I've seen trebles footed from a telehandler bucket, but it was perfectly safe as they were farmers.

Is it worth the risk? There are plenty of trees out there without TPO's that need felling. You can even get paid for some of them.

Good post Jonny. Half the trick is to screw the operating costs down. All maintenance work is redefined as leisure time when you have kids, as are log deliveries and carting stuff about at weekends.

Also Ben (great poll btw), either the lucrative SE isn't that different, or I need to jack my prices up! For the record I ticked the 'view only option'. I liked the way you levelled the playing field by setting a few criteria that most can relate to. I'm finding more and more that my best days financially are multiple small jobs, rather than big glory camera-tastic gruellers. I try and get a sense of each job from the initial phone call, where I always stipulate that the truck and chipper won't be appearing for less than £130, even for a tiddler. That sharp gets rid of loads of low ballers and 20 quote messers. 4/5/6 of them in a day and the cash, sorry, bank transfers, is/are where I want it to be.

That is a very valid point Huck. 170 days at £500 and that's your lot. Leaves 194 days to blow it on hos and charlie, and spend Christmas Day with the family. The dirty c-word that Mick mentioned is obviously alive and well....

That's definitely true on some jobs Huck, but money is money. Setting a line to crown raise half a dozen trees to 15' probably wouldn't impress most customers either. As I said earlier it's totally job dependent. If I need them and can finish quicker they'll get loaded.

It's pretty well sorted in our village. If you have a pumpkin outside your door the kids knock, if you haven't they don't. I'll be at home smashing down a few cans while the wife is doing the rounds with the kids.

Wise Mick. I don't really belong there anyway as I can't take down any tree (up to 200') in a morning. I have ventured my opinion occasionally, but fielding death threats from gypsies and Americans was distracting me from enjoying my wine.

Don't take this the wrong way Vesp, but you've just mentioned several scenarios that get ladder use such a bad reputation.

I'll use them for all the things Steve mentioned. They are definitely a useful tool for me. Not to be confused with the Darwinist scenarios that Matty mentions, some of which are both horrifying and predictable.

How long before moving to SRT

Ladders, SRT, DDRT, RWZZ, ACDC, ICBM. Whatever gets me to the boozer quickest is getting used! Bang an SRT line into a takedown, hang your ropebag off the line for a bit of weight and you can literally run up the stem on spikes just holding the stem with your hands as your hitch advances, no flipline required. Works best with fit girls watching.
