  1. Very well moderated!
  2. Am I missing something here? All I see is Oak! Classic old Laetiporus FB & decay though... .
  3. Hey?!
  4. Where are you? Could give you a few pointers down South...
  5. The 10mm has driven me mad!! Like Drew, I just can't get it to grip consistantly... Must admit that I got fed up of trying fairly quickly as my climbing time is limited so it may need to bed in a bit more. I switched onto some Armor-Prus and straight away it was much more supple and grippy. Much better!
  6. Hi, I've been building up to this one myself... Keeley at Treelife told me that they will try and run a course in Chippenham or around. I'm nearer to Salisbury so the further south the better for me. My participation in the course is dependant on work funding the program and giving me the time to attend... they talk a good game when it comes to staff development but the reality can be somewhat different! Provisionally though... I'm keen! I work at a college so could possibly provide a venue as well!
  7. I got dragged along to one of these a few years ago... all a bit freaky really so never went back. My mate stuck with it and actually got some decent trade from it. Not my bag at all though!
  8. Hey Drew, It's a really good thing for your company to be doing, such an easy way to make tree work much safer. Your access lines policy looks pretty comprehensive, the only thing I might suggest is some information about responsibility for the access line... Who brings it to site, inspects before use and is responsible for ensuring its installation and subsequent storage. Also, will friction hitches be pre-installed? Hope its of some use? Cheers, Mark

    mini trees

But what about the Leylandii hedge?! Acers look great, I think I know what I'm asking for next birthday!
  10. A mate just sent me this video... some of the most skillful riding I've ever seen. Awesome!
  11. Whilst working at a private arboretum today I witnessed clouds (thousands) of C. ohridella adult moths emerging and taking flight in and around mature Horse Chestnut trees. The trees in question were still surrounded by last years foliage so no wonder really but I've never seen so many... I hope this isn't an ominous sign of things to come?
  12. Amongst other extraction methods, I've used both small 2wd and larger dumpers in the past... both are ok but hand-balling material on can be a ball-ache. Is the wood in pole length or shortwood? I would approach these guys for a demo, I spoke to them at Cirencester last year and they seemed pretty keen to travel about and show their machine off. 13. We hope to be demo-ing something very similar in the next few weeks... Safety Technology Ltd | Wind Energy | $martline® Hanging from such a 5.5mm cord could prove 'interesting' first time round!
  14. The information I have is that individual tree unit value is £26 and woodland is £104 - up 4% from last year.
  15. There are a number of different flail types available; # Standard 'farm' flails which can be used to tackle both hedges and ditches / verges. # Hedge only flails which have a sharper flail and are only designed to be used off the floor. Of these you can have rear mounted and forward mounted (giraffe) flails - great as long as the material is't too chunky. # There are a few guys left with circular saw attachments as well, they have to be seen to be believed... think James Bond helicopter attachments. I've been fortunate (?) enough to have operated each type of machine and can tell you that access is the biggest limiting factor. The standard flails do make a mess but as you correctly say, plants do respond well to this type of fracture cut so I see it as a temporary, asthetic problem really.
  16. Thats a great looking tool... I hope its built as well as it appears to have been designed. Hopefully get my hands on one soon!
  17. Excellent... glad we got there in the end! Nice to see it again. Cheers David
  18. Nasty... I could mention that as the driver, it's your responsibility to check the trailer before setting off, but that would just make me an unkind smart arse!
  19. Reading all this makes me realise how very lucky I was when I fell from 25' about 5 years ago. I landed feet first then crashed onto my arse. At the time I was winded but back working in 10mins. It was only a few years later when having back and neck pain investigated that I found the fall had actually left me with a tilted pelvis. Still... it could have been much worse.
  20. I know a guy who I think has just bought one... he's based just South of Edinburgh. It sounds like he could have just what you're looking for. PM me and I'll try and get his details. Mark
  21. The last time it was measured it came out at 60m.
  22. About an hour of climbing... Chris was a legend. You can just make out Lukasz going up the neighbouring tree at roughly the same speed but he was hauling all of his camera gear! Nice soundtrack huh? I really hate that song!
  23. We had a half-scot... does that count?
  24. I wouldn't put my house on it! It is the tallest known tree and as I'm sure you know, trees of this size tend to stand out. There are whole stands of trees in Wales reaching the 60m mark so there could well be taller trees out there... the hunt continues!
  25. Hi all, Some of you may have seen previous threads when myself and 4 colleagues with the backing of STIHL and Safety Technology travelled up to Scotland in the hunt for the UK's tallest tree - The Tall Trees Project - Part 1. I didn't realise but a neighbouring landowner actually filmed the ascent (or most of it!). Hope you enjoy it. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uzDY5fbMUk[/ame] Towards the end of the month we'll be embarking on part 2 of the project - climbing Englands tallest tree with the Sparsholt College National Diploma in Arboriculture Year 2 students, so we'll keep you posted! All the best
