn't do it justice... looks like quite an experience for the boys! Glad nobody was injured, bet you're pleased Rich will be doing the near miss forms!
  17. Are you going to put up pics of your 'windy' day?
  18. ...if you do say so yourself!
  19. WINNER!! Don't climb every day like I used to but... about 105kg, 6'2" when I stand upright! And if you don't mind... I'm a little sensitve about it!
  20. Always, got one taped to the loose end of my chin strap. Have had to use it a few times and wouldn't be without it now, that and some trauma dressings / first aid kit carefully secreted about my person!
  21. Thought this might be of interest to some of our younger members... Forestry Commission - Apprenticeship Scheme ... and the supervisors role: Forestry Commission - Forestry Apprentice Supervisor
  22. I dare say you'll find out in due course!
  23. This all sounds ok if you are talking about a temporary building which is to be used as a 'showpiece - how it could be done' type of deal but is it really sustainable? I don't think so. What was the underground protection like? Was as much thought put into that as above ground? That said, I would liked to have seen it... I wonder will be going on there in 5 years!
  24. Rob Blake down in Bridgewater. LOLER - Blake Training
